1.
As a nip playing in church, I got used to playing the same song in almost every key based on who was singing that night or if they felt they reach the key I would get told the song is in G then they would tell me during the song to transpose to B.. I'm so grateful for those days now as transposing is easy to me.. I understand the arguement that some notes may not sound better.. but i'm pretty sure if you hired Nathan East he won't say 'why are we not playing it in the original key'
I don't buy the "it will sound just as good in any key" line. There are some songs that just shouldn't be buggered about with. Many a band have I heard murder some decent covers by executing them in a wholly inappropriate key. I had a five string once and although navigation of the fretboard became less of a problem after some homework, I was never able to fully adapt my slapping style to cater for the narrower spacings and extra fretboard width. I came to the conclusion that if and when I was able to do everything that had ever been done on a four string I would re-consider. I think I've got a long wait ahead of me!
2. The backline only get together for this little soire went very well today. I'm still not sure of the cause of all this key change nonsense, however, the vocalists were blamed in their absence! I don't have a problem playing songs in different keys as I have enough years experience to navigate my way around the fretboard. What I don't get is the difference between playing Sir Duke in B (original) and doing it one step down makes. I understand that allows the brass to play in concert C, but they were there today and said they don't get a shout in what key the songs are played in, so it must be down to the vocals. A bit odd they can't stretch to the original key, but hey ho, I would much rather play Sir Duke in B flat than Disco Inferno. Without dropping the tuning/changing bass I lose my lowest note (open E) in Disco Inferno. Going up to the nearest E ruins the dynamics of the song. That's what annoys me; the general acceptance of "just play it up the octave" when it should be the lowest note in the song. Perhaps I'm just too fussy? The other gems we had today was "I know it doesn't go like that in the original, but that's the way we do it", "I thought that was wrong when we learnt it and it's too late to change it now" and the classic "you just do what you normally do, it sounds better anyway" (which made me blurt out "I'm pretty sure that's what LaBelle thought when they wrote it"). Sometimes i just don't know when to keep my mouth shut!
3. My band has a brass section and we play it in C, so it can't be that difficult!
4. So, a mate booked a gig with his band which their bass player has since bailed out on, so he rings me and asks me if I would be prepared to do it. Knowing that his band play 80% of the stuff we do, I immediately say yes. What I later discover is that 80% of the songs that we have in common are in a different key. I know it shouldn't bother me, but it does, especially at such short notice. I've been playing most of these songs in their original key for about 15 years and get through them on auto pilot. I think it's actually worse having to play a song you know so well in a different key rather than learning a new one from scratch. I mean, who plays Disco Inferno in b flat for frak's sake?
5. Relisted on eBay here http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1555.l2649 (with some better photos) however, I'm willing to listen to offers from Bass Chatters
6. It's on eBay, so I guess it's that unless I get a reasonable offer in the near vicinity.
7.
Unfortunately forum rules mean you need to state a price... You can't win, haha! I wouldn't know where to start with a price guide tho, sorry. Good luck selling
Sorry Merton. Please accept my humble apologies. I've just put it back on the bay. Whilst I'm not willing to let it go for a song, that price ISN'T firm as it really has to go for me to be able to afford what I'm after. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be too late and I end up with no V8 and no #1 GAS
8. Rather than starting a new one, the original header for this thread has been heavily modified and it may be worth a read if you're interested.
9.
TE serial dates can be confusing, but as far as I can remember, first part is the type, next, the two digit number is the serial number ( I have seen numbers in the 90's BTW) mines 36 I think, next is the date, so 200 is, 2 = second quarter, 00 = year 2000, so 2nd quarter 2000. Mine is 301 = 3rd quarter 2001.
You're not wrong, that IS confusing! The whole number on mine is TO136/12/200, so an early one then. Thanks for the info.
10.
The serial numbers on the V8s so far logged appear to follow a consistent, numerical sequence and mine's 86. Only 25 V4 combos were made. Not sure about the V8 style V4 heads but rumours I've heard are that the same number were made.
Hi Crazykiwi, You mentioned "serial numbers so far logged". Did you find the list of V8 owners? I don't know what your amp shows, but my serial number is: 5 letters and numbers / a number (in your case 86) / 200. This format suggests to me 200 were made. Could it be possible that the 200 incorporates all V heads whether 4, 6 or 8?
11.
If I owned this, I'd never sell it as I was under the impression that Trace made less than 100. I did play one of these a few years ago and it was just monstrous and I'm not necessarily a valve amp person. Were the price tag a bit lower, I'd imagine there would be quite a few folk on this forum with bits of your arm hanging out of their mouths....
Wise words indeed. It's a very strange feeling owning one of a line that were manufactured in such very limited numbers. It's not a feeling that I'm over familiar with. The jury is indeed out as to how many V8's were actually made. Some sources claim 100, others say 200 and I don't think Trace Elliot ever knew exactly. Mine is such a low serial number it doesn't help in that regard, but 200 worldwide is still fairly exclusive. There was a guy on the web who attempted to catalogue all the V8 serial numbers and their locations, but I think that has been taken down now. I used to feel as though I should move the amp on as I'm not using it at the moment, but on the other hand, I know if parted with it I may never see or own one again. However, I have come to a crossroads where I have been offered THE bass that has been number one on GAS list since I can't remember when. I know I would get much more pleasure out of owning the bass, so the amp really should go....
12. This doesn't come with any of the speaker enclosures shown in the pictures. There is speculation as to exactly how many of these heads were made, but they were made only in very limited numbers.
13. This is my Trace Elliot V8 head and it is in great condition. As previously mentioned, I'm selling it because I have seen a bass that I really want and therefore need to raise some funds to put towards it. I saw the bass on Monday and it was everything I hoped it would be, so I am firmly commited to selling this. The head has been gigged a couple of times some years back, but since then it hasn't been used at all. When I did use it live, it was not subject to any volume abuse so the valves have plenty of miles left in them. It comes complete with it's power lead, user guide (photocopy only I'm afraid), TE footswitch unit and two lime green TE three pin leads for speaker connection. It doesn't come with a flight case or cover of any kind. I've never laid out for a case myself as it never leaves the house. For those with a dodgy back, please beware, this amp is heavy! It comes in at 28.4 kilos (four and half stone). Due to the weight/fragility I really don't want to ship this. You are very welcome to collect it from me in South Essex or I would be willing to deliver it or meet you somewhere in between, depending on the distances involved. Due to the reason for sale I cannot accept any trades, unless you happen to be the man who has my future next bass. Price: WITHDRAWN. Payment by bank transfer preferred or cash.
14. Bump. On eBay too, but will withdraw for a sale here. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MESELX:IT
15. Shameless bump. Any personal inspection of this beauty is welcomed.
16. Sorry I missed your post. Haven't been on for a couple of days. I'll PM you.
