1.
Ah, yes. Whatever happened to Rolf Harris? You don't see much of him on TV now, do you?
Ah good old Rolf, he's residing very near to me actually!
2.
There was no rock band more relevant than The Beatles. Blue
3. I sold all my keepers when I decided I'll never go back to 4 strings, I've replaced them all with the 5 string version as close as possible.
4.
I think the CS is a distinctly average build. The only thing that perpetuates the whole deal, IMO, is the F on the headstock. People say the 2012 builds upped their game across the board..?? but I just don't think Fender are that interested or committed to that goal, they just want to do enough to continue selling. The really discerning buyer knows there is much better value elsewhere... For example, a Sei J5 would wipe the floor in every respect of a CS, a good few times over but their new prices are comparable. One is a hand made bespoke instrument and the other is a bitsa from other ranges in the brand... namely the American Deluxe. IMHO, of course. The Am Deluxe is discontinued and is replaced by what... a new name and promo campaign..??
A lot of buyers have one eye on resale (not me actually) and anything other than one with the big F on it just doesn't hold it's value the same, we have pages of basses in the for sale section that cost £2500-3500 to have built for sale often for months for £1000-1500. Also the buyers are often 50+ guys that are treating themselves to a bass/guitar they lusted after when younger, the people researching xotic, sei, Roscoe, GB etc etc are in the minority compared to buyers of instruments with an F on purchased and never gigged.
5. I went for a standard US Jazz a couple of years ago even though the wife had given me the go ahead to spend more, maybe even a grand more!, but part of me just wanted a proper US Jazz, not a Deluxe, not a Mex, not a Squier, not a CS, just a proper Jazz and to me those are made in the US of A.
6.
Yes, but some kids don't know who Hitler was, or Churchill, or can even name the current prime minister, er... old what's-er-name. I think it was George Santayana who said, 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it'. Which is why every generation makes the same mistakes.
I think there are too many "famous" people now, far more outlets and reality tv etc, being limited to four tv channels as a kid , three until I was 6 years old meant it was easier to know all the celebs of the time.
7. As time goes by they will become less and less well known, none of the young people I work with could name all of the Beatles, some of them couldn't name one or tell you a song they did. I know there's always "my neice is 11 and loves them" etc, it's a fraction of the under 20s that feel that way.
8. I still like US models from all the big players, call me a snob but still feel short changed paying USA money for basses built elsewhere.
9. I think the plat pro works well with the mag pickup, I have the Schaller 411 on my bass, I set the plat pro to the suggested settings for arco/pizz in the handbook and it does give it a bit more of a double bass sound as it probably cuts some electric bass sounds out rather than trying to emulate a double bass if you get my drift? I started trying to mix and match with a KK actually but it was a faff and I was still feedback prone, after a while I just enjoyed playing rather than faffing and so did the audience so that's where I am, if anything I'd like to see what better mag pickups sound like more than play around with more piezos. The Krivo looks ideal.
10.
I've got their Blue album.
Lol
11. How small is the duo preamp? Could you fit it all behind the finger board with a wireless pack, just drop the piezo wires inside and back out behind the finger board right at the top. Flick the switch and rock away!
12. What about a wireless system? I run a single mag pickup and I'm thinking of some kind of Velcro system to attach the wireless pack to the rear of the finger board, volume knob and the ability to mute it when I'm on the electric bass and the receiver wired into my plat pro eq that I've already velcroed to the top of my amp, I use a dual channel amp with the clean one setup for the double bass and the valve channel setup for electric bass, the plat pro is in the fx loop of the clean channel.
13. You had to be there apparently or something like that......
14.
If you are coming to the DB bash then I will put it in the car. Tell me if you are.
Same here, I wont bring the eub unless anyone wants to try it specifically
15.
What mod did that require? And how long do you think the spirocore's will sound good for before they'll need changing? Although my issues with the Stagg aren't so much the tone but with the playability - I don't like the hip brace position, and I feel it's not helping me develop a good technique - and the build quality. There's lot of extraneous noise - it's not noticeable live, but in the studio the rattles & creaks seem to come out with a vengeance Our recording engineer hates it!. Now I've had it a few years the lacquer on the fretboard is starting to wear and the wood is showing through. The turning head on one of the machine heads dropped off the recently - it will just push back on, so no immediate problem, but generally I feel It's just getting a bit 'tired', so it may be time for a change.
I had to countersink the ball ends into the wooden block tail piece and unwrap a tiny bit of the silk on two strings I think where they go over the nut, they should last a decade possibly longer as I never play the Stagg at home anymore and mainly use my upright for gigs if there is room on stage. The endpin rattle can be solved by wrapping some tape around it inside the cavity, do you also have a chunk of foam under the strings below the bridge?
16. My most 'bottom endy' bass I've ever owned was an SGC nanyo 320, it weighed less than a packet of crisps and the neck was like a match stick, fantastic bass.
17. I've modded my Stagg to take regular 3/4 strings and it's now strung with Spirocore weichs which cost half what I paid for the Stagg, lol. Feels nice now though.
18. A band or group is often formed on it's strengths of the collective group, our guitarist is good at getting the gigs in, I've got a good PA and a van and I try my best, the singer can sing well and looks the part for functions and weddings, the drummer has a truck and can play drums well, the collective group makes for a viable active band, once you remove an element the group is weakened massively, how you get a full setup doesn't matter to me as long as it works well for everyone involved. My previous band had a nice EV PA system, I joined after the purchase so took no share in it after the band's demise, I did however pay my share for running repairs during my 6 years out gigging with them.
19.
Bass player with Elvis Costello & The Attractions.
That's cool, but only as nerdy bass players, big money is only added once collectors from more than one buying group have an interest. Nice little addition rather than a value adding name imo.
20.
I bought a '63 P Bass some years ago which I bought because it played and sounded fantastic. It was only after I'd bought it that I enquiried into whether there was any interesting history and was told the previous owner was Bruce Thomas. It would've been nice to have some paperwork to verify that, but that in itself wouldn't have made me buy it over another, superior instrument. So my answer to the poll must be, no.
Wow no way?! Never heard of him, that's the problem with 'famous' owned items I'd only be interested in provenance if it was something I was already buying as security that I hadn't bought a lemon.
21. The owner of the PA should be whoever paid for it, no more no less.
22. Which we know and afaik no one disagrees with? Even two maple necks the same cut I the same cnc machine would have differences, changing necks totally would no doubt change things. The only way I could see this bring proven would be to rig up done kind of computer driven playing device with the bass clamped in ay a set nm torque then shave the neck without removing the neck or strings then retest it, maybe even shave the neck with the bass clamped in place. The results would be of no interest and totally pointless after so I'm struggling to think of a university or lab that would take the task on!
