And Trevor Horn will be joining the band at the Royal Albert Hall in a few days for their run-through of Drama. Meanwhile, Anderson Rabin Wakeman have an album out later this year. I'm holding out for the Benoit/Bruford/Moraz/Khoroshev line-up doing the Relayer/Tormarto/90125 tour next year. Tony Kaye on synth bass.

New Moon here as well. I have an annual policy but it has in-car cover, also you can specify whether instruments are covered just at home/studio or out and about. Handy for that '54 P-bass that doesn't get gigged any more.
Not really looking to buy another Slammer but thanks for the offer! - FWIW I think you should hold onto it, like you say it's a sentimental keepsake for you, which was really what my original post was about...I think it's great to be able to look back at your first Bass..
Totally dig where you're coming from, but (a) it's taking up space and (2) Mrs Knob has requested a one-in one-out policy. While we're on the subject, there's a "VINTAGE! RARE! 1980 Marlin Slammer (Fender Precision)" on eBay right now, BINOBO £220. I'll stick mine on at £119.95 and see what happens (and I've still got the thumb rest - somewhere)
Mine was a black Marlin slammer P-Bass copy with a maple fingerboard. Bought for £25 in 1988. I now know it was an awful Bass, but at the time I didn't know any different and I did some serious learning on that thing! Often wish I still had it, just for nostalgia.
I'm another who lost their bottom-end virginity to a Marlin Slammer. Still got it, mine is red with white scratchplate, maple (or "maple") neck, single P-style split pickup. Bought from St Mary's Music in Southampton in late 1989 for maybe £70. I'm not sure why they get the grumbles I've seen when googling around, mine is nothing great but plays fine, has ok action and the hardware is in good nick. I'm about to move house so am thinking of selling it on as it's just a sentimental keepsake at the moment. Interested?

Since the news of this week I've given Sign 'O' The Times a couple of spins, what an amazing album. Favourites from that album alone are the title track, Housequake, It, Starfish, Forever In My Life (probably top pick, this one), The Cross, Hot Thing, U Got The Look. (Regarding UGTL I think I surprised Mrs Knob when we were courting by being able to recite the lyrics verbatim when it came on in a bar in Seville) Also this is amazing, from recent shows. So glad I saw him on this tour. Bass solo at about 2m20 btw. I hope my backing band looks this good when I'm in my mid-50s.

Although DD gets huge props for his Bowie involvement - and rightly so, it's my favourite Bowie period as well - he also did an early 80s stint with Stevie Wonder including this gem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6f6BOKXXxg
Really? I did not know that.
Yep, in response to one of Eno's "Oblique Strategies" cards which said "Reverse roles", Dennis played bass and Carlos Alomar played drums. I guess George sat that one out. btw Wikipedia also has Tony Visconti down as bass on BKS so who knows who did what.
Looking at the For Sale ads on this website, there appear to be a lot of people with beautiful high end basses. Looking at the Musicians Wanted ads elsewhere (and posters in pubs), the only bassing requirement in the country is Mustang Sally/Sweet Home Alabama/Money For Nothing lame tired covers. Surely noone buys a £2k bass to play Crazy Little Thing Called Love for the rest of their lives? Note: this post isn't a criticism of owners of expensive basses (or their instruments), it's a question re how on earth (or whether) your average bass-player-in-the-street finds opportunities to play contemporary jazz fusion, experimental post-rock, or other quirky characterful intelligent music which seems worthy of such instruments. Because the idea of playing Sweet Home Chicago ever again fills me with nausea and sadness.
Maybe there's a good reason why none of the jazz fusion and experimental post-rock bands are looking for bass players.

Steve Harris only uses two, confirmed in his recent interview with Bass Player magazine. I use a three-finger technique 99% of the time, but ring finger is used for string damping and first note-plucking when moving up a string. a bit like what Gary Willis does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f5tD9L3h1M (don't look too hard at the youtube channel name)
-
Are you using compression? That'll accentuate any string noise.

Not because it's sad, but because of the joy flowing from the stage when this closed the set at Hyde Park in 2010 (here from the day after at Glastonbury) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt5RyztEXco
Part 2... Tim Lefebvre comes across as such a nice bloke. https://www.youtube....h?v=jc37lAINTBw
Brilliant - thanks for the update.
Peter Gabriel - The Book Of Love.
You beat me to it. "The book of love has music in it, in fact that's where music comes from" *gulp* You can barely see it in this clip, but when the "book" opens at this point in the backdrop video, there's Tony Levin, Ged Lynch and David Rhodes as stick men waving. Lovely. The Book Of Love was one of the readings at my wedding, which is why it's in my top 3 blubbers. The other reading was In My Life... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUDje4cTev0 And we had this sung by our mutual friend who played fairy godmother several years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH9QBocSZAs No, there's just something in my eye
I was going to point out that the Bass player, Vibes, Xylo and Marimba players are all left handed... But someone in the comments has mentioned that the film is backwards.
They were all the rage back in the day. Called Soundies, they were played on a contraption called a Panoram, where they would appear "right way round" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoram and specifically https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reg_Kehoe_and_his_Marimba_Queens)

I've got a few things that might help - a Ditto X2 looper with it's half speed function engaged, a volume pedal, some synth pedals. What's really handy is the time and patience to sit with it all and grok until you get what you need. It's this last bit that usually eludes me.

Our gigs cancelled at request of 'name' tribute act
Similar things happen with some venues in London, if you`ve a gig booked In some venues one of their clauses is that you don't play any other London venues within one month.
Yeah, no one pays any attention to that though. -
Ah, the Comedy. The only gig I did where not only were the originals bands not paid (which is fairly common) but were told (just before going on stage) that we had to pay £5 per amp if we wanted to use the back line we were told would be provided for us. How we laughed!
Take it out of my fee, yeah?
