Astounding bass playing from Jaco.
It's a fair point and most people don't like technical playing. I don't a lot of the time. But i also feel it's ignorant to not like something just because its's technical or musical. It always depends on the requirements of the music. Even The Stranglers have shredding on No more heroes for example. I also dislike the idea stuff has to be simple to be real and worthwhile, the Indie/punk mentality. I really like Indie/punk. I like most forms of music, even bloody Country now which i used to hate.
This always gets thrown back worded in a similar way (normally by blue ),the old "if you dont like Jaco you are probably crap at playing and only like rock music in straight 8ths" kind of response, for me it's not that I don't like technical playing, I don't like Jaco's technical playing!! -
I don't want to force an opinion. But to listen to this bass from Jaco Pastorius and not get something from it is just alien to me. Each to there own of course.
Im sure there are many basslines you like that I don't and basslines I like that you don't, I wouldn't find it alien for you not to like everything I do. Just tastes aren't they? -
I wonder if it would suck if the bass line was soloed. ?
For me, I think so still. -
PA wattage - what to choose? And what do you use?
The rule of thumb used to be 2W to each person in the audience. Rule of thumbs are interesting things. As mentioned above it's SPL but most modern speakers are fairly efficient now and pretty much of a muchness. The problem with owning your own PA is you need to get a good all rounder for different situations and you need somewhere to store it all. The problem with hiring is arranging to borrow each time, collecting and dropping off. It's a trade off.
I agree with all of this, our guitarist wasted money on PAs for small events etc, the money he spent on a HK audio sub and satellite speaker thing would have bought us a pair of DB Opera 12s instead of 10s. Digital desk and powered speakers makes a very small dent in the storage area compared to an old fashioned setup and any money spent on a small old fashioned one could go towards a proper PA, If you bought a pair of Opera 12s now as FOH they would do most of the gigs in the poll right away within budget, add a pair of RCF 745s at a grand each in future and you have a great PA with nice powered monitors! -

Our RCF stuff is so portable yet powerful that it can be used for a duo jam session in the pub up to small wedding and function band gigs. A pair of RCF 735As for FOH (these act as subs also if you are not familiar with them) A pair of DB Opera 10s as monitors A single DB opera 12 as a drum monitor (being added soon) The DB 10s would do a jam night or a gig with backline on there own so that gives a very compact option, the 735s added does anything I would do before getting someone in to provide a PA. -
yep they do. I love it. But it was more about the bass playing around the music. I guess that point was lost..
As I said I appreciate the skill required but it makes no difference how good the bassline is if the overall content sucks, for me it sucks, sucks is thankfully subjective and has nothing to do with "being there" it would still have sucked for me in 1985 -

He is a great player that we do not hear much about on this site? I wonder if the complications of the band with him coming and going (I did not realise he had left again until just now) has held him back as a known player in some ways? I nice example of his work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3Rdc7T98xM He can rock and slap and do gospel stuff, pop and funky, versatile player.

Does nothing for me, sounds like a cheap game show theme tune from the same year I appreciate the skill but I wouldn't want to listen to any more of it. -
Surely, anyone who gets a 500 quid bass as a present and then sells it because they don't "want" it, is just an ungrateful bastard
Me and ebs_freak collected my USA strat from a kid in Surrey, his uncle bought it for him in 1997 over ten years before I purchased it from him, we worked it out the kid must have been 6 or 7 years old at most and couldn't play a note! It was dusty with a few scuffs but the frets and pickups were as new, never been played.

You forgot 9/11 and the moon landings!
-
You can try my Gedo out in silence while I check out the preamps and wireless system
-
I think this is the problem with talking online, it's easy to get the wrong end of the stick, you should come along too the bash and eat sandwiches, drink coffee and look at bass stuff
-
I've no idea how we got here, shame.
And frankly why not, I'd be happy anyone else to do the same? Also, I've three DBs and a very interesting EUB, plus about 15 pre-amps I could have brought for others to try, adding to the whole thing. I don't see why my reasons for attending are somehow flawed because they're not yours?
I'm not saying you need to chat for hours in minute detail, but I think at least an exchange of friendliness would be polite before grabbing an expensive bass before playing it. I find this whole situation strange right from your first arsey post I've quoted and quoted from already, why do you feel so special that you needed to be privately consulted about this bash? It's been in the db section for ages as an open discussion regarding plans different to last time before dates were confirmed. Telling us what you would of brought with you is frankly, childish.
And I've lost my key ...
At least you were given one!
-
I've got some bows you can try Bluejay, German wooden one and a carbon French, I'll bring them both.
My opening point was simply honest, and probably said out loud what a lot of people were thinking Pete. Re nice to see a few more people, yes, 6 is not going to make en event is it? Perhaps the organisers need to speak to Nik (silverfoxnik) about how to do these things properly, for example polite PMs to members asking if they'd like to attend, asking what they'd like to see/do/hear on the day, and whether they'd like to take an active role? If I were organising this DB event the very least I'd have done would be to PM all the likely suspects, and given that neither myself or a couple of other who should be on the list didn't receive one, I assume that didn't happen?
There was another thread started ages ago where all of your points were raised and an open invitation to anyone offering suitable services was made, suggestions of a luthier giving basic services on site were made for example, I didn't realise there was an inner sanctum that needed private consultation regarding a bash? You've already said you don't want to talk about preamps or anything else for that matter so what are you proposing, walk around in silence trying each others basses then leave? Lol
-
I'd love to come to this, but frankly I don't want to spend 8-hours in the car to talk pre-amps or anything else for that matter, we can talk about gear on BC. If I was going to drive that far I'd want to do one thing and one thing only, play lot of different DBs. I'd happily bring my three up if it felt like it was worth the journey?
I can see your point Chris but perhaps the tone of your opening gambit was a little harsh? There was plenty of unamplified playing last time and even as an electric bass player mainly I'm happy to have a no electric basses rule, as soon as the Status Mark king crew arrive my ear plugs go in! It would be nice to see a few more names on the list and a few more basses that I agree with, I'd like to see more people who want an introduction to upright to come along too.
-
It was NOTHING like a regular electric bass bash last time, I played every bass there if anyone can find the picture of the group shot you will see how many basses there were, more than anywhere I've visited so far that's for sure.

Motorhead, too soon?

I fitted a frequency inverter a couple of years ago, it is a massive battery that charges at 50hz then discharges at 60hz, works just like the bath idea but as you say you cant run it forever.
What Pete isn't telling you is that they keep their feet warm on the windings of the said extension lead.
Well the only other way to keep warm is to do some work, we can't have that can we?!
-
I concur with all these [s]old folks[/s] seniors (well, I would, wouldn't I..?), although, here in [s]the real world[/s] Europe, there are no fuses in these leads, so it's all a bit dumb as a debating subject, really. The leads don't often explode or catch fire over here; I must have handled thousands of 'em over the decades. Ne'er a jot of trouble with 'em regarding fuses.
The general feeling in the UK is that we use fused plugs due to our love of the '30 amp ring main' where a 16 amp radial circuit is more common in mainland Europe, in reality a 16 amp MCB in the consumer unit would trip far sooner than a 13 amp fuse in a plugtop would blow. I've been on building sites where they have a cement mixer, radio, kettle, sandwich toaster and a nest of battery chargers all on at the same time all on a 25 metre ext reel!
