1. We were too scared to touch the truss rod when we were young, some people still are I suppose?
2.
A truism....the definition of "good" tone is entirely subjective.
3. A plug tester should be in all our kit bags really Just bought a spare one for less than £4 off ebay as I keep losing my work one then 'borrowing' my gig bag one!
4. So I had an 8 page thread about 5 string jazz basses and no one mentions these?!They look great imo, I really dont like the 3 and 2 or even 2 and 3 headstocks BRX, I've never had all the problems you always mention with string lie etc, even my Fender has straight strings and holds tune just fine for hours on end, it also has the lightweight F tuners so no neck dive even with a light for a Fender V body
5. Best tone? What was the scientific measure used for best tone? Filed under 'flawed' with all the other tests imo
6. I've moved all the notes to suit the five strings and I'm playing that part on the D now, I played it as a semi tone before but I think it probably is a full tone if I'm looking at the right bit. I've got a fairly reasonable version together now
7. But we are all different JTUK, your boring and easy line to the next person might be quite hard and rewarding for them, for most players that DJ5 would be a good enough instrument to not inhibit their playing, if its a jam you either play it and enjoy it or take your own single cut 37" scale 9 string half fretted half fretless next week
8. I think the term unplayable is the problem I suppose in fairness if a particular bass stops a person being able to play a piece they can on a different bass then to them that bass is unplayable even if that music sounds like a load of frustrated guitarist noise, even the worst bass with a setup and proper strings would be able to be used for something making it playable in the strictest sense of the word.
9. First rule of the active bass club, keep at least one battery in front of yourself, I have 3 pp3s in my gig bag at any one time, never needed to use one in an emergency but they are there, strings and battery once a year around my own birthday to help remember these days
10.
I'm a poor enough player that I'd assume it was me before I assumed it was the bass, upright or not.
Likewise but I know its not my bass as I have heard the noises Jake Newman and Geoff Chamlers can get out of it, ah must be me after all
11.
When you've just got off a double bass, the wide P bass neck and high action seem neither wide nor high.
Since taking up DB I agree but then in a way you can say the same about "unplayable" uprights or cant play arco on particular strings, cant slap on particular strings. Tools for the job just the same I suppose.
12.
That makes sense, but do the regulations require that sockets/conduit containing three phases have such warning labels? After all, it's not exactly 'normal use' for someone to open up a socket so if the normal users of such sockets cannot be exposed to three phases by simply plugging in a standard plug why bother with warning labels at all. After all, by definition, it's only qualified electricians who can be expected to properly understand what such labels actually mean in practice.
To the letter then it should if it contains 400v or has more than one supply inside, the 400v sticker is just confusing for joe public and doesn't really explain fully to any electricians working on the system, on the other hand you would not have room for an essay on a socket outlet, damned if you do damned if you dont? The normal label if it was because the sockets nearby where on a second phase would be "Pottential 400v between socket outlets in this area" probably with a symbol of two arrows pointing at each other > < or one on each pointing at the other socket. In large installations the electrical engineer will insist on which phase each ring main is on to avoid that yet keep the load for the entire building divided equally. Of course a month later the jukebox engineer turns up and drills a hole through the wall to get at the nearest socket and you are back where you started!
13. I've never played a good five string jazz until the one I've just bought, anything pre 2008 gets a bad press from what I have seen and then again more praise after 2012, four strings are less trouble but most fender fives I have tried were naff so I'm glad I've bagged me a nice one with a tight B
14.
No, there's more of you than that, with an average of 3.7 puns each, which I've rounded up to 4. You all get a pat on the head.
Nothing gets past ur ize does it?
15. I was expecting a stampede of puns but it looks like just the two of us horsing around with this?
16. If you are going out take a coat...its friesian out there!
17. Oh I see like that is it? Dont mince your words.....
18. Lol, you got it! The 2 small ones were ok, just the massive one in the middle making a hash of things
19. Flea will be able to order a pair of new ones ready for the next tour too, he must have worn those ones out by now
20. Trans finish or a maple top is about as fancy as I go but I will take a solid sparkle finish Funk5 all day long
