1.
I saw them last night at The Lighthouse in Poole, which is an INCREDIBLE theatre/concert hall! The sound was superb. Snarky were as incredible as ever, the last time I saw them was in Brighton about 18 months ago and they have changed their live approach a touch, well more of a refinement. They were less improvisational than before, and mostly kept songs to the album versions. I see no one has really mentioned the support band House of Waters, who were utterly incredible! Very clever trio, with the bass playing the lead melodic role, they're well worth a listen!
Just reading up on HoW, having missed them at Brixton. "Hendrix of the hammered dulcimer" says the bio on their website, which are words I wasn't expecting to see in the same sentence today. I'll have a go with their latest album. What suprised me at Brixton was the sound quality, best I've heard there for ages.
2.
There used to be on off Putney high st, can't remember the name though.
Ritz, or RMS?
3. You've got Unit 9 in Balham, Brixton Hill Studios, and Tone Hound at Clapham Junction. Also Pirate Studios in Earlsfield but that's maybe a bit off piste for you. All ok, you get what you pay for I find. I'd happily go to any of the above again.
4. yeah, exemplified by Mirage by Camel, anything by Oasis or the Stones and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NclgjiuCr-8
5.
For many many years I've been using my index, middle and ring finger to play. Often its my index and ring finger. Initially i moved to this as a kid because Billy Sheehan had that shred thing going on. As time went on i realised my index and ring finger are the same length so my playing style was much straighter/flatter than my index and middle finger, which as my middle finger is about 10mm longer, meant i had to place my hand at quite an angle to play consistently with my index and middle finger. Ive found that using index and ring finger means my middle finger is free and poised to move to the next string really quickly. Any one else experienced this or uses this technique? ( please someone say yes or ill have to leave BS)
Kinda! I use index and middle for alternate plucking, while ring mutes the next higher-pitched string (and thumb mutes the next lower string, or is anchored on the pickup or elsewhere). When moving up a string (eg A to D) the ring finger (already resting on the D string) makes the first pluck, then index and middle subsequently take over alternate plucking, and thumb comes to rest on the A string. If descending a string (eg D to A), just rake from the index or middle plucker and shift the whole shape down.
6.
I'll be at the Brixton gig too. Any more for that one?
Yep, but thanks to a double-booking cock-up I'll be a late arrival. Managed to get a ticket for the Steve Reich show at the RFH on the same night (Colin Currie ensemble playing Drumming and Tellehim), which I'm assuming will be an early enough finish to catch most of Snarky. How's that for a contrasting evening though.
7. Here's a pretty cool Morris dancing video. An ex-colleague is one of the side, he's the one in the hat and bells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqVYDRM842s (I really like the straw man)
8. What was the setlist? I thought The Astonishing was terrible, sorry to say. I really liked them way back when. Awake is brilliant. I saw them at the Forum/Town & Country Club on that tour, again a bit later when they did all of Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast at the Astoria as is their wont when playing multiple nights at the same place.
9. I love records, but have given up on RSD. Every day should be Record Shop/Store Day: http://thequietus.com/articles/19946-record-store-day-2016-shops-bad-reissues-bleugh
10. Akai Deep Impact synth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEaUz-wyjEU
11. Has anyone seen any of Thundercat's current UK shows? Wondering if this made an appearance...
12. From Saturday night's gig, this is the small version, deployed in a Diago case rather than the Pedaltrain board: I found myself quickly wanting after the "from below" power cable access of the Pedaltrain. Signal flow is TC Electronic PolyTune, Ernie Ball 105Q wah, Analogman Bi-Comp, Darkglass Harmonic Booster, MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, Mooer Bass Sweeper, Crowther Prunes & Custard, MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe, MXR Phase 99, Ernie Ball volume pedal. Also, nice carpet.
13. Once In A Lifetime Walking On The Moon Theme from "Jaws"
14. That should say 8pm of course Also, 100% free to get in! Come and say hi if you're around.
15. I once got an email from the bandleader, having spoken to him and emailed previously, and having agreed audition date and material, "we've chosen someone else, he's ok but I'm unhappy we won't get to audition you. I think your previous experience may have intimidated one or two of the band."
16. Hi, My band Velcro Pelmet will be doing our selection of originals and standards from the genre on Saturday March 25th at The Union Jack in Southwark, not far from Southwark tube and handy for both London Bridge and Waterloo. You'll find the venue at 225 Union St, London SE1 0LR. Here's the facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/385924381794438/ and click to https://www.facebook.com/VelcroPelmet/ and you can sign up and see past setlists. You can what we sound like at https://velcropelmet.com/music but watch out for the autoplay! Be there in time for an 80pm kick-off.
17.
What I find odd is that no-one has commented on Lee Pomeroy's basses....unless it's covered in a topic all it's own, in which case, forgive me for mentioning it here....
... and a 5-string Stingray for one of the "new" songs. Full setlist here, looks unchanged for most of the tour: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/anderson-rabin-and-wakeman/2017/eventim-apollo-london-england-4bf9132a.html - apprently Starship Trooper was in there earlier on as well (ie USA dates I think) Great to hear the classic material, I could have done with one less 80s song though, for example Changes, Rhythm Of Love, Lift Me Up - from Union for heavens sake! Worst "Yes" album ever. Agree that no Jon = no Yes. And "album playthrough" gigs like Actual Yes are currently doing are the worst.
18. Decide on the band name before doing any recruitment.
19. High: S2S, Heroes, Low, Lodger, Stage, Scary Monsters. Low: his version of Alabama Song Nick:
20. Greetings from another SW London basschatter!
21. Time-keeping is everyone's responsibility, not just the drummer's. Get an electronic metronome for rehearsals, and plug in to the PA via a volume pedal. Keep it loud to start with, turn down as the band gets better at staying in time.
22.
Bugger. If the stalls have gone I'm out!
I got one no trouble. Hopefully it wasn't the last one
23.
Erm...Tickets aren't on sale for Glasgow yet... I thought it was 10am but website looks to say 12. Will be online at both times
Also Glasgow O2 Priority: https://tickets.o2priority.co.uk/events/vulfpeck/4437
24.
Tickets on sale today. Looks like from midday for Shepherds Bush, not sure for the other venues.
Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out Shepherds Bush has been on sale through O2 Priority since Wednesday, just grabbed myself one.
