Just to keep this post from sinking on the 2nd page This afternoon i'll take the lid off the walkabout and do a preliminar check on the thing, I'll take some pics and post here while i'm at it, keep tuned! I'll see if i can get a way to record something on my computer before and after the mod. Cheers

Thank you, that's great, even though it is of poor quality i can still see the diagram (i can't read the hand written text on the bottom, is this of any usefull information?). Anyway, i've sent a mail to Mesa asking the diagram and i'll post that one here too. Luckily this seams an easy mod for someone with my limited knowlege of electronics. Just one question pops into my mind, why removing the 10uF cap and replace for an equal one? Wouldn't it be easier to just remove the top pin of C26 from the PCB (i'm assuming that the top pin is positive, if not both pins should be removed and cap inverted) and simply solder a wire from it to the C21? Just add a bit of heat shrink to avoid any short circuit and presto! I'll look in to it tomorrw, now it's too late to pull out the solder. Cheers

WoT, when you have the time could you send me the schematic for the mod (or link it in this thread)? I could put some pics of my progresses here to help someone in the future with the same question.
GB Shuttle 9 low on power? no way, it's got bucket loads.
I only stated that its nowere near 900W, that can be proven by analizing the power amp section, its the same as the one on the Aguilar Tonehemmer 500 (that is stated as only having 500W! what's the deal here?). Shuttles do pump a big amount of sound for their size and weight (probably the best ratio when comparing with other manufacturers) but they need to be driven at 4 Ohms with multiple speaker cabs, IME. Cheers

GK and Shuttle should have a cleaner tone, Streamliner a valve sound and LM800 just muddys the sound too much (at least the one i heard did...). Mind that i have the shuttle 9 and can assure you that it goes nowere near the stated 900W, it's more like 500W... I briefly had a Reidmar and even though i never used any of my amps at full wack i could swear that the Reidmar was louder than the GB, just not as good tone for my likings. I have a Walkabout for 2 days so i won't make any judgement on it but it's also very loud, not sure if enough for you. There are more options out there but i'll let them be presented to you by people owning those amps. cheers
Mesa seem, IMO, a bit stubborn, but they can get away with it because they make amps with great tone. What the world needs is a slightly more powerful Walkabout, with the same pre, a similar power but higher (eg 500-600W), with speakons and a switchable pre/post EQ with a separate DI level. It'd be £1500+, but it would sell.
Yep, you've got it all covered, just missed the mute button . It's almost impossible to understand why in these days a manufacturer would build an amp with these "flaws". I love its tone, i can get a tone very faithfull to my bass sound but richer in harmonics and low end than my shuttle but as a working tool the shuttle has everything you'll ever need. I'm a bit torn betwen both amps, i'll give both some time on stage and then decide wich takes the spot.

Best way to go straight into PA?
Ghost_Bass replied to Herbie The Rad Dorklift's topic in Amps and Cabs
You should get anything that'll leave you happy with your sound But if your idea is to get your sound from the stage monitors (going out of the desk) and don't have any particular sound in mind that your mixer is unable to produce (presonus is a good mixer) then i think a simple DI would do the job. Of course this is Bass Chat and as a member you can never have too much gear so if you have the chance to get a DI with more knobs and bulbs for a good price it wont hurt to have it... -
Those pics are great, they really do their job of not showing anything about the bass and its damage (i'm sorry, it's vintage worn filled with mojo...). Even if i had won the lottery i would never buy a bass on that condition, not even if it was a cheap bass...

Best way to go straight into PA?
Ghost_Bass replied to Herbie The Rad Dorklift's topic in Amps and Cabs
But do you need the EQ on those DIs? I only see a point for that if you use some kind of driven or "valvey" sound of if your mixer doesn't have a good pre-amp. The tone sculping can (and will) be done on the desk. This is, of course, for the "going straight to the desk" option. -
Best way to go straight into PA?

The Behringer ULTRA-DI (DI100) is a very good and cheap one, no need to waste too much money in a backup solution. -
Yes, it's a valid point, but we're a pub band and don't always travel with a sound guy but always use PA support so i don't want to get caught having to change my volume mid gig without having somebody out there listening to the changes on the PA and correcting them on the mixer. If you could send me those schematics that would be great, here's my e-mail: marcorreia.bass [at] hotmail.com Cheers
-
Yeah, i'll probably send them an e-mail but it's always best to hear it from others who have done this to know beforehand of any problems/dificulties that this procedure might bring. The pre EQ isn't as essential as it might seam because i always use a fairly flat EQ on my amps but the pre Master is a must have because many times i have the need to adjust my master mid gig. Cheers

Hi, i've bought me one of these this weekend. Really nice tone, i'm not into valve goodiness but i little bit always sounds great. After a bit of fiddling and experimenting i came to the painfull realization the its DI is only post EQ and the worst part is that the master volume also affects it. I've been reading the manual and Mesa states this regarding the DI and Master:
If you must have true independence between these two controls - and cannot learn to work with the stock scheme, contact us directly and we can fax you a simple modification you can do that will remove the MASTER and its associated stage from the DIRECT signal path. However, this will result in degradation of the sweet tube character and while you will gain independence of the controls...you will trade a substantial measure of tone.
So here's a couple of questions: 1. Has anybody done this mod and can teach me how to do it? 2. Is there any way to make this DI work as pre EQ (i'm thinking about something like the jumper on markbass amps) without the obvious solution of adding a DI box? I have a limited knowledge of electronics but enought to poke around the amp without tearing it appart, if needed. Thank you

Reidmar just got more powerful...
MB1. "Yes, but this one goes to Eleven!"
Indeed it goes, amazing the output of such a small/light thing! -

If the one i had, with 250W, already could tear my house walls appart imagine this one: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330759355301 Yet another case of stating the peak power output... Needless to say that i already send a message to the seller informing them of the misleading consequences of this description.

Fender Jazz -to preamp or not to preamp?
Ghost_Bass replied to SlapbassSteve's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd agree. Artec preamps work, but they don't really offer anything extraordinary. In addition they have a big block of a preamp, unlikely you'lll fit that plus battery in a Jazz control cavity without modification. My personal favourite for a Jazz is the J-Retro. More expensive yes, but it really gives you a lot of control. The mid sweep in particular is very cool. You could even just buy the mid sweep module alone. It'll fit without alterations, but the knobs will not be the originals as it uses concentric dual pots and knobs.
I managed to instal a SE2-A on a VM '77 Jazz that i upgraded, it wasn't easy though, very tight fit and a headache to replace battery and fit it all back again. Tonewise i totally agree with you, the Artec isn't a bad preamp, it's very clean and useable but it offers very little improvement to the bass's sound, the bass and high controls on the amp do the same as that preamp, no character or timbre improvement. -
Thanks man! I probably won't do a build thread, I'd rather just do a grand reveal when I've got it in my hands! It's not a complete custom job, strictly speaking they're all "standard" options I've chosen, it's just that there are so many standard options that I wouldn't be able to find EXACTLY the spec I want anywhere. It's gonna be a long wait.......
Do you have a listing of all the options? Do they still offer the Delanos/Glockenklang electronics intead of the Sandberg Stock? Does anybody who tried both electronics care to make a quick review? I really fancy the option of coil tapping on the MM pickup that the older model had. Cheers
-
Thanks for the tip, i'll get in touch with him. Cheers
-
Thanks for the info, i've been looking through Sandberg's dealer list and no one seams to stock a bass in any way similar to what i'm looking for, guess i'll have to order a custom build from the factory if i can't find one by the end of the summer... Cheers

I have a vacuum at home that goes up to eleven!!!

Where are you guys ordering your Bergs? What's the cheapest place around to get one? I'm thinking about joining the club with a California PM5 (or VM5) with tinted maple neck, in tobacco burst and probably a black pickguard. If you know of anyone fitting the description please let me know cheers
