1.
Accept your point Pete and can imagine how awkward a blown amp could be, is it really insurmountable ? I'd just chuck the bass through my monitor and struggle for the night. Anyway, taking a spare bass, as in the original post, isn't going to dig you out of a blown up amp.
When using a big pa on a big stage plus whatever your amp was chucking out foh it can take a bit of messing to get you in the monitor enough for yourself without annoying everyone else, on the other hand the band still needs to hear you too, I've been in the situation on another occasion (ashdown again, lol) and we had it sorted and sounding great on stage, best I had sounded and played for ages only to realise in the break that I wasn't coming out of the main pa as it was muted! Our resident heros will say that is a massive fail and why wasn't my personal bass tech on hand etc in reality under the pressure of the moment, the singer/guitarist being in charge of the pa not out front like a soundcheck, me day dreaming about how big my credit card bill will be once Mark at bass direct has taken payment for a new amp so I can get shut of the ashdown etc etc etc it was an easy mistake.
 2. Down the pub I could easily rig something up with the gear we use, my behringer bdi21 would be fine, just move the di cable from the faulty head to the di box and I'd be away, with the function band its not so easy so I sit the genz 3.0 on top of my big Genz head, I have a bit of a complex setup but I could ditch that in an emergency so its just one speakon, a power lead, an xlr from the di, and the input from my bass.
 3.
Yeah. I did test couple of these before, but haven't played the one i bought ... so guess there's a risk there, yes. Not sure what you refer to when you say 'thrown together' ...
Dont feed the troll
 4.
Some of you guys must be doing some great gigs if you feel the need to take spares of things like amps. If disaster eventually befalls me at the Dog and Duck, then it would be once in 30 odd years of gigging. I'll run the gauntlet with those odds. Les
I've stood looking at my blown Ashdown along with all the guests at a fancy wedding mate, it wasn't a nice experience nor was trying to rig up a temporary di box and re jig the fold back mid gig whilst they all stood around, class D head not much bigger than a vhs tape in my gig bag from then on thank you. I dont take it to the pub unless its a big pub as the pressure isnt on and the pa is much simpler than the big EV in the other band.
 5. Ive never used a stand on stage but I have been known to gig with an erection
 6.
And quickly as well. Very easy to get a workable sound with a P-Bass.
Unless you are me in the same way I know you are with the MM!
 7.
Rockabilly?

Classical music? lol
I was kind of thinking genres where other brands of bass would be used but I'll let you both off
 8.
It were a joke, if a flimsy one... COAT ON AND AWAY WE GO
ha oh right,
 9.
My question is this: Should a more professional player who in essence doesn't need a music stand still carry a music stand with him or her, because they are more professional and it would be unprofessional to need one on occasion and not to have one?
Dont forget the spare one too.
 10.
Well, they all sound pretty flimsy excuses to me
If I offered you a gig for thursday night, 35 songs, 15 you know, 10 you have heard before, 10 are totally new to you and half of the set is in a different key to the record could you do it without any notes at all? Good on you if you can but some people think its ok to take 6 months to learn 20 songs to start a band up with a weekly practice and even then might use notes so I just dont see the problem. Fwiw my own stand has never left the house.
 11.
Why are function bands let off the hook?
Its likely that a pro function band will have more deps both more often and more of them at once, a band gigging all year round maybe 3 times a week will have people off sick, maternity leave, holidays, work with other bands etc just like us weekend warriors do with our regular jobs, I dont need a set of instructions for my day job but someone bought in to cover my job would for some parts of it, a dep glued to a chart for Mustang Sally might not be the go to guy I agree. The other thing is the fact they are more likely to be playing up to date music almost as quick as it hits the charts (excuse the pun) , or themed music or requested music for first dances etc which are often not known songs worth learning for the regular set. I'm sure there are other good reasons I've missed?
 12. Trouble is its another person that needs to be free for the gig dates, even a trio can be an arse finding dates we can all do. Good used gear bought between the band is the best way imo, hire a cheap community centre for a 4 or 5 hour session purely to learn how it all works and make it clear that is the purpose of the practice not 4 hours of playing with every knob on the guitarist multi fx unit! You could even pay someone or get a fellow basschatter to come and help explain it all, colour code all the leads and make an idiots guide and laminate it, keep it all in a tidy box etc. Every band has a limit where outside help is required, knowing the venues and what will be needed is a must imo, no point hiring a sound crew only to realise your pa would have been fine or turning up to a huge venue with your passive 12s because the drummer said "its not that big from what I remember" lol. We hire a big bass bin and an amp/crossover unit from our local place if we think we need it, he charges us £20 a go. I already had a Mackie profx12 desk when I joined the trio, the guitarist had an LD System stage pa thing that acts as a sub and our stage monitoring so we bought a power amp and a pair of mint but used Mackie 12"tops with covers already fitted between us. The amp belongs to the guitarist and the cabs owe us £100 each if we split up, tbh I'd buy the two shares out even though they have paid for themselves which I'm sure they would be happy with.
 13. I'd rather go out of my way to see something I've not seen before, I'm going to see onehandloose on Friday with his rockabilly band, I've never been to a rockabilly gig and I won't walk out if I don't like the look of them! The best function band I've ever seen was a klezmer band in Manchester, they were all clearly pro players bought together by the lady bassist and front women, stands were used for some songs but they were incredible! 150 people dancing to klezmer music obscuring the band so I doubt they were too bothered?
 14.
Then he's a twat.
or got something to send to the op when he says he disagrees with his sums? (We already know he is a twat, the op has told us )
 15.
Especially without the crutch of a music stand.
That might even be a plectrum in my hand looking at my right hand? Terrible!
 16.
I wish I could sit down and play the bass during the gig. I much prefer it. Or would that be un-professional and would people leave the pub?
Well he is the drummer, lol. I doubt singing drummers are allowed anyway are they?
 17.
I am always amazed how many singers seem to have no regime for looking after their voice.. One of the reasons why we don't/can't do more than 2 hrs...
The female singer in my function band went for a lesson with a vocal coach, the coach asked her "whats you warmup regime?" "?erm a pint of Stella and a fag?" "No no you cant have a pint of Stella before a gig!" "What about Carling?" 100% true story, never been back but she can knock out some blondie, pretenders, specials etc so its all good.
 18.
Whilst his arithmetic is correct, the calculations he's used to get there aren't. In short, if his valuations are reasonable he's paying you £31.50 too much!
Lol
 19.
If the valuations are anything close to realistic then take the money and get out fast before he changes his mind. But the figures make no sense. No one says 'two tops are worth £218 pounds', they would say £220, or even just £200.
maybe he is quoting ebay final sale prices though?
 20. I'll grab it now, its on the coat/hat stand.....lol
 21. It's only possible if there is a DB in shot, lol
 22.
Maybe also list some alternative gigs on the same night add the travel directions as an all round service to the punters.
How will the band know they have annoyed a bassist if they dont see them walk in and right out again then though, mind you if the band dont look up they wont have noticed, maybe we should email the venue and tell them to pass the message on to the band?
 23. It was a black postcard ernie ball thing.
