1. I've just been leafing through my Storm/Hipgnosis book, "Walk Away Rene". What an incredible body of work, full of originality, inspiration and wit. His influence on my appreciation of the music is as significant as the musicians he created for.
2. There are clues to why Gail Ann Dorsey and guitarist Mark Plati switch instruments for ATA here http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f19/bowies-ashes-ashes-8719/ and here http://www.bowiewonderworld.com/chats/dbplati0800.htm Conclusion appears to be "we fancied a change". Brilliant song, can't get enough Bowie right now.
3.
What makes a neck 'fast'?
Guy Pratt answers the question quite succinctly in this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_3Jc54k1Es
4. And Chick Corea/Return To Forever has been as much a school of bassists as has Zawinul and Weather Report. I like the early latin-flavoured material and the Chick Corea Elektric Band. ("Space" and "Blue Miles" from "Paint The World" are in my current band's repertoire)
5. If you like Weather Report, check out later Zawinul band material like "Vienna Nights" with Linley Marthe.
6. Here's another "Who Did You Think I Was", the bass-cam extra from a DVD, I believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgFFNXahcg
7.
Of course what I meant was HERE is a link.... http://basschat.co.u...badmotorfinger/ d'oh!!!
Thanks for the link - what's an ipb file and what do I need to read it? Edit: ok it's just a pdf that needs renaming. Got it!

9.
I challenge anyone to get a groove counting 11s
Be careful what you wish for http://www.youtube.c...ZGTO9eVc#t=762s http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9-fJQvVFG4g#t=104s
10. Thanks! It sounds terrible You'd think if you're playing in 17/8 you'd go for a more distinct sound maybe?
11. If it's worth £2k, advertise at £2250, accept £2050 and ask if they want the shirt off your back as well. Depends how much you trust them and how badly you need the cash. Assuming they're both strangers I'd go for option 2.
12. I saw them on the Time Machine tour at the O2 from the second row in front of Geddy. I think that's unlikely to be topped (esp as Moving Pictures = 10/10, Clockwork Angels = 3/10 but growing) but if I find a decent ticket at face value then I'll probably go along.
Ditto. I agree that Clockwork Angels is crap, and they're probably going to do ALL of it. But they're also going to do the whole of 2112 and lots of other old stuff. And this may be the last time they tour like this. Neil Peart's apparently finding it hard to do 3-hour sets these days.
Slight spoiler (white font, highlight to read): According to www.setlist.fm, they don't do all of Clockwork, nor do they do all of 2112. And there are setlist changes every night. Spoiler ends.
13. Check your PMs for some Melvin goodies.
14. My current lot have set up a website on bandzoogle, apparently it was the best the bunch according to the guy that did it, and our collective opinion of the templates and examples. I've set up a site myself on wordpress, and it was ok - nothing as complicated as a band website though
15. My iGig's got a hanging hook. Discovered it about a year after I bought it.
16. ...as voted for by the Music Radar readership: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/the-60-greatest-bassists-of-all-time-279007/1 ...with a slightly surprising Number One. Another day another poll. The interesting stuff in these things is who makes the lower rankings.
17.
I wonder if they've seen this thread
They have
18. My latest band's name was inspired by a interior furnishings accident in a caravan park in a north Devon seaside town.
19. Bass Player magazine now have a regular "what we screwed up last time" page.
20. I am ready to maim and kill having read that talkbass post. "Please complete this transaction as you are legally obligated" aieee
21. I'm down for the Borderline gig with gig chums as well. Seen Godsticks a few times before as well, probably all at The Peel. Tried to see you at the Underworld once, but the gig time was advertised an hour late and we missed you
22.
Would be interested to find out if there are any British jazz classics from this era?
Ah, read the question Tone. Have a go with Hatfield And The North. I find (for example) Soft Machine a bit too barmy. Hatfield are post-Caravan whimsy-prog, but just onside from the madness of Soft Machine. (Having said that, SM in their very recent years before Hugh Hopper died were brilliant). Check out all four Hatfield albums - try the original Eponymous and The Rotters Club first, then more recent archive releases Hatwise Choice: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 1 and Hattitude: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 2. Here's "Going Up To People And Tinkling" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDepecCm0pw
