1. My Jazz hasn't got volume for each or a selector, it's master volume then a pickup pan knob, stacked bass/treble. I always prefer a single volume knob to fade my volume down on stage, I'm yet to meet a passive bass I like, every one I've had has ended up with a circuit stuffed inside!
2.
Interesting Pete, I thought tips went against the grain in the UK. Blue
If you really like something it's not unheard of here, a decent waiter/ess service and we will leave a tip for example, people might give a few quid or a pack of beers etc for the milkmam, window cleaner, bin men etc etc
3. My East circuit gives no warning at all, but I always have a spare bass at a gig and a spare battery at a practice. Everytime I've had a total failure it's been a broken wire sort of deal, active/passive being irrelevant.
4. Unless you really need to go pre EQ too, can of worms opened
5. We have actually had some cash tips this year from punters and from land lords.
6. I would like to see a picture of someone playing it, even Dood would look like Suzi Quatro with it!
7. I think they have the same problem Yamaha do, other than possibly the Attitude the model numbers could be anything to anyone other than the initiated, BBNE2 could be a £179 with a practice amp even to other bass players, I only know what one is because someone else had one, I have used a 5 string Ibanez at practice for a couple of years, I am not sure what it is ! Gibson Thunderbird, Fender Jazz, Musicman Stingray, Warwick Thumb Bass, etc etc all have a known starting point before you look into the exact model be it chinese, japanese, korean, german,US,mexican etc. An SR535 and other variations always sound more like something you'd need a motorcycle licence to use rather than a plectrum
8. I think we would have done it at the full price somehow but we won't be taken for a ride, you've taught me well blue
9. People have been buying Gibson and Ricky basses for years for big money, I've never played a good one, neck dive, thick globby finish in the joins and the legendary binding bleed. If some one has their heart set on something they will buy it regardless.
10. Saturday's gig got cancelled by us due to the tiny area they wanted us in and the pay cut to play a shorter set. NYE is a private golf club party, one set straight through for 1h 45 mins, no slow songs. Why is it cool? It's more than twice the pay we normally get
11. The reality is that after around the £400 mark the quality starts to increase in quality is very small, I've never been totally blown away by anything, just bits of wood screwed together at the end of the day. I'm surprised to hear of bad frets though, the one thing I hear all the time is how nice the post 2008 and then 2012 necks are, mine is spot on.
12. For £69 a year between upto five band members I'd rather just have a specific one, again a venue is very unlikely to take your word about house insurance and what documentation would you give the venue? Doing it properly we now have a certificate of insurance with the band name at the top and all four members named on the policy, we can log on at any time to change band members, band name or add a dep for free with our spare fifth slot.
13. The other thing is as a member of casual bar staff you are unlikely to need to bring with you things like, a stage, electrical equipment, lighting rigs temporarily set up at height, heavy speakers on stands etc.
14. I've seen some footage of Chad drumming for Baby Metal (very funny), was that for a full gig to cover man flu ridden drummer I wonder?
15. All done and joined up for the musical alliance stuff, see if we get any enquiries from it. I didn't realise until I'd paid that I could have saved one of you £15 off your policy next year for recommending them to me!
16. Lovely, fwiw I was tapping my foot more to that than the Sharay Reed clip in the other thread, which by the rules of basschat makes you a better player btw
17.
Technically a lot of Blur's 13 album is about Justine Frischmann from Elastica.
And recorded with a Stingray
18. Those five in a row Fenders are poop imo. As BRX will tell you 35" doesn't guarantee a good B string just as nor does a 34" guarantee a bad one.
19.
Surely if the venue is paying the band then they're effectively on the venue's payroll, just like the temporary bar staff? For that evening.
If I was fitting lights in a shop they would be paying me too but I wouldn't temporarily on their insurance, I'd be covered by their insurance if one of their employees knocked me off a ladder but it would be my insurance they claimed off if they tripped over my ladder.
20. And the venues where you need it are the ones that pay better ime, the band have agreed to take it from this NYE gig, so £17.50 out of each band members pay packet for one gig and it's done for the year.
21.
For a £1500 bass with a transparent finish, I would expect them to choose a bit of wood that looked good and save any like this for the solid colours.
You might want to see the new Fender prices, stick another £500 on!
22.
If the venue is paying the band then they are in the employ of the venue and are surely just as much 'staff' as the temporary bar staff? Therefore they could be covered under the venue's PLI? Last time I walked into a pub (or Tesco or a car showroom, etc) I wasn't asked to prove I was insured around their employees. It hasn't happened to us in ten years though I take your point. What would we do then? Well, if PAT was genuinely not specified as a requirement we'd just have to ask the bride and venue to sort it out. What else could we do? How proactive are we supposed to be?
If I come into your place of work to carry out a job I'll be required to be insured against my actions, that goes for Tesco or a pub if you are going in as a worker not a customer. If the venue employed you directly it would indeed be their responsibility to ensure their insurance covered having a band with a stage and loose cables etc. Coming in at the request of the bride or the venue as a sub contractor you will need your own insurance, same will go for the disco, caterers if they are bringing equipment in, bouncy castle whatever, it's all standard stuff. We had three PAT test venues and one public liability request last year but probably more like a dozen gigs that should have asked us if they were doing their job properly.
23.
Never been asked for PAT or PLI in 30 years Doubt if we'll bother really
That's fine.
