Help changing Fender Jazzmaster gain & volume pots please!
Ghost_Bass replied to Ghost_Bass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi Mark, the fact is that we all love the tone of this amp plus its size and portability, it's great for our stuff (we're a funk/soul covers band and we perform in pubs). He's not a shredder, he has the jazz school but i agree with you that the Les paul is sending way too much signal into the amp. I'll try to lower some input from the guitar first before we think about messing with the amp. Probably i'll lend him one of my 8ohm cabs for gigs and if it solves the problem i'll talk him into changing his cab. Can you recommend me any mods to the guitar that'll lower its output without loosing much character appart from lowering the pickups? Maybe using lower impedance pots and changing the caps? Brancini, he's only using a crybaby, all his other fx are form the amp. This amp is realy loud, my shuttle 9.0 (suposed to be 900W) is having trouble to keep up with him in that moments in the middle of a rehearsall when we kick in the OD and play a couple of rock chords just for the laugh. thanks for all your help so far Cheers -

That would be a great idea but one problem... the amp doesn't have Fx loop! Here's the back pannel: I think i'll turn myself into the guitar, i'll lower his pickups a bit to see if it makes any difference, if not i gues we'll have to search for a new cab. He doesn't want to get rid of the amp because it sounds lovely. -

Thanks for your replys, Mark, you're right, it's a Jazzmaster, i got confused whilst writting. There's absolutely no problem with the amp, it always was this way. The main problem is that my guitarrist lays with a Les Paul and it has a very hot signal and this little amp thingy is 250W@2Ohm!!! He uses a single 1x12" cab and it's stupidly loud at low settings of volume, so much that if he tries to lower a bit more on the volume knob (on both channels, both are very hot) the sound cuts out, I know that he can lower the volume on his guitar or even lower the pickups a little bit but then his guitar looses character... I just thought that having a log pot would smoother the volume control but i guess i was wrong, thank you for alerting me. It seems that the only way to solve this is to either get another guitar with less output or a 8ohm cab (his cab is 2ohm...). Before anybody asks, it really is too loud, he overwhelms the drums as our drummer plays very low and we want to keep it this way. Cheers -
Sold a 3Leaf Proton to Trev, great guy to talk to and very patient when the courier got a little delayed. Would do business with him again without a thought. Really recommend! Cheers Marco

Hi, my guitarist has a Fender [s]Jazzman[/s] Jazzmaster Ultralight amp. It sounds lovely but it has too much volume on tap, so much that even with the minimal turn on the volume and gain controls just to get that first sound it's already too loud on stage. I have read something about fender using non-log pots that give lots of volume so i opened the amp and made a few mesurements. This is the amp in question: After opening it up i found the folowing writtings on the pots: upper channel (1): volume: 30C100K 0618 Q lower channel (2): gain: 30C100K 0618 Q volume: B100K 0642 Q From my understanding of pots i could already see that the volume pot on channel 2 is linear so this is one of the culprits for the too much volume on short turn but the C letter on the others left me intrigued so i mesured them with my multimeter. Next are the readings i obtained from all pots for 0%, 50% and 100% of turning the knobs: Ch1: vol: 0% - 96K / 50% - 33K / 100% - 0K Ch2: gain: 0% - 96K / 50% - 32K / 100% - 0K vol: 0% - 92K / 50% - 48K / 100% - 0K From this readings i see that the "C" pots work in the opposite way as the Log pots so i've serched a little more on the web and found this chart: From this i think i'm right to assume that the "C" pots are antilog pots (never heard of such thing, please correct me if i'm saying something stupid). Back to the main problem, i want to change these three pots for Log pots so my guitarist can have a better control on his volume but another problem appeared, it seems that these aren't regular pots, they're called something like "fender snap in pots". Here's a pic: From the numbers on the original pots i guess i should be looking for something like some "A100K snap in pots" but i can't seem to find any on the web. The closest i've found was on banzai music and they only have the 250K or the 25K log pots: http://www.banzaimus...t-250k-log.html http://www.banzaimus...ot-25k-log.html so here are my questions for whoever may help me: - Will my idea of changing the pots for log ones is going to have the desired effect? - Should i be changing all the three pots? - Do you know where i can find the "A100K snap in" pots? - If i can't find any can i use any of the ones on banzai? Wich value? (here's another problem, i dont know if they're solid shaft, the ones i have here have one side filed like the one in the pic i've posted early) I'm very sorry for the long post and bad english but i wanted to give the most information possible. I would really apreciate some insight on this subject. Best regards Marco

Going a bit away from the reidmar, anybody tried the classic 112 against a neo 112? Wich one sounds more transparent? I'm affraid that the classic will have a more "vintage" sound with a mid scoop. I love the sound of my Neo 110 and am looking to buy a 112 cab to pair up with my future reidmar (the cabs need to come first). Cheers

I don't think you need a ramp to play lighter... just practise right-hand technique! The only use i see for a ramp is the ability to suport your thumb everywhere from the neck to the bridge pickups! "Can of worms opened? Holly cr*p!!! I'll get my coat..."
That would be a nice combo........ I guess you're fairly unlikely to see one exactly like that come up on the used market, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it!
It would be a good thing because i still lack the Jedi ability to control the GAS...

I'm secretly in love with the idea of a California PM-5 in tobacco burst with maple board and black pickguard. Good thing that i haven't seen one yet!!! I would still keep my TRB in my possession though! Cheers
Don't worry about where an amp like this is made, as long as it has been inspected and checked properly. For the price, its good value. FYI - the Genz amps are made in their factory in Taiwan and inspected in the USA. I've never heard many issues with the Streamliner/Shuttle amps which is a good sign.
Sure, i see your point but when i had my Promethean the main thing that made me pass it on was to take off the lid of both the Promethean and the Shuttle and take a look inside. The GB was very well put together and the components looked good as the Promethean just looked cheap with lots of bended componentes and plastic knobs and the nut on the input jack hadn't been properlly screwed! I want to believe that i'll find the same QC on the reidmar that i've fund on the shuttle but i need to see to believe! Cheers

I've tried one last weekend and came out of the store with the Neo 110 i've tried it with and am now putting both my Rumble cabs for sale to go and get the Reidmar and probably a Neo 112... It really sounds good and loud. Those 250W are not "digital watts", it held its ground AB'd with my shuttle 9.0. I still don't know wich head i'll end up with because i really like the clarity of the GB and i always am a bit sceptical about chinese made stuff (reidmar says made in china...) but i'll need to use both heads live to see wich suits me best.

Trace Elliot AH-300-12, gain on 10 and still too low!
Ghost_Bass replied to big rob's topic in Amps and Cabs
your amp is fine, you should read the manual. usually trace amps work best with their gains set really high, on mine i had the gain set to 8.5. What you should do is to play your bass as hard as you'll ever be playing and set the gain to the "ok" position and then set the volume. don't worry if the ok doesn't light up during playing, it should only light up in that ocasions when you really push your bass. Cheers -
Yep, with my 3Leaf Groove Regulator. I had a Boss AW-3, EHX Microsynth, Proton and MXR M82 after just to discover that i got it right at first. Good thing is that i never sold my GR so everything else ended up being sold (except for the MXR that i'm currently selling - i just had to take the oportunity). The OD/Distortion/Fuzz was a different situation, i started with the ODB-3, got a MB distorsore, a behringer VT-911, another ODB-3, a EHX BBM, a Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet, a clone of the same Fulltone, and now i'm happilly giging a Wren&Cuff Pickle Pie B and this was one of the first two pedals i had GAS for before starting to buy the others (just out of curiosity the other was the Earthbound Supercollider)!!! The rest of my pedals (tuner - pitchblack; comp - multicomp; octave - MXR M88) i got it right the first time also and never had a strong will to change any. Summing up it seems that in a way i got it right the first time but trying different gear is so fun!!!

I have 5 pedals, tuner, octave, fuzz, wah and compressor. Only the middle 3 are fx but they get used constantly. If any stopped working i would have to rethink my bass line on the fly because it was written to be used with the fx - imagine playing Sledgehammer without an octaver... it wouldn't be the same thing... The less used is the fuzz (2 or 3 songs) but the rest are used a lot. So my answers would be: 1) 100% 2) no, not without writting new lines I'm in a funk/soul covers project.

Just got my Genz Benz Shuttlemax 9.2 delivered from the US of A
Ghost_Bass replied to far0n's topic in Amps and Cabs
Good question, i haven't got a clue. The safer move is to read the manual and send a mail to Jeff before firing the amp up! Edit: on a second read i see this: "SELF-CONFIGURING UNIVERSAL POWER SUPPLY" - i guess it means that there's no need to change a jumper. I think it was Markbass that have the same system... but i could be wrong. -
I don't think the old Shuttle 3.0 has the power switching - I bought a 6.0 from the States when they first came out (rather than the 3.0 which was all I really needed) because of this.
You're right it doesn't have it: But from the information on the pannel it seem like it doesn't need it, it takes 110 to 240V. Cheers -
ZZ Top Concert Series Precision copy MIJ 1980's
Ghost_Bass replied to Donnyboy's topic in Bass Guitars
Pretty clean for a mid 80's bass, the headstock almost shines! I also notice that the neck's heel stands out a fair bit from the neck pocket (see back pic). I would bet on a fake but for £100 it deserves a try. -
That is lovely! Do you have any difilculty fretting a note? I'm guessing that will require some adaptation from the left hand!

Not real until we see some pics!

I had a VM 77 JB that was all pimped up! It sounded and played beautifully. The mods: - badass II bridge - hipshot d-tuner - SD Basslines - Artec SA-2 preamp - MXR-type knobs - Fender backplate - schaller straplocks - fender headstock logo (when it got to my hands the original logo had been wiped out and replaced for some kind of vinil sticker... very poor job...) Some pics: https://picasaweb.go...962889369308994 Every mod was worth it, it was a very light bass and the neck was very comfortable and fast, woult it have been a five-string and i would still have it!
Sorry but £45 for a device (Auralex) that improves your sound quality live is hardly a fortune. Bet the the average cost of everyone's rig (bass(es), amp, cabs, pedals) is many times that amount. As for making one, I'm betting most of us are too inept or can't be @rsed
Sorry but £45 is still some money when you could get it done yourself for less than £5... most (if not all) the material you can get for free! I would rather use the remaining £40 to buy a used tuner or a compressor on the sales forum and that would definetly improve my sound...
Fatback, posed a question, many people offered opinions based on experience and offered variations on a solution to the issue including Bill who designs cabs for a living. I am sure Fatback is now armed with sufficient information to make his own decision, just as it was my decision to buy the Gramma, each to their own, thats why this is a vibrant and sometimes robust forum with input from all types of players.
You're right, this was just a bit of off-topic that i've wanted to release for some time now. It was not intended to you!

http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_xenyx_302_usb.htm I have one and it works very well. It does everything you want plus you can hook it up to your computer for recording! Very cheap too!
