The Barefaced equivalent of a 4x10 + 1x15 config
markstuk replied to pmaraziti's topic in Repairs and Technical
Alex, When I get bored of lugging my Warwick Terminator cab around I now know who I'm coming to talk to :-) Cheers Mark
Yes, words are too woolly when it comes to sound. "Talking about music is liking dancing about architecture" as Zappa or Thelonious Monk or someone like that said. We're up against a bit of a challenge as we're discussing this in your second language - unfortunately my understanding of Spanish is limited to the food I cook, sorry! I too don't have one sound in my mind, which is why I said clips/samples (plural!) Also I would take absolutely no notice of what players are using to get that sound you like - it is all but irrelevant as there are so many variables. But the joy of me getting to hear bass sounds that you'd like to have on your gigs (and they can be quite diverse tones) is that I hear what you like to hear - there are no words to misunderstand and as long as we're both listening through headphones or decent speakers neither of us should end up after the wrong tone. For example, here's what I want a bass cab to be able to do: (And yes, I know they're less than perfect quality but I'm quite good at filtering out the imperfections that the digital encoding has introduced!) Both those heads have pretty transparent power amp stages, so if you like the sound of them DI'd through a good PA, good headphones or good (good is important!) studio monitors then you'll like a fairly transparent cab. Mr Foxen is right on the money with that! I don't tend to take much notice of what people are using to get a sound because there are too many variables - and I've heard more great sounds because the player is great and despite the rig being less than wonderful, than the other way around! But the rigs/player you mention implies you're after something pretty clean (like that AJ clip?) So when it comes to seeing if there is a Barefaced cab to suit it tends to be a case of me having a listen and working out what tones you're after, then matching up the Barefaced cabs with the bass/strings/amp you're using and sussing out if any of those combinations will suit what you need tonally, and then looking at the rig you're currently using and the gigs you're playing, and then ascertaining you have enough power to drive these tonally suitable Barefaced cabs loud enough. Then there's also the size/weight requirement and also the desire for modularity or not. Part 1 - clips of desired sounds Part 2 - basses and strings Part 3 - amps and current cabs Part 4 - typical gigs and how the current amps/cabs perform at them Part 5 - practicalities Hope that makes sense! Best regards, Alex
-
Thanks for the reply, I can't remember settings I made a year ago to stuff, let alone a decade ago... Once I get my hands on a USB/MIDI cable in a few days I'll see if I can edit MIDI stuff on the V-AMP and approach it from that end.. In some ways that would be preferable because I would not need to reprogram my Motif as well.. Cheers Mark
Hi Mark - well, I know exactly what you mean and I certianly did do *something* to change the MIDI channel send myself....err.r..... it's just a case of what! I'm sorry to say the ole grey cells aren't what they used to be and I can't remember how to access and edit the board. Mine *may* have been a little different as I ended up buying the upgrade chip from ART too. I've been using a Roland FC-200 MIDI board for probably ten years or so now and the menu system on that is similarly convoluted! - Thankfully my TC effect rack has a 'learn' button - so I can config the effects unit instead. Would have been far easier to have the same function on the Behri' eh?!! Sorry I can't be much more help but I am pretty certain I had the Bypass button doing something useful!
Does this count? :-)

Nice :-) -
Hi Dood, Can I pick your brains please? Got the X15 hooked up to V-AMP and mostly working fine given that ART/Yamaha's version of MIDI commands is different from Behringers :-) however the worst issue is that the Bypass button on the X15 sends Midi 84 which slams the Behringer into config mode which is not quite what I would like - I would prefer it to put the V-AMP into straight through mode... The ART manual is not clear on how you might change the Midi Control change from 84 to summat else - just that setting option 6 in the bypass button setup sends 84, without mentioning what options 1-5 might send differently... 84 is a real pain because it tends to clear the previous setup in the V-AMP... Any ideas? CHEers Mark

I tend to agree that most of them have never tried the kit... I did look at a Line 6 X3 live a few weeks ago - and I much prefer the Behringer....This may have been down to an incompetent sales kid but the Behringer sounds more real and less processed..

Just thought I would share my experiences... I've always been a bit of a minimalist (in terms of addon/fx's) preferring to run big decent quality rigs to get a great, but narrow, range of tones. I also have to confess I'm a keyboard player and needed to start using my feet more to help with rapid patch changes as I don't want to lug around a Rick Wakeman size setup.. So a couple of months ago I bought a "faulty" ART X15 Ultrafoot controller, reset it to defaults and suddenly it was no longer faulty.. Result for £20... The band I'm playing bass in at the moment covers a wide range of material and suddenly I needed to be a bit more flexible in terms of tone/textures and having already got the foot controller I looked around for MIDI driven amp/cab modellers with some effects.. I acquired a Behringer V-AMP bass pro (yes, cheap, nasty, horrid I know) on the basis that if it sort of worked ok it would encourage me to get something better (and £55 posted was not a huge price to pay).. I did some reading on the talkbass.com and set the unit up as was suggested by them rather than Behringer.. To say I'm gobsmacked is an understatement.. This is probably the most effective £55 I've ever spend on gear. It's quiet, does not sound thin or over processed, and the inbuilt tuner works a treat.. It may break down, but hey, I'll buy a spare... Most of the reported issues seem to come from people not realising it has an CR2032 watch battery you need to change every few years. I've got three in my case, they cost 50p each.. Cheers Mark

I've queried something as a buyer (non-delivery of a service) and I had to go through quite a long winded process to get my money back. Maybe paypal rip the money back from the seller immediately but hang on to it whilst they make the unhappy buyer jump through hoops? -
Mick Karn used to play a WAL fretless I believe.. So are there any Japan tribute acts? And you get to wear make-up as well which should alleaviate the Rolf lookalike issue ....

It's getting it to stay assembled that requires genius surely? :-)
No, a genius.
+1 Originality is only a good thing when 1) it is actually original 2) it is interesting musically Otherwise we fall into the modern art trap of "Art is anything that generate an emotion" ... I would argue that the nett emotion should be positive.. Cheers Mark
Of course not, but I wanted to put some sort of perspective on this, that just because a band is an originals band doesn't mean it's any good, or, even if it is good within its selected genre, that I would want to listen to that genre.
Look on the bright side though - Stoke is now lap dancing central from what I've seen :-) Now there's an idea - lap dancing to live music... :-)

Rickenbacker 4001... Hated everything about it apart from the neck.. Was convinced it was me rather than the bass and I would get to love it.. Never happened... Mark
Stingray...
I use (someone elses) one from time to time, and I'm not offended by it.. Would I buy one for myself..? Probably not unless it was seriously cheap. They seem to go for between £200 and £300 on Ebay when I've noticed them there.. However for me they're a bit too big (for rehearsing with) and not quite enough poke for live. Plus of course has little name recognition even though all the small music shops are full of Line 6 gear.

Something "A bit different" for you...

Already discussed and admired ..:-) It's a relist .. -
And again welcome.... Also it helps that as we get older we lose access to all but the lower frequencies in our hearing as well :-)
-
Or you could restring it with the correct weight strings - unless you like very tight strings... This would be the implied issue with the previous post..
-
Or buy another 15 2x10's :-)
