1.
I have a mass of wires/cables some old solid-state (vintage if you like) Amps of various brands like H and H/Wem etc some PA cabs, old speaker cabs plus other bits i have forgotten about plus the appropriate amount of old heavy bass gear.
Have you seen Dad3353's live show!
2. Like a lot of things having more knobs is better for people who know what they are doing, for a lot of people, myself very much included it needs to be as simple as possible, thats the only reason to use an old fashioned passive desk but even I've got the hang of the xair. Being able to add in extra matched cabs hired/purchased or borrowed is still too much of a draw to a common but high end brand for me right now but you've got to start somewhere, from small acorns and all that!
3. Excellent work Sylvia The invicta59's Zeller and rig picture is actually my Gedo, the magnetic pickup is the giveaway
4. I didn't know they were active!
5. They've managed to put the silver detuner on almost a wonky as Fender have fitted the one on the G string, ah Fender build quality don't you just love it? The string lye on the E would annoy me too and I can't see putting the proper tuner on would sort that either?
6. I wouldn't want a non active pa system in this day and age, we've got an xair mixer, 2 RCF 735A speakers and two powered db monitors, that will do a typical wedding marquee if I use a large 2x12 bass cab as backline supported by the foh (no need for bins with 735 or 745 which is why they are a grand each),a beer festival or large outdoor gig we won't be doing the PA so it's out of our hands. Having a 1400 watt amp in the back of each speaker rather than dragging more gear around wins for me
7.
Oh and how about this one?
There needs to be more coloured finish Wals, one owned by someone desperate for cash to fund a drug problem or something would be ideal for me!
8. Ooh I like that a lot! It will look right and still be useable for normal gigs too, I'd rather have one of those than my normal acoustic I think!
9. I live 15 minutes away from Toft's, Helen is in charge of bass repairs there and did a nice emergency sound post replacement for me a few weeks ago.
10.
NO!!!! That's disgusting!!! You're right, of course. I guess the pros align the amplification of the bass along with the fact that there are mics on everything else. So why not amp up the bass? But, where DO you draw the line?
Oh my line went ages ago, my upright has a mag pickup and a 900 watt amp with a 2x12 cab under it
11. Well as a one trick pony Stingray player I must have only one option surely? Pick, fingers, slap, thumb, near the neck, near the bridge, palm muted, then all those with the treble up or down, not swapping and changing your gear every five minutes for the latest fad bass means you can get the tone you want without even listening to it, I know exactly how far to turn the treble pot when swapping between pick and fingers for example.
12.
That is true. Acoustic they might be, but without an amp you won't hear it across a bar. Nice gig though. Worth a watch. My personal opinion is if you're going to have to plug in, then why fool yourself that it's playing acoustic?
Where do you draw the line though? Even classical soloists use piezos or microphones then go through the PA.
13. Good stuff, fingers crossed it's a good un'
14.
Completely agree with the above. I've never owned one but all the open mics and 'jam' sessions I've been to that have had one, it's always a cheaply-built one like the Fender CB100 or Ibanez models. The sound board is (obviously!) not big enough to project properly like an upright, is made from cheap laminate wood so sounds bad acoustically and you inevitably end up plugging it in, at which the acoustic properties (if any) of the instrument goes straight out the window and you then rely on the cheap, crappy preamp which just sounds like a bad electric bass with the added hassle of feedback... I just can't see where they can be useful these days. I've played a Michael Kelly once which was beautiful and actually built from decent materials and well-constructed but again, needed plugging in. The only bass I've played that I would consider would be one of the fretless Rob Allen Deep basses. Sonically it was the only bass that offered something different in an acoustic setting that would've been worthwhile.
I forgot about the bleedin' feedback issues! I've even got a Schaller 411 mag pickup on my upright bass
15. Looks decent to me, probably a good rub with some 1200 grit sandpaper up and down the neck to take the shine off it would make it play it bit easier, looks quite glossy.
16. I rarely use mine outside of the house, it's not loud enough so you still need an amp, I bought a sunburst and rosewood Jazz bass which looks right in almost any context so I'd use than and a 1x10 cab for an 'acoustic style' gig. There's only one kind of real acoustic bass really imo
17. If I wasn't gigging I'd be doing more OM type gigs and more old car tinkering, I really struggle to play at home without a date in the diary, that said it can all get a bit much, my current band are trying to get into a sort of once evey 4 weeks situation which of course isn't happening, three weeks on the trot then nothing for ages! I'd be reducing my gear collection if I wasn't gigging much to spend the money on old car parts/tools. If/when my current bands implode I might start looking more at upright gigs but my stamina would need some work and I'm not sure what sort of gig I'd be after really, I've not been without some kind of band since around 1993 and never been to an audition as such as the gigs have just come my way over the years. A poll would be good imo, I don't think anyone needs to get upset at the OP.
18. Love it or list it
19.
I did get this Am. Std. Fretless Jazz while it's available, and also has a $200. instant rebate going.
I've got it's fretted five string twin brother
20.
Yes, if only there was a way to write it down so it could be communicated to others. Youre just going to have to imagine it, as there's no other medium via which it can be conveyed.
I'm getting hints of Megadeth with a Janis Joplin undertone?
21.
Me? I think most Fenders looks bulky and head heavy. No accounting for taste, eh?
Most Gibson basses are actually head heavy!
22.
There's a bit more going into it than that.
If only there was a recognised international set of terms or a way writing it down to describe it to us all, that would be great
23. Just done a wedding, "oh yes did you learn the first dance?" , nope, here's the chord chart then, it was an easy song tbh but it's not going to work with the 'working it out by ear method' in that situation, we didn't even sound check never mind have time to run through the song.
