I struggle to look at basses with a pick guard that looks like it's off something else, I get that that is the point. Seafoam with a musicman pickup and a black 3 ply guard made to follow the body and pickups, pop on a fifth string and that might be pretty cool!

Do you let other people play your bass(es) ?
stingrayPete1977 replied to josie's topic in General Discussion
Having so far no bass failures and a few amp ones I'd rather lend a spare bass out than the only bass amp in the venue to be honest. -
If I could play like Geoff can with the one I got for free then I'd have a bid, I suspect I'd sound much the same with it, awful.

I'd like to go to a bass bash with the people that don't allow other people to try each others gear,it would be like a weird cult! At the double bass bash I think Owen ended up with about 12 cabs and five amps gathered from around the room, much fun was had! I treat everything on it's own merits regarding sharing stuff, rarely when out on motorbikes do we end up on our own bikes all day, it's fun to see what gives you gas and what extinguishes gas! -
Do we play bass guitars the wrong way round?
stingrayPete1977 replied to northstreet's topic in General Discussion
I've just tried mine the other way around, it's really hard because my jumper keeps muting all the strings! -
You can see the enjoyment on my face as I hold onto the coffee mug to stop it rattling off the table!

Those tricky audio cabs are spot on, I really like them.

Great quality pics, I'm still amazed at how good the Yamaha sounded with a bow, I wouldn't be able to tell once mixed in with other instruments playing, fantastic.

Music shops -any wonder they're going under?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps music shops should take a lesson from the masters of retailing, Supermarkets. Just walk in, spend as long as you like looking and picking stuff up. Pay at the check-out when ready? That applies to food, clothes, TV's etc etc.
That's how musical exchanges in Birmingham was in 1990, and guess what, all those annoying kids grew up, got jobs and spent loads of cash in there just a few years later,my originals band must have spent nearly 10k in there over a few years. -
City folk think anywhere that the tube doesn't go to is remote, how many threads do we see where buyers are willing to spend £2500 on a bass or amp but won't spend £40 on fuel to drive to bass direct or similar to try it and collect it yet happy to take a chance on internet reviews.

I was once told "your playing is beyond description", with hindsight I suspect this was not a compliment

If you were going to buy a P bass, what model would you get?
stingrayPete1977 replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
Nothing made by Yamaha has broken ever, that is an actual fact -

I like mine with a MM pickup and an active preamp, everything else I like about normal Fender ones. -

There was a radio programme on today on radio 4 that sounded interesting regarding this, apparently sinister is latin for left handed! They said no one is truly ambidextrous, people call themselves that if they do some things one way and other tasks the other rather than all tasks with either equally well. -

Yep great day again folks, thanks I haven't decided what I'm gassing for yet, MAS45 cab or two to upset TheRev, a Fearless cab from Guy at Tricky Audio with a super sparkle finish, a 5 string upright, a Yamaha Silent bass, an EA amp, Geoff's ability, a full circle and one of many fancy preamps?

We were probably a bit far away anyway in Mere Green near Sutton Coldfield, but I had to come back home via Lichfield and I'd actually been to Burton to do my proper job all day yesterday so I might be a bit tired today! Right I'm setting off!

Cool have a safe trip :-) I'm having an after gig mcfilth not far that from Bluejay's b&b, I bet she is tucked up in the warm rather than sitting in a cold van eating questionable burgers? Lol. See you all tomorrow!

Why did you choose your luthier?
stingrayPete1977 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
I had to read that twice. I was wondering why you were going to a lazy luthier!
Haha,no she isn't lazy at all I took the bass in without a appointment after finding what could have been a serious problem and she had it sorted for me to collect the following Saturday. Very good service from Helen at Tim Toft violins, credit where it's due -
OWWWWWWwwww go on then, It's just so adorable, i can't help showing it off I think this is one of only a couple of E series in the uk, some info on the early L2000E you might find interesting, Some of this I have not put in the comparison between this and a sabre. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190734-79-sabre-v-81-gl-2000e-not-very-distant-brothers/ 1) The fingerboard on the Early L2000E and some early L2000 is unstained Ebony not rosewood. 2) Leo curved the finger board bottom like he did on the early fender basses see pic. 3) The L2000E had a skunk stripe down the back of the neck on both maple and ebony boards. 4) Leo also went back to the 3 screw tilt neck, From L2000E and then on to the L2000 5) Slot pole pieces, When you move these 90 Deg slot inline with string or across, it sounds different, slightly. 6) The L2000E and for the first year had "Schaller" stamped tuners, with the norm alloy tuning heads to cut down weight. 7) Like the early Musicmans Leo started the serial numbers off from B00... 8) Series 1 pre amps together with the early slot pickups on the early L2000E the OP is huge so were tamed down as were too powerful i think the transients from the pups were too much and were blowing chips, anyone with info on this ? EDIT..... just found this from a post basses from Leo forum... explains "8" a bit better... "The first E's had a preamp that did not allow the treble knob to function when the bridge pup is solo'ed. This was due to the early E preamps' chip not being able to handle the hard transients generated by the MFD's. The second generation E preamp was slightly tweaked with capacitors, and allowed the treble control to function in all positions, including the bridge pup solo'ed. E's and later L2000's all used the same preamp from early 1982 to 1992. Sound differences? Second-gen preamps sound clean and deep, adding big lows and highs that are not harsh or tinny. The bottom end on first-gen preamps can knock down buildings. Nothing sounds as mammoth as a first-gen E in OMG mode, and add in slot pole pickups, you can adversely affect the sperm count of the first 20 rows" Thanks El tookay. I do wonder why he went three bolt though it was never great all THREE times he tried it!

Why did you choose your luthier?
stingrayPete1977 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
It wasn't actually meant to be that incendiary ... I am genuinely asking if a one person operation, ie. a luthier, really does produce a better product than one that has the backing of a considerable R&D budget and state of the art production facilities. As for my analogy of cars ... a lot of people love and enthuse about British sports cars, they are undoubtedly things of great beauty, but if I was going on a 1000+ mile trip across Europe I'd rather take a VW Golf.
Ultimately they are just lumps of wood bolted together with mainly generic hardware screwed on, the guy with his name on the headstock is likely to spend more time and effort getting it right than a Cort factory worker working to feed his family in korea. The best bet is a sort of mass produced custom imo, if the luthier builds a random bass with funny pickup spacing and crap hardware because it's what the customer wants it will be crap but a luthier that has a sort of base model design that the customer works around then everyone wins and the builder has done things like the body cut, neck pocket and headstock/tuner layout many times.
