1. Really?, I love it! Lol It wouldn't have put me off without it though in fairness
2. The ebay link is the right ones, mine is a standard French model, I think Jake went for the fancy weave version. The cheap wooden ones like the Antoni aren't much use from what others have said.
3. You want a 3/4 bow for a 3/4 bass but I see no reason why a longer bow would hurt, nothing size wise is set in stone with DB afaik?
4. Quite a few people have the Yita music ones off ebay on here now, I got mine as a recommendation from others on here, Jake Newman tried mine at my first lesson and he promptly bought himself one so they can't be too bad unlike my playing with it! I asked the same question about French or German and the advice was "what does your teacher use?", I find the German one easier to start with (a cheap wooden one that came with my bass) but the French one nicer after I have settled in a bit, the German one is easy to slip into sawing the strings off mode IME. So a vote for a carbon Yita from me and you might get a few others saying the same or at least agreeing to go for carbon unless you are spending a grand or more!
5. Asbestos blanket will give the Ashdown signature tone yet act as a fire safety device then.
6. Just throw an old jumper over your laptop, job done complete with fire hazard?
7. I can hear the BF massive coming!.........Lol
8.
I've had just the opposite run with recent Fender Am. Std. Jazzes, and Precisions. The QC is very good, the sounds are good also. Very well balanced, and hold their intonation solidly. I can't ask for more from a production line bass.
Same here, I love mine, it is just a proper bit of kit and one I dont mind using in anger, I hope in years to come it will tell a tale of my gigging life. I can see my Jazz as a keeper, 5 strings, 3tsb, tort and well made, it would lose a lot if I sold it and I would only want another later as it fits the bill in every band situation so I can see other basses rotating around the Jazz. Classic US made bass with a Spaghetti Fender logo, what is not to like?
9. The problem with moving the anchor block up is that you would need to remove a lump of body and also the angle from bridge to block might become quite sharp? A new block made to fit over the step and keep the angle the same would be best, a block of maple painted black would be perfect. I just countersunk the existing holes and left about 10mm of wood from the ball end to the face of the block, no cracks yet. I had to peel a bit of the top silk back then clear nail varnished them as I'd made a mess taking them on and off etc, no problems now though and lovely Spiros instead of the stagg ones.
10. I like it, I prefer the dots on that to the fancy ones on the fretless as they just confuse me! I bet my bowing would sound better with frets
11. And mine is my lightest five string bass so what do you know?
12.
You all stole the good jokes
Yes they must be a bunch of arseholes
13. Argh I wanted pics! Good enough excuse to repeat the DB bash alone I'd say Owen?
14. I wish them all the best but it looks like very early days, funk 5 in sparkle silver if the numbers come up to help them on their way
15. Mine catches a bit but nothing worth worrying about, its the only jewellery I wear.
16. Thanks Geoff, sounds like I need to work on my ability to get the note started more than anything then. I'll watch new video later, I've not been brave enough to swap any strings on the Gedo yet just the stagg and that turned into a nightmare, lol. Bow dodger, brilliant
17.
Chill Mark, unlike Littlewing, some of us read your original post properly.
+1
18. Ha no problem, Gedo are great to deal with and nicely shipped. They will alter the standard specs to suit you, I added Spirocore weich strings and an adjustable bridge to the model they had listed, I took a bit more off the bridge and had to fiddle about a bit to get it where I was happy but nothing too tricky, strings were pre fitted, sound post stayed in place etc. If I had took it straight to Tofts or similar I bet it could be even better, I wanted one I could grow into rather than need to sell if I liked it and so far so good, the solid top, ebony board and adjustable bridge mean it can be setup at a later date including a board shoot but as Geoff likes it and Jake sees no reason to mess I haven't Good luck with the house sale, and feel free to come and see mine some time to get an idea of what the fit and finish is like etc, just drop me a pm.
19.
The Lakland and the G&L both sound superb! Contenders, for sure!
I'd happily play either for the rest of my days
20. You'd only get as far as the bottom of the stairs if I was playing DB with a bow unless you like cats fighting!
21. G and L is a good shout, also what money do used Lakland 55-01 fetch?
