Different companies adopt different buiness models. Mesa and Musicman have UK distributors as the middleman between factory and dealer. This makes it easier for the manufacturer as they are only dealing with a single point of contact in each country for ordering. The prospect of a manufacturer having to deal with a myriad of local resellers is a total nightmare which is why they work this way. Fender however have a wholly owned subsiduary, Fender UK, who do much the same but are part of the corporate umbrella and as such have to follow corporate policy with regard to pricing, etc. Quilter currently seem quite happy to deal directly with a sole UK Reseller however if their business grows dramatically and they increase their market presence then they will no doubt go down the Distributor route with a consequential increase in prices to pay for it. Mesa Boogie, for their own business reasons, appointed Westside Distribution as their Distributors. They handle a number of different manufacturers product lines and have offices and warehouse facilities and deal with sales forecasting, ordering, import processing, warehousing and onward shipment of all the products they handle. They pay for UK advertising, exhibition attendance and general marketing. In addition they are response for post-sales warranty so if your Prodigy dies it will have to back to them for it to be fixed at their cost, assuming that it is still within the warranty period. All of this is paid for from the mark-up on the products they are selling as well as salaries, national insurance, business rates, insurance, and all the other overheads that go with running a business. How they apportion mark-ups to their respective products is down to them. One could try and protest by not buying anything in which case they would say there is no market for this product and stop importing it. If you want to continue this discussion tomorrow I'd be more than happy to carry on.
I fully understand the distribution model and how it used to work in a non-connected world.. Indeed in my working life I've run a UK distribution company for a US tech firm and in another role appointed european distributors. The only real benefits a distie can offer these days are 1. Local market knowledge (ie what retail outlets to approach) 2. Trade credit accounts. In ye olden days they would also hold stock, spares and have an engineering/warranty/repair function. Westside don't seem to hold stock and farm out repairs from what I've seen.. Happy to carry on tomorrow...
-
Read post #66
I did.. I was asking what the distributors actually do for their cut these days? As in what value they add to the supply chain, not that it costs them money to run their operations...
-
Sorry, which instance?
Mesa D800 retail in US - $699. Retail in UK £845 Quilter Block 800 - $599 US retail . Retail in UK £620.. What value is the Mesa distributor adding?
-
Like all things in life, if you don't like Mesa's price then don't buy it.
I do have a mesa :-) but this does not excuse sticking with a distribution and pricing model that stuffs the UK marketplace..
-
Not a fair comparison as there is no Distributor just one Dealer who probably buys directly from the factory.
So what value are the distributor adding for their 20% in this instance?
-
I suspect that your last point is closer to the truth however you are not comparing like with like. You have to also consider sales volume. Fender sell far more guitars than Mesa sell bass amps. Guitars are easier to support as in general they don't go wrong so mark-ups can be lower as the inbuilt support costs are lower.. If an amp fails then the cost of fixing it is considerably higher. BTW I have no connection with any importer, distributor or dealer, I just speak from experience having worked for 40 years in the high-end electronics industry. It's the way it is and no amount of winging will change it. If you want to pay US prices for something then go there and buy it. Bring back Freddie Laker and Skytrain.
Quilter amp pricing in the UK and Europe appears to follow the £=$ model ... So if they can do it...
Fair enough, but my experience from buying US products has always been close to paying the same in GBP as you would in USD. A US Fender Precision is about $1350 from Sweetwater & about £1350 from Guitar Guitar. A Mesa Subway D800 is $699 from Sweetwater & £849 from Bass Direct. Personally, I think someone is making more than their fair share on the Mesa gear coming into the UK.
This... Anything more than a 25-30% uplift for VAT/Duty and handling (at the moment that pretty much equates to £=$) is taking the p*** .. The US also has distributors and retailers...
-
They are very expensive but, in my opinion very well built and sound great. Not sure if Mesa would be considered value for money however. The distributor prices have increased by 20% in the last couple of months too, probably blaming the weak pound but I'm also perplexed why the US prices are so much cheaper than UK, even given exchange rates. I could almost have got a cheap flight to the US and "smuggled" my Subway amp back for the extra it cost me.
YUp - hard to see how $699 plus sales tax in the US = £830 ish street price for the D800 in the UK.... Should be £100 cheaper at least.. And of course the D800 has a 100-240V power supply..
-
I basically swapped out all the hardware on a CS... so I bought the wood basically.. and I'd have done better getting someone like Sims to scan my required dims on some nice wood..and fitted decent after parts from Hipshot and the like. It would have been a much better bass, I'd wager, but the problem would have been trying to get £1k for it when selling...
+1 In red. I have a custom Jazz 5 which is worth less than the bridge/tuners/preamp and pickups unless someone takes a shine to it. I did not take the original hit (apart from some shielding work and new preamp) but I suspect it's mine forever..

Did he run out of one type of wood midway through building it? -
Not all that many amps can go down to 2 ohms, so that will be your limiting factor probably. I have a Little Mark 2 as my back up. I can get a great sound from that, although i don't use overdrive. Super lightweight and they go for really cheap second hand at the minute
The above +1 - cheap/lightweight/2 Ohm capable don't seem to go together... maybe the bass block 800? but depends on your definition of cheap..
-
I bought the pa myself all monitors, mics, leads, desk and stands along with a van (big pa) and take a bigger cut when the money is there. It's easier than having to divide it up if the band splits or paying a member off if they choose to leave. I'm kind of the band leader as well so it's a responsibility I feel I need to carry.
This is the ideal situation for me apart from having a dedicated PA person.
They can have higher sensitivity in the lows, but that's not always the case. Or larger. Some do, some don't. Or not. You can no more make a blanket statement about ported versus sealed than you can as to which is faster, a 4 cylinder versus 8 cylinder engine vehicle. My 4 cylinder twin-turbo BMW is a lot faster than my next door neighbor's 8 cylinder two-ton Toyota pickup truck.
And lo BFM leaps into the fray... :-) perhaps I should have said "in general" or "there is a slight tendency" :-)
-
I'm sure someone who is an acoustic engineer will be along in a moment, but as far as I understand ported cabs are more efficient (and can be smaller), sealed cabs have a flatter frequency response and therefore can be more accurate.. Just stumbled across this.. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/ported-vs-sealed-your-thoughts.664747/
