I hope i had a door stoper put in there to keep it from opening too much GW! Nice colection, congrats!

Hi, i got a MIM Classic 50's Precision in a trade, it came with two J pickups glued together functioning like a humbucker on the bridge position (one pickup was bigger than the other...). The wiring was even more messier, it had one volume and one tone pots, one 5 way switch to change between pickups (P / P+J1 / J1 / J1+J2 / J2) and another extra switch to turn on the P regardless of the 5-way switch position... on top of all that it also had an EMG PA2 booster fitted plus the battery! The routing job done to it was very, very bad... So, first thing i did was to order a Deluxe humbucker to replace the two J's and a new anodized gold scratchplate to replace the original that was drilled and cutted to fit all the switches. I've done my very best to perfect the routing for the pickup cavity and it turned up acceptable. Now i'm left with the wiring, i want to leave this bass passive so i don't have to buy a pre-amp and do more routing for the battery (taking off a P scratchplate everytime a battery dies isn't an option). I also want to keep costs down because this bass is meant to go on the market as soon as i'm finished and we all know that a MIM (even one of the good ones like mine) has little value. I would like to know your thoughts and ideas regarding my options, in my mind i have two: 1) Use a '62 J wiring with dual concentric pots thus keeping the original two holes on the scratchplate. For this i woul have to buy the pots, caps anda knobs; 2) Use a Vol/Vol/Tone (like a J) and move the jack socket to the side of the body. Doing this i would only have to buy a pot and a knob (keeping the originals) and the jack plate. So what do you say? Give me some ideas, please! Cheers Marco

Had a BBM, sold it, bought a Pickle Pie B, never looking back again!

Ok, i'll be watching this forum for the link. My wah is a 3Leaf GR, it's a Lovetone clone and no expression, just plain simple auto-wah.
Thanks bud, really means a lot that folks enjoy reading this stuff. Post your reply on the blog as a comment as well - it encourages others to post! :-) Hopefully soon my blog posts will also be shared with the new 'Blog' tab at the top of the forum as well. I think the next post is looking like it will be Modulation vs Bass Frequencies...
Done! I'm waiting to learn about those modulations, i don't get on with that kind of fx, for me an octaver+fuzz+wah alone or combined give me all the sounds i need. cheers

Hi, i drive a Focus estate, do you think that if i recline the back seat i could fit one of these blue picks inside?

Does anybody know if Roqsolid makes covers for pointy blue picks?
New blog post a few of you may enjoy: Shep on Bass: Signal Chain Basics, Part II
Great reading Shep! I also use my comp in the end (signal path on my sig) and find it's the best place for it to tame all the spikes generated by the fx. I use the EBS because it doesn't add (much, i suppose) volume to to signal when you play softer so that helps keeping my dynamics intact, i only need compression to soften the spikes. Keep posting more of this great stuf and share the links with us, congratulations

Well, we're turning this thread in a "what's your favourite" but what about tone? Do you think that there's any significant diference in sound? Will the carpet absorve some vibration of the cab or act as dumping material? Do BC cab builders take the cabs finish in consideration when designing them? We're always talking about how a bone nut adds more tho the bass sound or how a high-mass bridge adds sustain, people even talk about differences in tone between nitro or cellulose finish, so i guess it's safe to assume that the cab covering could have some part on it's sound. Cheers

Hi, this is something i've been thinking about for a few weeks, i have an old Trace Elliot Boxer 15 combo and it's carpet is all teared and full of cat hair (courtesy of my cute cat...). I've been thinking about recovering it with tolex so it can be easily cleaned. The combo has great sound and this situation got me thinking if the carpet covering does anything to the sound. Maybe dumping it or filtering some freqs..?!! This is just a question for us to discuss a bit, i'm still going ahead with the tolex on the combo because even if it would loose some sound qualities it's just my home prectice amp so i don't need a perfect sound from it. Comment away!

Help changing Fender Jazzmaster gain & volume pots please!
Ghost_Bass replied to Ghost_Bass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yes, you're right. i'll see in the weekend what we can do to lower the input. I'm hoping that it won't be necessary to mod the amp but putting a resistor on one of the inputs seems like a good idea and it won't mess much with the amp's circuits. Just one question, the resistor should be on the hot wire, right? Cheers Edit: On the other hand maybe it's a more sound move to place the resistor in the guitar rather in the amp! It's easier to solder on the guitars jack and there won't be a PCB getting in the way! Any suggestions on the kind/brand of resistor i should be looking at or any one i could pick from a electronics store would do the trick just fine. -
If you remove the jack the battery cuts off automatically but if you want to be more reassured then simply take off the battery when you don't use the bass, it's easy and you dont have to go soldering and drilling on the bass. To be sure that is your battery draining and not anything else causing the degradation get a multimeter and take readings of the batterys charge from time to time so you can see how fast it drains. Be sure to use good quality batteries, Duracell or similar. Cheap ones go faster!
What about a volume pedal between the guitar and amp?
We tried it, it cuts too much of the guitars character... i'll start by lowering the pickups to the point they still retain the timbre and see if that makes any significant change. -
Following my pick GAS i',ve just pulled the trigger on one of these babies. The holes are carefully engineered to offer less air resistance wilst strumming thus making me play faster! I'll make some footage once they arrive.
-
I forgot to mention, that pick will be bounded and will have real inlays! Nothing of thay sticker crap you see on e-bay!
-
I don't like plastic picks, the sound is too artificial. I use rosewood picks for a dark tone and maple ones for brighter tone. Here's a pic: I recently took delivery from a world-famous luthier of a two-sided pick, they're known to be able to reproduce double-thump technique even more accuratly than Wooten!

My TRB5PII also has some residual sound with the volume rolled off but i find it could be due to the piezzo. As for the battery mine also eats a lot of battery, i think it's using an average of 3 per year and i find it too much when comparing to other basses i had that would endure more than a year with the same battery. Just make sure that you disconnect the jack every time you're not playing and always carry a spare battery with you, if it fails during a gig it's a 30sec fix between songs. I can tell that my battery is dying because it adds a tiny feedback to the sound, just enough to tell that it's going but perfectly acceptable to finish a song without the audience noticing. These little problems don't bother me much and i can live with them (as long as batterys are cheap), the sound is too good for me to get too picky with the bass. If you really want to get rid of these problems then a can only advise you to replace the electronics of your bass but it wont sound the same afterwards... Cheers
You have to find out the schematic and read it. I already mentioned that one of possibilities is to decrease R23 resistor - from 68k to e.g. 22k and use input #2. Another option would be to decrease R16 resistor from 33k to 22k.
Thanks Mark, i'll try to see if i can identify that resistor and if it's possible to replace it myself. I'll post pics of my findings. I've already managed to get the schematic for the amp from here: http://support.fender.com/schematics/guitar_amplifiers/Jazzmaster_Ultralight_59000.pdf
Sound advice - sorry, couldnt resist that. If it was me, I'd go for less gain. Putting a resistor in series with the speaker will reduce the volume, but you'll still have the problem of control, or lack of it. Just less volume.
I'm just looking for some mod that'll lower the volume a bit so that the guitard can have a little more tweakability on the volume knob. We don't need a big reduction, the volume he currently has is suitable for gigs but it's a pain for him to set it just right. I'm just looking to make him more confortable with the amp. He's already thinking in not taking his cab to gigs and just DI form the amp and hear from the monitor... but we prefer to mic his cab to PA because the Les Paul is too bassy. I'm already starting to see a culprit for this problem... it has an important part in every problem/solution i can think of... maybe is time to convince him to get a Telecaster?!! Thank you all, i really apreciate all the info you're giving me. Cheers -

Trace Elliot AH-300-12, gain on 10 and still too low!
Ghost_Bass replied to big rob's topic in Amps and Cabs
You shouldn't have to do that! Read the manual like i've told you. Here's one: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=trace%20elliot%20ah-300%2012%20manual&source=web&cd=6&ved=0CE8QFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.trace-elliot.co.uk%2Fpdf_display.php%3Fsys%3DALL%26type%3DPDM_6_OM%26level%3DPDM_6%26tbl%3Dsystem%26def%3DA_1%26key%3D342&ei=igNNT9-5JYi90QWxsomeBQ&usg=AFQjCNFflqphWREnF2yVrq7aC6UqlyZIsA Don't be frightened by the links size, it's a pdf. Remeber, Trace amps sound much better if setup properly. Cheers -

Ghost_Bass replied to Ghost_Bass's topic in Repairs and Technical
He doesn't play too loud live, but he can't fine tune his volume wich is a bit frustrating, a tiny touch on the knob and boom! On rehearsalls we keep his amp far away from us. We're looking for the least expensive way to do something to solve this problem. Tell me, i would you lower the input stage gain? In regard to the resistor on the cab i think that he would probably get a 8Ohm cab instead and sell his. Cheers Marco
