1. Direct link to cineworld if it's needed: http://www.cineworld.co.uk/cinemas/32?film...bileAgent=false I'd be there BUT I'm booked in to see Tony Levin and Steve Gadd round the corner at Ronnie Scott's - so I could see the film but miss the Q&A. And I'm having my diamond slippers adjusted that evening too.
2. Another +1 for Maiden - but aim for a steady stream of 8th (or 16th) notes rather than the Maiden "gallop". This means you'll have a different finger on the "one" each time, but it'll feel ok after a bit of practice. Start at a comfortable BPM and work up to your target by 5 BPM every day. Don't try to do too much too soon and strain something!
3. The singer's resigned as well now! He can't afford the time from the other bands/gigs he's committed to in the search for a new drummer. In the meantime, guitarist and I will be moping in a pub somewhere in Putney tonight. What tales of band woe have you got to make me feel better?
4. Hello I've just had the drummer of a band resign on the day of a rehearsal - and as I'm sure you know we're liable for 100% of the cost of the studio if we pull out at short notice. It's in Studio 3 at RMS in Putney, 6-11pm, see http://www.rmsstudios.co.uk/studio.html - £45 without drums, £50 with. So, if anyone wants it please drop me a line at [email protected] as soon as poss. Musicians, eh. Tony
5. Good work! Good luck for the final. I lived in Horsham in the early 1990s and my first ever band was in the Battle of the Bands three years running. We came 2nd, 3rd and erm unplaced respectively. Does it still take place in the bandstand outside Waitrose? It were all fields, etc.
6.
I've always felt the same. Not entirely sure why now
Relayer's my favourite Yes album - and Going For The One counts as classic Yes as well. 90125 is a brilliant album, but it's not prog any more. After that it gets a bit patchy until Magnification.
7. Here's Im at the Grammy Les Paul tribute http://video.mail.ru/mail/e.paskalova/12860/19874.html ...with Jeff Beck, Narada and Rhonda in the band. Who's the rhythm guitarist?
8. Stevie should have known better than to attempt performing his own song live without at least 4 clavinets on stage. AND he's not even drumming! pfft
9.
"they should take out the dislike button for all Stevie Wonder songs" Priceless.
Right on. FWIW I like the Sesame Street version:
10. Something you don't hear on Stevie's version: listen to the "horns only" track on the above link, 0m28s in. Bless you!
11. Incidentally, one of my bands is currently working on a cover that's somewhere between the original, the BBA version and Stevie Ray Vaughan's live version. In the SRV version, Tommy Shannon does a great job of picking out the right bits of the arrangement for the bassline. See if you can track down a copy. (Of course it's in Eb rather than E though)
12.
A few years ago, someone here posted a link to a sound analysis of Superstition - the riff turned out to be layer upon layer upon layer of clavinet, all played by Stevie.
Good luck reproducing this lot! http://homerecording.about.com/od/mixingyo...uperstition.htm 16 tracks in all, 8 of which are clav.
13. I got the Eagle Mountain SRV "Note" strap - eg http://www.gjsguitars.com/eagle-mountain-s...essories-straps - I didn't pay that much for it though. Sturdy and comfy on my Jazz bass. My favourite strap is the D'Addario with the sliding shoulder strap. No more shirt-tugs! They're hard to come by these days though - I got my most recent from www.shopoftheworld.com, couldn't find them in a recent search though.
14.
Yeah, you can fit that lot in-there is tons of space in the iGig G515 model. There is plenty of padding between the bass and the pockets, so you don't need to worry. I pretty much never use a hard case anymore.I've had my bass in fully loaded vans,in just the iGig,and it's always been fine.
Brilliant. Thanks for the reply - currently my rehearsals are all in and around London on so I do it all by public transport. The current setup is ageing Stagg (or similar) gig bag plus a Samsonite wheelie suitcase which despite being pretty sturdy is also feeling the strain. I think if I can get my essentials in a sturdy gig bag and ditch the wheelie I'd be on to a winner and more relaxed journey for me and anyone who's sadly been on the receiving end of a bass/wheelie case combination in rush hour. Dear Santa...
15. At least one of each right now, if that helps
16.
I'm almost certain you'd get all of the above in an igig with room to spare. Whether packing all this gear with the bass would compromise protection is another issue: I'm not sure I'd want to try it.
Good point, and something I'd been wondering about. With my current gig bag (a Stagg - pretty good but on its last legs) I put a couple of old folded up t-shirts on the bass body's front before zipping up, just protect against whatever's rattling around in the not-too-generous front pocket. Is there padding between the front pocket and the main compartment of an iGig bag?
17. Question for iGig users: Could I get the following in the pockets? Analogman Bi-Comp compressor SansAmp Programmable BDDI Boss TU-12 Tuner 2x 3m leads, 2x patch cable 1x 5m XLR cable (If it helps I can provide approx dimension) Thanks!
18. Good idea to video it - also I've found that doing an extra clip for the tricky or important bits helps too. Otherwise +1 to writing out the music. Or getting the new boy to do it for himself.
19.
4mins 36 sec ..... technique pino
Pino's fingers were the stunt double for the face huggers in the Alien films
20.
Doug Johns uses the scrunchy dampener too
And Victor Wooten
21. Is the Line6 JM-4 majorly expensive? About £200 I think.
22. Absolutely - brilliant, world class drummer. Very good singer late 70s/early-mid 80s Genesis, but his songwriting mostly schmaltzy. His current Motown project - embarassing.
23.
Meh.. I disagree. The Lady Lies, No Reply at All, Me & Sarah Jane, Behind the Lines, Illegal Alien.... I wouldn't say it was rare! However, We Can't Dance and Calling All Stations were rotten attempts. He might as well have not bothered.
The Lady Lies is one the very rare exceptions BTL is great too admittedly. I love MASJ but never thought the bass playing was stand-out. NRAA surprises me as it's the one track on Abacab I will pretty much always skip, and I find the bass line a bit cheesy. Shame as otherwise Abacab is just about the last good album. (Genesis has a very good first side then loses it completely on side two - that's track 5 onwards, CD fans) Also - what I meant to add about the Hackett clip that kicked this off: what's *really* missing is Moog Taurus bass synth.
