1. There's some fantastic petite female double bassists, when in thumb position your thumb doesn't go behind the neck at all unless it's about 3 foot long! I started on upright because I couldn't bend my wrist to play horizontal, I now play with a electric bass held sort of diagonal and use the three finger technique from the double bass, a dogs breakfast but I'm still gigging!
2.
Not hardly. My excuse is severe arthritis in both hands which limits my playing massively even on a 4 string. Plenty of other reasons for not being able to get around on the average five. How are you on upright bass, for example?
As someone that had their left hand bolted back on with a titanium plate, plays five strings and upright bass I can tell you that with the correct technique anyone that can play a four string could do five strings, if anything I play with a more open hand on a five string even though I do still grab the neck far to hard, my classic 5 Stingray nut width can't be more more if at all that some P basses either. I've seen many people swap to five strings BECAUSE of their arthritis to use the playing across the board technique to make it easier on their hands, fingers and arms.
3. I've never understood the need to add the "in my opinion" to posts you make, the fact you are making the post and the members name on the left tells us it's their opinion?
4.
Phwoar. If only that was a 5 string, I'd be all over it!
Yep
5. If I won the lottery I'd have a thunderbird, it would be mounted on the lounge wall next to a Ricky, neither would be played but they'd look awesome!
6. It's all nonsense to imply they are doing something different imo? Metal is enough of a prefix to give a clue to those who may be interested, after that the listener can judge it on it's own merits surely. Kids eh,lol.
7. I had the single one, gave up on piezo and now rock a mag pickup only
8. Excellent, welcome to the club!
9. Math metal? Tech metal? Why do things need such specific labels!
10. you say bought?
11. If he waits for 1994 to come around again he might actually get what he wants for it
12. I use a stand to hold the big Galaxy tablet that controls the digital mixer but I put it sideways at the rear of the stage near my amp, does this count or does it need to be in front of me and does it need to have dots on it before people can 'quite rightly' walk out of the gig before the first note is played?
13.
can't argue with that, another reason to learn the songs, and wear sunglasses, they're never quite sure where you're looking
14. I spend the night looking down bridesmaids cleavages.
15. Dookie era Greenday, sounds great but I'm not sure it would work for me in my function set.
16. I once played a 70's Jazz that was just shy of 16lbs , try before you buy and all that! I also gigged a Ricky for a bit on loan, that was the lightest bass I have ever known but it wanted to tip up all night giving me wrist ache in my left wrist from holding it up all the time even when I just wanted a swig of my drink or what not!
17.
Classical musicians. Lots of stuff to play. No way they can remember it all ... meh. Perhaps if, like Andre Rieu or Nigel Kennedy or Nicola Benedetti, they bothered to learn the 200-year old tunes ... they might make a few quid out of actually entertaining people instead of sitting around in a semi-circle peering at sheets of music and flipping pages with strange foot pedal gizmos.
TBF the original post was guitar bands but that has never stopped Basschat getting in a twist!
18. I have done the opposite, spent loads on everything and I still sound crap!
19. Anyone using a P bass, love the sound of them as long as I'm not the one creating it!
20. Personally I'd go for either a Gedo or a Thomann one, there are good G4M ones but they are rarer from what I've seen and tend to need work where the others are normally at least playable if not better out of the box. A good used is the best bet but they don't come up that often ime.
21. Do you get extra points if it was a free gig? I've played the Stafford Festival in the castle grounds, couple of thousand I'd guess, depends on the weather! All for nowt If we can work on people per square foot The Swan beer garden in the summer is ridiculous, I went to the loo in the break and couldn't get back to the stage
22. I've played to thousands of people, only about 15-50 at a time though!
23. I can barely remember anything as a four year old, possibly Shakin' Stevens being my first musical memory.
24. Yep really
25. People are funny with gigs, if you can sell them a ticket a few weeks before for £2 they'll travel half way around the world instead of losing that £2!
