1. 1m26s. Camera close-up slow zoom on the touch-pad and fingers. He muffs up the timing. Always the way isn't it
2. "Muse perform Madness". Was it Baggy Trousers?
3. Cool. I'll open up the bass and see how it all looks. With the shielding paint, how do you ensure the same kind of electrical connection to earth/ground as described in the method for copper tape above?
4.
Did 3 of my basses with a 4m reel of copper tape for £6. Totally killed the hum and only took about 30 mins per guitar once I'd got the hang of it ;-) http://cgi.ebay.co.u...91#ht_981wt_922
Thanks for tips everyone. This looks like a good idea for a first step: is it just a case of coating the surfaces of internal cavities, or does the tape need to connect electrically with the pickups and controls somehow? Sorry if this is a dumb question, this is the most advanced guitar maintenance I've ever considered
5.
Not sure blend control will be any different to two volumes in terms of hum! This is a different thing really, and a fairly common mod to a jazz bass - but not to reduce hum.
Thanks for suggestions so far guys - to clarify, I meant getting the new control setup (blend/vol/tone) as well as new pickups, rather than instead of. The Bass Gallery in Camden is quoting £40 for a screening job, is this a good price?
6. Hi, I'm getting increasingly weary of the hum coming from my pickups on my Jazz bass when playing with the volume controls set to different positions. I'm considering upgrading to new pickups, preferably with master volume/blend/tone rather than front vol/back vol/tone. Any recommendations? Or should I be considering a decent shielding job instead? (again recommendations welcome) Thanks!
7. Get there early, but not too early Be nice and normal, have a laugh Casually have a bag sweets or biscuits to hand for a snack. Offer them around. Get an idea of what they're like to hang out with. Oh and play some kick ass bass. But not too kick ass.
8. Having spent many years in various Genesis tributes, I've now got a curious relationship with the band: having studied much of the music in-depth I now can't listen to it (or indeed any other Genesis tribute band) without being over-analytical about the performance. So having much affection for the 70s and early 80s output of the band, I don't really enjoy it any more. (After the B-side of "Genesis" from 1983, the rot had set in too deep (!) for me - although there are of course obvious clunkers in the pre-83 material as well) Having said that, I've loaded Trespass and Nursery Cryme on to the music machine this morning to see how I get on. Maybe time and the conveyor belt of rememberable basslines (and 12-string and bass pedal lines) have done their job.
9.
I was at the gig, awesome, Jason Bonhams drumming was something else
Me too! what a fantastic day. Bonham the only man for the job - brilliant.
10. Boo indeed! Versions on CD, DVD and BluRay or whatever the favoured AV format of the day will soon appear. "Celebration Day will then be available in multiple video and audio formats on November 19 from Swan Song/Atlantic Records. Specific product details will be announced soon" says http://www.ledzeppelin.com/news/2012/09/13/led-zeppelin-celebration-day.
11. Tickets now on sale for a cinema near you... http://www.ledzeppelin.com/news/2012/09/13/celebration-day-cinema-listings My back of an envelope sums have just revealed that this gig was more popular on an applications per ticket basis than the 2012 Olympics. Music one, sport nil! Here's the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbusDxLekPQ
12.
It's a D (7th fret on G string) with a B-flat (8th fret on D string).
Thanks! Obvious now when I have a bass ready to hand
13.
For non UK people:
Thanks for the clip! At 2m31s he's saying "Now when you get to THIS..." and was obviously going to go on to say something profound about the part significant only to us lot. Then she interrupts him with her gushing and he's suddenly on to Stravinsky. I wonder what he was going to say? ps is it a double stop at 2m27s? or is the D string not being held? Can't tell.
14. Still available! Drop me a line if you're interested.
15. If any BCers are in the vicinity, come to the Polka Tent at 8pm on Thursday and 10.45pm Saturday, where you'll find me playing with The Penny Black Remedy. See http://www.facebook.com/The.Penny.Black.Remedy and http://open.spotify.com/artist/5NUZZmJKqwuT31RaZttP03 for more. Happy weekend wherever you are!
16. I had my Jazz set up at the Gallery, for £35 the service can't be topped.
17.
Our drummer looked like Brian May and we were all Queen fans.
Who did your guitarist look like?
18. a quick look at the history books shows these as a quick sample Dire Straits, Brothers In Arms tour 1985 (John Illsley) Queen, Knebworth 1986 (John Deacon) Simple Minds Wembley Arena and Milton Keynes Bowl,1986 (Derek Forbes or John Giblin?) Sting Wembley Arena, 1987 (Tracy Wormworth) All good sterling company I'm sure you'll agree but it was seeing Peter Gabriel at Earls Court in 1987 with Tony Levin that really started the beginnings of the germ of a seed of an idea that bass playing was pretty cool. The penny dropped during "The Family And The Fishing Net".
19.
Don Jaun's Reckless Daughter... Jaco doesn't play bass on all the tracks
Good point. Hejira only has Jaco on Refuge of the Roads, Black Crow, Hejira and Coyote; other tracks with bass on (Song for Sharon, Furry Sings the Blues, Blue Motel Room) it's either Max Bennett or Chuck Domanico.
20. Thanks for asking, but I'm not looking for a trade at the moment.
21. Hello - I'm selling my Line 6 JM4 Looper. It's pretty much unused, I've had it out of the box maybe three times for at-home use only, it's not been gigged. It's solidly-built, packed with features and also has built-in play-along tracks, a multi effects unit and amp modelling. See the full spec at the Line 6 website (http://line6.com/jm4looper/) and you'll see some reviews here: http://www.homestudiocorner.com/line-6-jm4-looper-review, http://www.premiergu...per_Review.aspx, http://www.musicrada...r-178886/review. The price is £160 posted anywhere in the UK, or £150 if you want to meet up to exchange somewhere in London, or in the south-west London suburbs. Bank transfer preferred either way. Any questions, please PM me or drop me a line at [email protected]. Thanks! 22.
Presumably then on some numbers both players will be on guitar, with one of them also playing bass via these organ style pedals?
Yep! although there's also songs where there's one guitar, one bass and bass pedal parts as well. It's like singing and playing - odd to start with but you get the hang of it - says a now-retired Genesis tribute band bassist, in case my icon wasn't a giveaway
23. Here's a still from the Genesis "Live In Rome" DVD from 2007, with a slightly modded Moog Taurus I bass pedal synth. Good to see Rutherford still knows where notes C to F# and G# to C are. Good luck with your search!
