1. I'd call that working it out by ear, it's what most people do unless it becomes too tricky to work out, some people will get Dakota down in one but not much else, others can unravel a whole level 42 album no problem.
2. How long does a sample triggered by a real person need to last before we are classing it as miming? As a youngster I spent a lot of the 80s trying to work out what noise was coming from where or what the other bloke in the pet shop boys was for on shows like totp. I see a lot of these 'stars' from yesteryear performing some old classics on tv and they need six guitarists, five of them on clean sounding Fender Strats! Wtf is that about?
3. Turning up to practice once a week working out your parts as everyone else is playing then playing the same parts from memory at the gig isn't playing by ear imo. "Your on in five, I'll give you the key and just join in", that's playing by ear imo. In that situation most guitarists will tell you the key is whatever their first chord is!, tread with caution for the first verse and chorus is my rule of thumb
4. One of my 3 piece bands has a guitarist with a synth and a looper, we do Imagine and space oddity with only three people on stage.
5.
In our band, I [1] own the bits of PA that actually make the noise, the guitarist owns the rest - mixer and lots of outboard bits. SRM450s for vocal FOH and a bit of kick, Behringer D210s for vocal monitors. RCF 735s or 745s and no backline sound nice to have, but it means that someone has to find somewhere over a grand to do it. That's 20+ £50 a head gigs for me to finance them when what we've got works well. Maybe we're just so entertaining that the audience don't notice the sound deficiencies, because we haven't had any comments about poor sound quality since starting using the current setup a couple of years ago. [1] As I'm married to the vocalist and what's mine is hers, and what's hers is hers, the vocalist owns the PA.
There absolutely nothing wrong with that kit but if you were starting out with a blank canvas the cost wouldn't be that different, you'd only need to buy a pair of active subs to add to your PA to bring the cost level and the volume level but you'd have two more big boxes to store and carry for each gig. If you don't need them then it's neither here nor there anyway.
6.
I really don't agree with this. I've heard people sing Beatles tunes while strumming an acoustic guitar. No bass, no drums, no lead guitar, no three/four part vocal harmonies...
Exactly, I missed the last few posts before my last post.
7. There are people out there doing perfectly enjoyable renditions of songs on an acoustic guitar and singing along.
8.
sh*t! I didn't realise you had actually seen us So, I guess we are a bit crap anyway so why worry about the sound...............is that what you mean?
I'm yet to hear of a pub band JTUK rates around his parts, other than his own of course
9. I've got less fussy tbh, 5 string bass, decent cab and a decent head and I'd be happy enough.
10.
The same as the keys or guitarist. Ask what chord the composer is playing, or watch and listen as he/she runs through the song. If its a cover I listen to the recorded original and work it out "By ear".
I think ambient means when the audience are already there waiting, they can't sit and watch you learn each song for 15 mins before watching the whole band then play it again!
11. There's a reason I like trios and four piece bands
12.
How many hen nights would you expect the landlady to have?
Well if the whole pub went on hers including all the men by the sounds of it then they must alk be friends so every time anyone else that drinks there has an outing the whole pub will probably go again?
13. Anything electronic can fail and there's so much kit out there being used day in day out but you mainly only hear about the kit that fails on the tinternet.
14. Shame The Market Vaults in Stafford has music on every week and it's in the town centre so you can get foot fall unlike pubs like The Forresters. It's not very big at all and isnt the best payer but we've had some great nights there, I've played there with every band in Stafford over the years either in the band or as a dep I think! The Swan in Stafford is probably the best gig in town, they are outside and only during the summer but it takes some serious ass licking to get in the loop, again easiest way in is to get a dep gig there with someone else's band
15.
I did, we are a newish band trying to get onto the local circuit, so I sent out loads of emails direct or via their Facebook pages to pubs that have bands, obviously you don't know whether the pubs are going to be dedicated music pubs, or just have the occasional band until you actually get there, as it turned out, it's not the type of place we would want to play at if we had known what it was like in the first place, nice big stage though.
Could have been a good gig if it was full, they know how to party around there! Lol. The Stumble Inn in Cannock is more of a live band pub over that way, have you tried that one, nice easy lift into the stage area too.
16. They might have got a few more in if they'd updated their facebook page since september too? Pubs eh. I've put it on my avoid list and will tip off our guitarist that does the booking, we are doing a gig not far from there soon but it's a ticketed one so hopefully the punters won't all be in the Foresters instead
17. I know that pub, that was quite a trek for that type of gig, who booked it in the first place?
18. One drummer was actually called Mike too.
19.
Mine wasn't, I took it back.
Well you don't want to be strung along by an unscrupulous shop do you?
20. I'm sure my trombone playing would be much worse than your bass playing if that's any consolation?
21. Every band I've been in has had a drummer that sings either backing or lead vocals thinking about it so we've always had a Mic somewhere near the kit.
22. A lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers' blood sugar sex magik was recorded on a Wal and a Stingray 5 and I like all of that album and the bass sounds good to me, I've never made a tonal link to Status with them really.
23. Decent speakers by the looks of things.
24.
You dont say..........so thats what a PA system looks like. Who would have thought.
Some people were struggling with the description and kept saying they hadn't got room for a bigger pa even when told it was smaller, I had to resort to pictures to help out just like nursery school children have pictures in their books
25. It sounded a little bit 'boxy' to my ears, a cab used for monitoring would be better as a middy sounding one for me. If I was pushing them to gig volume I would expect to need a bigger cab anyway, of course I am not brave enough to say this in the amps and cabs section, we are a little more civilised in here as Roger's first hand experience post shows. As long as no one tells the BF massive outside of the DB section we should be OK
