Pretty much the same feeling as when I saw their covers - don't like it, but I wish I was that good.
-
Speaking of which - my next two pedals to incorporate into the arsenal are a Markbass Super Synth and Sonuus Wahoo. (Both require hook-up to the PC to tinker with properly, which involves a bit more time investment than plug in, tweak controls, go). It's possible the Wahoo might usurp the 105Q - I'll update accordingly as and when.
That sounds not too far from my experience then. I was oblivious to it until one day I noticed it. And once I was tuned to it, I could not ignore it. It's subtle, but -to me- noticeable. How subtle probably depends on a miriad of other factors, from your EQ to other effects...
I should add that I only really noticed when I hooked up the rest of my pedals and then moved the wah's position in the chain. To start the chain was bass->polytune->analogman bi-comp->OC-2->MXR M83->Bushy Bison->Lofi->wah->akai headrush Then I moved the wah: bass->polytune->analogman bi-comp->wah->OC-2->MXR M83->Bushy Bison->Lofi->akai headrush EQ was flat on the amp, Bridge pickup rolled off slightly, bridge on full, tone about 85%.
I'm not familiar with the Mooer Lofi... hmm, I'm curious, I'll check that out. I often used my wah with an overdrive, not very high gain, but the dirtier ("granular", I'd describe it as) the better (OCD clone was great)... if the Lofi is doing what I think it does, I am interested in hearing that noise
Man, it's bonkers. Bass Player Magazine described the Mark Bass Super Synth like this "Hit a note and hear an angry robot come out of your speaker cab. Change the preset, and hear the din of the factory that built that robot. Change it again and witness the epic battle of the angry robots versus the funky aliens". The Lofi is the distress signal of Angry Robot Super Star Destroyer as it gets sucked into and crushed by a black hole.
Yes, please do report back. I'm curious about it now.
As far as I can tell, my 105Q gets the all clear, definitely when A/B'd on its own vs bass straight into the amp (GL sig Jazz into a Ashdown Mag 300 Evo II 4x10 combo, at volumes much more than bedroom, probably slightly less than required to play with an average drummer) What I have noticed though, is that with the pedal in the off position, there is a very very very slight residual wah effect still audible. Again - only the kind of thing that's noticable if you're looking for it. Incidentally - I got some utterly bonkers sounds out of the pedal when paired with my Mooer Lofi Machine desampler. Check out the intro to Steve Vai's "The Guy With The Ball" for my best-guess approximation
Have a great night on Sunday, I missed a show in Glasgow some months ago, sure hope I get the chance again soon. Found this video some time ago. It's an amazing track from the Insurgentes album from a few years ago. Apart from the amazing playing (from the credits on the cd, I just spotted the bass on this is played by Tony Levin, though I've seen live performances with Nick Begg playing it later on, but the two guitars kind of dominate the proceedings on this!) The video has been put together by someone unrelated to the original but it is quite mesmerizing. There is an explanation about it in the about section. I'm sure Steven Wilson must have seen this, and I doubt he would disapprove. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8rgPo6fJyI
No Twilight is a great song. 21/4, time sig fans.

This is a Deep Impact as well, and sounds way nicer than Hysteria if you ask me. Plus, Phish could have Muse in a fight any day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG3OvDMlEp8
Seen a lot of these for sale lately between 600-750 pounds now I have never used one or seen one in the flesh but I am just curious to know what is so good about them to command such a high used value?
As far as I know they're discontinued and this (other synth pedals are available)
I don't know... if you're happy, don't mess with it!!! Don't touch it, don't experiment!!! At home-friendly volume it was not very noticeable, except when using distortion. The pedals all reacted a little differently when the wah was in the circuit, and sounded "cleaner" and "brighter" without the wah. Just a bit, but noticeable. At rehearsal volume and mixed with the band the wah alone was enough to be noticeable.
I'm not deliberately trying to find fault with it, just curious to see if mine does anything noticable (is there a difference?) My experimental set-up wasn't full rehearsal volume (it was just me, so no drummer to compete with volume-wise), but louder (much louder) than at-home bedroom volumes. Anyway, look for an update after Sunday's session
The 105Q "tone suck" went unnoticed by me for quite a while, so let's be clear about that: the pedal works, and it's nice But once I noticed the subtle effect... it's like I zoned on it and I could hear it constantly. The difference in my board with or without it is subtle, and many would probaby think it's nothing... but once I heard it the party was spoilt for me
I'll test again at my next session - this time just bass->105Q->amp and bass->amp. It's times like this I wish I had an A-B box
-
Thanks for the AMT review - I've been keeping my eye on this thread as I've got a 105Q that's been sitting in its box for a while so last weekend I took it along to my monthly-ish "effects familiarisation" solo rehearsal session (ie where I can make as much noise as possible with my boxes without alarming the neighbours, other band members and local wildlife) No tone suck from mine, which was a relief. That was with a Jazz Geddy Lee sig and after TC Polytune, Analogman compressor, MXR chorus and OC-2; before Mammoth close overdrive and Mooer Lofi Machine. Next time I'll be taking along my Wahoo for comparison, assuming I've figured out how it works by then. Good luck with the knee!
Some advice -- as long as you try to figure out basslines and make and read tabs, you'll struggle for the rest of your life.
What's "figure out basslines" got to do with "make and read tabs"? The former is one of the most valuable listening skills things you can acquire - I hear something, can I play it? If you can then write it down (in standard notation in preference tabs), so much the better. I'm looking forward to your FFYL off the cuff video as well! -
Amazing band! See the "for sale" section if you're interested in my spare ticket for the Royal Albert Hall show on Sunday

Hi, I've got a spare ticket for Steven Wilson at the RAH on Sunday night, October 20. Cost (to cover face value plus fees) is £50. The band is phenomenal, with Nick Beggs on bass, plus Chad Wackerman, Theo Travis, Adam Holzman, Guthrie Govan. Here's a nugget of joy from the last tour... I saw him last year at the Borderline, and that was a cracking gig (it came within a week or two of Ian Anderson's TAAB show at Hammersmith, for double Tull value) I missed it this time around due to triple booking that night (Polar Bear and Chrome Hoof being the other two contenders; Polar Bear won, Hoof were playing Saturday night as well so I saw them then). Do you have a setlist for the show?
-
Say someone can't or won't play all the parts they're supposed to, you employ someone who's carefully (or not it would appear in this case) hidden to cover the bits that the player is missing. That's the stunt musician.
I had an excellent view behind the stage, and I didn't see any stunt drummers at all. What I did see, however, is that halfway through the set Mick Fleetwood joins the rest of the band on the front of the stage with an "acoustic" drumkit. After use, this drumkit gets immediately dismantled by roadies behind the stage - perhaps your friend saw this kit being assembled / dismantled?
re the stunt drummer, this just in from pal at the Brum gig. "The stunt drummer was well concealed and there was a lot of gubbins on the stage behind Mick's massive golden kit. Maybe the stunt drummer had the night off in Manchester? Yes, there was a bit halfway through the gig where they went all 'harking back to the old days just us four jamming together'. They wheeled out a normal sized kit at the front of the stage for Mick (it looked like a child's toy with him sat there). Stevie and Lyndsey were hanging by Mick, all great friends. John McVie was still lurking in a dark bit on his own in the corner. The roadies did take Mick's little kit apart straight afterwards and you could see bits being chucked around backstage. I missed the next few songs because I was distracted by everyone around me pointing and going 'look, they're taking the kit apart' This wasn't the kit that the stunt drummer was playing. He was most definitely still there, beavering away throughout the show. Occasionally catching a carelessly flung sweaty towel or cap from Mick. I am very rarely wrong where stunt drummers are concerned."
On Tuesday night I went to see Fleetwood Mac play at the Phones 4 U (formerly MEN) Arena in Manchester. Although the band gave a fantastic performance overall, I just could not hear any of John McVie at all! To make the point, early on in the set they played The Chain, and when it came to the bass riff, there was none of that driving twang that you associate with the original recording. I could just about make out the rumble of the lower frequencies, but certainly there was a staggering lack of definition from the low mids upwards. Now part of it could be where I was sitting - in the upper circle, side-on, about half way. Another possibility was that because the sound engineer was so focussed on giving Mick Fleetwood a massive, stadium-rock drum sound, he just completely lost the bass in the mix. Did anybody else also attend this gig and have similar feelings about the bass sound? Spoiled for me what is supposed to be a great rhythmn section backbone partnership.
A friend at the recent Birmingham gig was disappointed to see a stunt drummer barely concealed on stage behind Mick. Which is a shame. Ditto not hearing JMcV.

Smallest and Grottiest Venues you've played!
toneknob replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
A Genesis tribute band I played with took up enough space in a cramped Woolwich pub to get in the way of the entrance to the ladies loo. Also, the pub's floor around their was tiled (say no more). So my part in "Apocalypse in 9/8" also featured "lifting double-neck to allow access to and exit from the khazi" and "chasing bass pedals around the floor". And yes as the evening went on the tiles got wetter (with beer that is) and of course someone went arse over tit spilling their drink everywhere. -
I'll second that .... although we got everyone except the keyboard onto the stage. The split level audience is novel as well.
We got a 5-piece band on stage at the 12 Bar, including keys. Someone took a picture looking down from the balcony, it looks like we're queueing for a bus. Same band played at the Water Rats another time. The gear storage room didn't have a ceiling at the time.
