1. *looks at topic title* Sometimes I play a J, sometimes a J#
2.
@3:28., They all step up and play so casually at the speed of light... Fabulous musicianship from top players.
I saw them at the Barbican a couple of weeks ago, with a drummer and guitarist friend. We all left like
3. You can see his current Elektric Band pedal board in this video, it's pretty basic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6C9G-4-Kmo Also around 3m20s you can see him get his cable futzed around his pedals just a like a normal person.
4. Is it this one? http://www.goodreads.com/work/editions/10086288-the-electric-guitar-an-illustrated-history I've got a previous edition, like this one on eBay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rock-Music-The-Electric-Guitar-Fwd-by-Keith-Richard-/382105108937 (One of the other chapters is about the Parker Fly if that helps)
5. I'd love to hear Jeff Berlin's reaction to that (even having witnessed the Jeff vs Vic spats on fb recently)
6. I'll be at the London gig, bit of an odd choice of venue after the last couple of shows I've seen him play in recent times - at the Palladium and the Jazz Cafe.
7. Indeed, sounds interesting. Anyone remember Oysterhead? Maybe we shouldn't yet.
8. I played half a dozen numbers with my wedding band, all easy rock&roll/12-bar stuff. We'd rehearsed All Shook Up in Bb (as recorded) then at the last minute changed it to A to help the singer/lead guitarist. Having recently got married and all that, I totally forgot. Luckily everyone was trousered by this point (the main course was delayed 90 minutes, so everyone was drinking the plonk on an empty stomach) so it didn't really matter. Except to the singer, the other guitarist, the drummer (yes!) who all glared/laughed at me.
9. Have you tried playing along to mp3s of the originals in rehearsal? Plug a phone or mp3 player into the PA, you could fairly easily EQ it (or alter it in audio software) to better isolate or emphasise the vocal. Too elite for him?
10.
The last straw was the police on horseback in the pub.
I hope Andy wore his jaunty hat
11. Here's the setlist from last night for those who are interested in what kind of material we're doing... All Blues Soul Intro/The Chicken Meeting Of The Spirits Round The Bend * So What Song For Kippie * Birdland Finding The Sweet Spot * Space Chameleon Stratus * = Velcro original. Some of this may well appear at the Tottenham gig on Wednesday, but we like to change it every time.
12.
Brian Cant.
but Val Doonican
13.
Velcro Pelmet is possibly the greatest band name ever
Thanks! (I wouldn't go as far as "ever" though...!)
14.
A little of each to be honest
I'll let him know! He's a bit of a Zappa fan tbh, (see moustache). And looks more like Joe Zawinul. Confused? I usually am.
15. Hi, My band Velcro Pelmet have two London gigs coming up very soon; one in Southwark, the other in Tottenham. We'll be doing our selection of originals and standards from the genre at both. Hope to see you at one or the other! Saturday May 20th The Union Jack in Southwark (225 Union St, London SE1 0LR - very close to Southwark tube and handy for both London Bridge and Waterloo) 8pm start free admission facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/123867038176779/ Wednesday May 24th Smooth Jazz Lounge at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (Town Hall Approach Rd, London N15 4RX - not far from Seven Sisters, Tottenham Hale, Bruce Grove etc) 9pm start free admission "with a drink" facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1322022687881586/ You can hear what we sound like at https://velcropelmet.com/music but watch out for the autoplay!
16. You don't want to get any inconvenient cables getting in the way like this amateur http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jPW0XWuo6g
17.
Maybe I had the advantage of never having heard any of the extracts before, with no idea whatsoever as to who it was playing. Yup, an innocent Candide, that's me.
yes but by the time you've heard it 4 or 5 times, during the course of the survey, you know what it's going to be.
18.
I have the dots for Mayer's Who Did You Think I Was and Pino makes it all look far too easy
Can you send me a copy?
19.
I'm not certain, but it seemed to me to be much like the football league, where each extract has to be pitted against each of the others. As, then, there are eight samples, each has to be played seven times (once against each of the others...), so twenty-eight plays in all. A 'league table' can then be drawn up, which would give some idea of 'difficulty'. May be wrong, though.
Oh yes, totally agree. It's just that in each "fixture" you HAVE to listen to all of Sting and all of Flea (or whoever it is) every time, even though we know Flea is "harder" than Sting. Once you've heard a few notes of the Seven Days line, you know what it's going to be.
20. Done and emailed! With only a relatively limited number of samples it'd be good if you only had to listen to each clip in its entirety once rather than every single trial. We know it's say Sting vs Flea (or whoever) in the first few seconds listen, so no need to hear the clip all the way to the end (unless it's a part of The Science that I don't appreciate from this end)
21.
What if it turns out that we are all Clown-whores?
There's nothing wrong with being sexy
