hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in Bass Guitars
Just lifted raised the A and the D a quarter turn, plugged in and whoah! Love it. I think I might have to sell something and get a 5'er 😀- 22 replies

NBD - Unexpected Ken Smith BSR 4WT purchase
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks mate. Looking at the frets, I'm struggling to see any play wear at all. I'm kind of curious at to its history now. Moot point I suppose as it's here and it's paid for.- 22 replies

It’s not often I read the Sunday e-mail from Bass Direct. I kind of scan it and rely on looking at the photos of the used section on Monday to see what’s new. Well, I’m jolly glad I did read it Sunday just gone, because there was a Ken Smith BSR 4WT mentioned in the list that wasn’t on the site and I've been after one for a while now. I quickly e-mailed Mark and said I would have it subject to seeing photos and getting a bit more info on it. He came back to me quickly saying it was due in any day and that it was a 2015 build and in excellent condition. A home use ungigged kind of deal. A day or so went by and Mark sent me a couple of photos and it was exactly what I'd hoped it would be. There was a bit of confusion at one point when I received and e-mail addressed to someone else saying it was on hold. Apparently I was not the only one who was after it, so if anyone here was enquiring and lost out, I do apologise. Anyhow, I paid for it yesterday and it arrived just after lunch today - that’s under 24 hours folks! What a bass this is. Lovely weight and balance, plus the neck is just spot on for me - very Jazz like and not very deep either. It's set up quite low, possibly too low for me even, so I'll have a little adjustment session later. I haven’t had a chance to plug it in yet, but so far, so excellent. I know there are some here that don't like coffee table basses, but I think this one is quite understated compared to some.

Overcoming psychological block
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to lozkerr's topic in General Discussion
I don’t know the song that well from a playing perspective, but this guy seems to have it down. If you’re struggling with the octaves on the ascending B A C# E section, try doing the C# octave on the E string. Might make it easier? -
Kind words thank you @AndyTravisand you do have an insight into my motive for selling - nothing to do with this bass folks as it’s a superb instrument. I do have my eye on something else which, if it becomes suddenly unavailable (read ‘sold to someone else’), then this will be coming off the market.

This bass was completed on 5th June 2008 and is one of limited run of 50 in a 4 string configuration, one of which is held in the Alembic Archives in Santa Rosa. Point of interest: Alembic suffered a slight administrative error and 'accidentally' produced two Spyder 4 basses bearing identical series numbers. The serial numbers are different though and both instruments are separated by the Atlantic. This bass is not either of the two in question. I'm not fully up to date with this bit of info, but as of about 7 years ago, there were only six Spyder 4's left available for commission. It may well be less than six now, but at least one must still be available as the Spyder Ltd Ed model is still featured on their price list as of August 2021. The current list price (which does not include VAT or import charges) is $24,900. This bass is in excellent condition and comes complete with its OHSC, certificate and tool pack. The case is really large and quite heavy - it's more like a guitar safe than a case. For this reason, combined with the rarity of the bass itself, I wouldn't be comfortable shipping it. I would however consider delivering it personally to any prospective buyer for fuel costs. This clearly means that this a UK sale unless someone wants to travel to the UK to collect it. The specification for this bass is: Spyder 4 Limited Edition 1 of 50 (technically 1 of 51 as detailed above) Top Wood: Flame Maple Back Wood: Flame Maple Body Wood: Walnut Neck Wood: Maple with Purpleheart Stringers Fingerboard: Ebony Inlays: Mother of Pearl Ovals Body Finish: Clear Gloss Neck Finish: Satin Electronics: Anniversary Electronics with pick-up selector on lower horn Machine Heads: Gold Custom Features: Red side LED's, Elongated Peg-Head and Sterling Silver spider web inlays on body Weight: 12.4lbs Nut Width: 45.4mm The bass takes 4 x PP9's to power the active circuitry and the LED's. The strings that are on it are almost new (there is a spare used set of XL strings in the case). The neck relief is set ridiculously low and it takes it very well indeed. For anyone not used to Alembics, the control system takes a bit of getting used to, but I'll include a photo of what the knobs and switches do to make it a bit clearer.

Bowie's Bassists - Tony Visconti

I’m a big fan of Belew, but he had a nightmare at the last Bowie Celebration I went to. He was clearly winging it and failing. -
Any experience of band members in the police service?
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to Len_derby's topic in General Discussion
I would just like to say in response to some comments I've read here that shift-work in the Police Service is most definitely not the same a shift-work at Tesco etc. You don't get paid for the first half an hour for starters! Also, whatever the regulations might say about publishing shifts in advance (for 12 months I think I read somewhere) that is subject to an extensive list of caveats which means realistically you would never know what you're doing that far in advance. For example, drummer might be posted on A Shift. For a multitude of reasons (skill base, staff level, internal moves, promotions etc) drummer might not even be on A shift in 12 months time, so don't bank on that. The Chief reserves the right and there is bugger all you can do about it. Another example which happens regularly, 'exigency of duty'. Something like COP comes along drummers rest days are cancelled. Nothing you can do about it and don't think just because it's in Scotland it won't effect where you are. I would say the biggest danger as far as the OP is concerned (dependant on the role drummer takes on) is extended duties. If she's frontline on Response or similar and she's due off at 4 with a gig that evening, expect the worst. That said, I managed 22 years of playing in bands around front line Police shift-work and never failed to turn up. I will say that the Service was a lot healthier then than it is now. Where I live they are on their knees. -
Bowie's Bassists - Tony Visconti

I've seen various iteration of this opening song from this tour, but this one is still my favourite. Rockpalast '96. The guy was so damned cool. Sitting on a chair at a desk with his back to the crowd enjoying his band doing their thing. Great opening tune. -

Maybe not stripped back, but certainly re-imagined.... -

Great version, but I also quite like this stripped back version. Nice re-imagining of the famous ascending line by Gail. He did a similar thing with Andy Warhol in the late 90's. -

The track ‘Magical’ was written about her relationship with DB. -
Could have become very confusing if it was Billy Sheehan you were talking to 😂

Dave, you've just reminded me of one of my favourite later Bowie tracks. I always love playing this one. In fact the whole Heathen album is excellent IMHO with '5:15 The Angels Have Gone' and 'Everyone Says Hi' being favourites. -
Apart from Q10, I think it's 'no' to every one from me. P.S. I did buy a synth pedal (Future Impact) that whizzed off the keyboard player in a band though 😂
