1.
I'm surprised the Stingray seems to be thought of as his iconic instrument, he didn't use it that much.
This is apparently 1976 (confirming his Ray to be worth a few quid regardless of who owned it) http://youtu.be/dQ9J8zgFMhU Here he is in 1981 Great version and Freddie's shorts well what can you say, Lol http://youtu.be/9E-WasNzVpI 1985 http://youtu.be/sXRsjTuBxMM He used it both live and in the studio for various things between those dates at least so that is 9 + years and 5 or 6 Albums depending if he used it on Hot Space? including two number 1 albums and all Gold or Platinum/ double Platinum. No hardly used it did he
2. More than some bands would in a whole career though, they just happened to have a good long career! Plus he used it on all their best tunes.
3. Jack socket connections dirty or not springing down hard onto the instrument cable plug, bad earth connection, loose connection on the PCB, dodgy pot (we've all had some!) Or a good old fashioned batt flattery!
4.
if I didn't have to carry it... I'd use 8x10s every time!
I'd say most bands in that situation are using in ears for the full band, nothing but stage dressing, that said so would I
5. Im not sure I'd call a 2x12 a mini rig? Looking at the absolute max outputs possible is pointless imo, I never need to run mine at full tilt so as long as there is spare head room and a tone you like I wouldn't get hung up on cone sizes unless its got a flake and raspberry sauce on top.
6. Oh and celebrity chef endorsed rolling pins have been purchased for many years!
7.
I wonder if the same people would buy Gordon Ramseys old rolling pin ? That pie must have been so good because he had a magic rolling pin / It's an instrument, the talent i yer. If buying expensive basses made you good I would be the best there is,,,
Stingray collectors would want it for being potentially a first year production run stingray, 1976 rays don't come up very often throw in a worldwide hit written and recorded with it and in fairness surely it's THE stingray to own? People lap up anything Adam Clayton puts his squiggle on regardless of how little he uses a similar model for so to own the actual bass makes more sense to me, as for playing and the tone of it it's unlikely any of these basses get played ever again
8. Calling mcnach! http://elblogdequeen.com/2012/12/las-cuatro-cuerdas-de-deacon.html
9. Yes but you are comparing good 4x10s (pairs of 2x10s) to my good 2x12, something that is ok but at the cheaper end of the 2x10 market wont match a top end 2x12.
10.
Just the one blue bass.....everything else is black in my camp.
I really like that but lets not tell everyone, I have a reputation to keep up
11.
It's not just cone surface, it's how much air they can displace. There are 2x12 cabs that move more air than the majority of current 410s.
My 2x12 can see off many 4x10s especially older designs, a good 2x12 or pair of 12s should be a match for most 4x10s ime.
12. I wonder if he had more than one Ray? There are clips with him using one with a white plate and a black plate but both tobacco burst so could be the same one. He was one of the first high profile players to use one, I've seen clips from January 77 with him using one.
13. Very sad although I stupidly thought he was already dead! Always sad so close to christmas for the deceased's friends and family too for famous people or regular folk alike.
14. I do what I can, it comes fairly easy to me, a gift you could say?
15. I still think it would be the Ray that the collectors would want, people who pay silly money for stuff want to impress people that don't much so regarding JD I think the ultimate would be "that's the bass that was used to write and record 'Another One Bites The Dust' on". That would be the song American collectors would most associate John Deacon with, it was used on big US tours and other hits too.
16. I try to be the same online as I am in real life, a total w***er, I'm achieving my goal quite well so far
17. That just leaves the HS Stingray then the Lakland is of course an inch longer scale too so the so called sweet spot would be slightly out no matter where you put it.
18.
I also remember reading an interview where he was asked what bass he played, and in a rhetorical gesture shrugged and asked the tech, who informed him that it was a Stingray. He went on to state that to a bassist, the choice of bass was no more important than the choice of pen is to an author. I was a bit outraged at this at the time, but am coming round to that viewpoint more and more.
Part of their image was to be too cool for school, at the same time Damon Allbran was collecting antique harpsichords and stuff so I'd take that with a pinch of salt, on the other hand I think he sounds the same to some extent on any bass, Jazz bass in the very early clips, P bass, Stingray and he even sounds the same in some clips with him on electric upright bass! Its that plucky right hand technique imo, works just right for the band.
19.
Looking at the Sandberg and the 'ray in you profile picture, it looks like the Sandberg MM is closer to the bridge isn't it?
I think most (all but the legendary Pingray) have the P in the P spot and then move the MM back, I guess that makes it lose a bit of the Ray bottom end power? Other basses with the MM in the right place have the P nearer the neck which I presume goes against what P lover love about the P, worst of both worlds IMO, I was hugely underwhelmed by the Sandberg's version off a Stingray even though it was a nice bass in everyway. MM in the right place with a single coil in the neck position surely equals either a HS Stingray or a Lakland 55-02, 55-14, 55-94 depending on pocket depth!
20. For you then 40hz http://youtu.be/SfUJrueI7e0
21. I heard Stereotypes on the radio the other day and thought how it was weird that he does not get much of mention on here? Being Basschat its only a matter of time before the debate starts, Lol
22. I never see much love for Alex James on this site, maybe we should correct that? He does appear to take more drugs when he uses a Stingray for some reason but lets gloss over that Anyone else a fan?
23. The P has to be 'flipped' the wrong way to get the MM in the sweet spot doesnt it?
24.
I'm definitely going to do that at our next gig. A black folder with an art magazine. Just in view of the drummer. Can't wait to see his face when we start the first number and I open the folder. Closely followed by the rest of the band when they wonder why he has fallen off his stool. .
"Chicks with Sticks" drumming nudey girls magazine should do the trick!
