1.
As a 5 string player I always find it a pain to have to look through all the 4 stringers.
^this. Not bothered about the price bands though, it feeds the gas!
 2. Its funny that they make a sig of a bass someone played later as the version they played then was just a regular version, if that makes sense? No one needed a Flea Stingray sig in the 90s because it was just a black Stingray that could have ended up being owned by anyone, its all a nonsense to me im affraid unless its a proper recreation of an old design with correct pickups etc or something like a Bryan May guitar.
 3. Sometimes polite is good, in fact it was polite I was after yet this one has a bit of fire in its belly actually, the front pickup is dirtier than I expected with the tone on full If only your back was as flexible as your Freaky thumbs dude, how is it today? Did you sleep well?
 4. My first Jazz porn thread picture 2013 (bought new yesterday) USA Standard Jazz V Tobacco burst, RW and torty.
 5.
Hi there, here'a full picture of my Big Al 5 in Blue Pearl. I really love its versatility. My favourite sound option is currently middle plus rear coil in serial mode.
I still want to try one of these but no where ever has them for sale especially in a 5
 6. Cool, at least you have a game plan now, I had no idea what my bass was like and no you tube video can tell you that, Jake checked mine over and declared it fit at my first lesson and Geoff Chalmers has played it at the bassbash and took a shine to it as is so I think I lucked out on the setup front Get practicing now then....I should be too!
 7.
Totally agree. Keep it passive as that's what these basses do best. Once you add a preamp I think things change, they get complicated and you lose some of the basic charm a plug in and forget bass does so well. I've noticed that when I play my jazz I hardly touch the knobs, but with my Yamaha I'm tweaking quite a bit during gigs. Maybe that's just me but I've always been like that. As much as my old P-retro could produce so much I felt it ruined the simplicity of my P bass. I recently got a Darkglass VMTD pedal over getting a preamp put in my Jazz, and what a difference that makes. Warms everything up just nicely. 8.
Don't go with onboard pre Pete - keep it passive - if you need a hand in the tone shaping or giving the output a helping hand, do it via an external preamp. The fact that it hasn't got a battery or any actives is what gives it the charm it has and it is very different from your MMs. The output from a passive is always likely to be a lot lower because you are used to the hefty MM pickup with running the MM pres on full boost! Yes, I probably would have gone for the Lakland, primarily for the neck profile (being closer to what Im used to) but I think the F was the correct choice in getting the traditional J bass down as to your plan - it ticks more of the boxes than the DJ does and there is something cool about having the F headstock and it being USA as opposed to the none USA Lakland. Now if the DJ was a 55-60, it may have been a different story! Enjoy it dude.
No I will leave it alone for now, you know what the sound is like in there so I cant make a serious judgement yet.
 9.
It's a beauty, for sure. There is no better combo for a Fender. Your guitarist needs to lose those sunnies though!

It's a beauty, for sure. There is no better combo for a Fender. Your guitarist needs to lose those sunnies though!
Ah that is some form of in joke with that band, they have a bag of stupid glasses for certain songs, Lol. I have my own glasses and therefore I am exempt!
 10.
Nice bass! How are you getting on with the wider spacing compared to the Musicman? My only 5-string has the narrower MM style spacing and when I've tried Fenders they feel a bit weird at first.
It doesn't bother me too much, it was worse when the action was too high in the shop but now its low enough for me it is OK, it has the adjustable spacing but I think I will leave it where it is, I cant work out which groove each string should be in anyway, Lol
 11. In action last night, pub was full with dancers from the soundcheck until the encores! Tricky for the misses to get any decent pics so here is how 'The Wall' stands for now It is hard to say what the tone of it is like because that venue is terrible for bass sound, brick floor and glass roof, town called mallice sounded great on the front pup tone full on, Mustang Sally (I know I know..) sounded great with the burpy rear pickup setting. I used my 2x12 as FOH and I have never had it so loud on the volume pot so I probably need to get more aggresive with the preamp controls, either that or get a J retro fitted, Lol Anyway thanks for the advice everyone, hopefully I have made the right choice, EBS Freak would have took the Lakland and in some ways it was the better bass and £400 less but well look at the, burst, RW and tort goodness and a real USA Fender with a tight B string on a 34" scale, who'd of thunk it?
 12. Knackered now, just got in two gigs in a row but the jazz is really nice, plays great and nothing wrong with the B string on it. Played the whole night all on the jazz in the end to see which songs it works best on. Pictures tomorrow.
 13. EBS Freak modelling some contenders... First to try was this USA Standard V, action was way too high but generally sounded good, he offered to lower the action while we went to guitar guitar.... Next was this USA deluxe, nice neck and finish etc but not very good passive at all and the preamp left me cold tbh.. Same in black/maple, much nicer sounding bass for some reason but not keen on the looks Last up was the Lakland DJ5, it had a wire trapped under the control plate other than that it was brilliant! This very nearly came home and made me decide I wanted a passive bass rather than any whistles and bells, So we went back to PMT, he had done the neck as promised, sounded and played great, nice B string, burpy passive Jazz so I did a deal including new strings and dunlop straplocks took it home sorted a loose knob, restrung it, fitted the straplocks, got a gig at 7pm! (they have lost the cheap case so he gave me Deluxe one which I'm not going to use hence the hiscox in the pic, no allen keys though so I need to find out what they are as I dont have a special neck one and my massive set doesn't have one for the intonation screws?)
 14. I love my Stagg but for a decent stage the DB wins everytime imo

 17. Just packing up from mine, not bad all told and we had a dark themed burlesque dancer, pics to follow once I have wifi
 18. Excellent news, I still think good strings and the adjustable bridge is a good idea for us noobs and to keep alteration costs down should it need a tweak either way. My strings took a week to settle but once they do I understand spiros are meant to be very stable? These new basses take a few years to mature to from what others have said. Enjoy Im gigging mine tonight at a Dark Burlesque show, pics to follow in the db porn thread tomorrow hopefully
 19. The best If you look through the double bass bash thread you will find some info on them and a uk builder of them, if you though the TKS custom coatings were far out you haven't seen Daves Marvel Comics ones!
