Moving to London - Where to find the Music Scene?
toneknob replied to faceman's topic in General Discussion
Welcome to London! You'll have a blast. Buy Time Out every week. Go through the gigs section and go to a different venue or see a different band every time. They list the entry price so you can pick out the free/cheap ones if money's tight. You're spoilt for choice in that part of town with Camden nearby and local KT venues that others have mentioned. Go to gigs and get chatting to people - you'll make contacts just by seeing the same faces at venues or following bands. Sign up to every ticket agency and venue's website and mailing list you can think of. I've got a dedicated email address just for this. Look on gumtree for bands looking for bass players, there's usually no shortage. -
Sounds like your current bandmates are stopping the band progressing by their obstinate nature. You're doing all the work, so tell them it's their turn to look for a singer. Let them find someone suitable, and say you'll be ready when they are. In the meantime, start up something new with the singer you've mentioned, who sounds positive, talented and flexible. If the other two band members answer your ads, make sure you include "The Pina Colada Song" as an audition piece.

Hi - I bought a Markbass Super Booster pedal from martin8708, he was helpful and prompt in answering questions, posted the item quickly and packaged it like a pro. Thumbs up! Tone

I love Pino's new band. Who's the guy on guitar?

When recording in the studio I'd be happy to use whatever the engineer/producer thinks is appropriate for the song - if anything, then whatever he's experienced with. For home recording, I'd use a stomp box in preference to software, again if it's needed. In rehearsal, typically I'm either using the studio's amps or going straight to the PA via DI box. In both cases I'll use a stomp box, as firstly with all amps pointing into the middle of the room, things can get muddy quickly and I find compression helps prevent the bass from overwhelming the room while maintaining an appropriate volume. I've got a Trace Elliot Dual Compressor and a Analogman Bicomprossor, both in active rotation (although not at the same time)
So the Hereford date actually happened then? I literally only just found out about it! Nobody I know is into jazz/fusion so wouldn't have paid any attention if they knew. I am so incredibly annoyed I didn't know about it if it went ahead!
Nope, the Hereford gig was the cancelled one, and the Boom Boom Club date replaced it. -
Focus are still touring!... if you get the chance to see them do so!...Great live band.
They're on the Prog Stage at the High Voltage festival in Victoria Park, Saturday July 24.

Yep, Hocus Pocus. Dig this clip from 1973. Stay tuned for the near-explosion caused by the whistling solo towards then end.
Meant to include this link in my previous post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_%28The_Kinks_song%29
Agree with the above - here's the song on youtube.
I really like a lot of the songs but I Just Called makes me whince.
Sure. At Hyde Park we got one verse and one chorus and the ending (cha cha cha). I'm happy to put up with that in exchange for Living for the City, Higher Ground, Superstition, I Wish, Another Star, Sir Duke, Master Blaster, We Can Work It Out, Uptight, For Once In My Life, Fingertips, Signed Sealed Delivered...
That's because Superstition has a keyboard bass, played by SW originally. Also, its in Eb, but then I think there's enough Eb in SWs set to make Nate detune his bass by a semi-tone, as I understand.
Fans of the original Superstition might like this: http://homerecording.about.com/od/mixingyo...uperstition.htm - a track-by-track breakdown of the recording. Nate played the song on bass guitar at the O2 a couple of years ago. I thought it was a refreshing change to see him on keyb bass for a few songs. Plus he gets a sit down - it was a hot day.

Hope this comes in handy: http://preview.tinyurl.com/35q5bm4 I've been to many but not all, and pretty much agree with what's been said so far (but wouldn't give Survival such a hearty welcome, I'm afraid). Also, I like Rogue in Bermondsey - not easy to get to but among the cheaper options, and rather unusually and refreshingly has an online booking system.

Six brilliant bass players in three days: Dr Matt Destruction Jeff Ament Paul Jamiroquai Nathan Watts P-Mac and Stevie's left hand looking forward to it!
Ive got to play this live soon filling in ...spotted this version by the Black Crowes and loved it..awsome groove..whos that plying the Sadowsky? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09WlrVnramo
That's half of Dave Letterman's house band: Paul Schaffer on keys, Anton Fig on drums, and Will Lee on bass.
A recommendation (that I should do myself) in addition insurance, which I have through MU & Hencilla Canworth, is to get a UV marker pen and write you post code in assorted places, such as in the control cavity.
Good tip - although I'd also/alternatively use something more individual like your national insurance number, birthday (DD/MM/YYYY format) or passport number, for example.
I tried Music Guard, but it's a very rare instrument so MG want a valuation from a recognised dealer, though they wouldn't say who. I'm still waiting for over a year for "Vintage & Rare" to get back to me, so for now I'm running a big risk.
I had to ask V&R for valuations for a couple of my older guitars, luckily I work round the corner so I could go in on a regular basis and pester them. You'd think for the amount a valuation costs you'd get a quick turnaround. While we're on the subject, can anyone recommend anywhere else to get valuations done?
Check the policy cover very carefully and if you have any doubts call the company in question. I'm not sure original receipts are necessary, depending on your type of cover (again, check with your company). Anyway, you don't really care about how much you paid for something, you care about the cost of replacing it. Photos of the item, with yourself in the picture, are always a good idea. My wife recently lost the stone out of her engagement ring - we had no receipt (what do they expect after 30 years!!) and we had to rely on photos to prove our ownership and the value of a replacement diamond. I suppose it helped that we still had the ring itself. Insurance claims can be tricky things.
I agree with this - I have Musicguard cover on some vintage and valuable equipment. Much of it was bought second-hand, so receipts are rare. I asked MG for clarification on proof of ownership, they said photos of me with the equipment would be ok, I have pictures of my schedule printed out with the equipment. if you move house, take new pictures in a room which can obviously be identified as being in your new place.
The last one was with Ernest Tibbs.
I think Allan must have been back to the Jazz Cafe with Ernie since I saw him with JJ. Any ideas who was in the band before Jimmy Johnson (not this time, last time). Hope that makes sense... -

Great gig last night - lots of notes and a very loud drummer. Nice to see AH and GH in the pub over the road beforehand! Also, we hung around afterwards - JJ helped me understand his amp-less setup, and I helped him with his pronunciation of "Hereford". Fair swapsies there I think. (btw the last-minute nature of the gig was because the Hereford gig of the tour originally scheduled for Sunday night was cancelled). Help my failing brain: I'm sure I've seen AH twice at the Jazz Cafe - once with Chad Wackerman and JJ, another time with Chad Wackerman and another bassist. Who was the mystery bassist whom I've forgotten? -
Very sad news. Full story on http://www.mickkarn.net/ - including a link to paypal to give your donations of support.
Haha, yeah I had to do a double take too! They are playing at Ronnie's on Friday and Saturday but not keen on that place...
I'm going. £37 at Ronnie's, £12 at Sutton FC Social Club. The Kronenbourg is cheaper n'all. I was at the Jazz Caff gig where it was AH, JJ and Chad Wackerman. J was too quiet! Hope they sort that out this time. -
Bump. Another Invisible Lead Soup gig this week - this time at Arch 635 in Clapham, just round the corner from Clapham North and Clapham High St stations.
