It's ok, the 5502 does NOT sound like a Stingray, I guarantee you But the Squier DeLuxe is a very interesting animal. A good project bass. It's decent stock, but you'd probably find the preamp lacking a bit and the pickups a bit polite.
That's not in the spirit of basschat, you are meant to say you had a custom built Stingray made by Leo himself after returning him from the grave specially for the job, then you bought a 55 02 and its more Stingray than the Stingray so you sold the Stingray, a few months later you start a Stingray gas thread
I've just put some new Innovation strings on mine, and the coloured cloth bits at the top come all the way past the nut! The E string is particularly long, the green bits goes all the way to where I would fret for F... I think it still plays ok, but is there anything I should do about it?
I did the same £145 on a set of strings, messed the silks up trying them, I was very very grumpy! Took the anchor block off, drilled the holes out deeper leaving about 10mm of wood left from the string ball, unwound a tiny bit of silk from the E string peg end then used a clear nail varnish to tidy up the silks beyond the nut. Sorted
Nice - but I've got a real hankering for a maple neck with black block inlays. Olympic White is still in the frame but now I've seen the picture of that red Sei at the Bass Gallery, I'm leaning more towards the red. That Sei would be perfect if it had a maple neck with the blocks.... Problem is, there aren't any off-the-shelf basses that exactly match what I want (the Squier is the closest). I could get one made but I'm not sure I could justify two and a half thou for an Overwater - or a similar kind of price for a Sei. Realistically, my budget is probably the same as StingrayPete's - a max of £1600. I'll try and get my hands on a Squier to try and see what that's like - I know the 4-string VM's get a lot of respect on here. If I get on with it, that might keep the GAS at bay while I keep my eyes open for the perfect Candy Apple/Maple/Blocks combo in the marketplace....
I shall report back after any shopping trips with findings, feel free to let me know what you try and where too
I've had both of these... American Deluxe Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...-bwb-pickguard/ American Standard Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...color-sunburst/ Moved them both on - this is so subjective of course. Personally, I liked the Standard a lot more than the Deluxe and, actually, it's one of the few basses I wish I hadn't sold. I'd go out and try as many as possible mate... you've got me thinking now though - I want another Jazz V. And I'm 100% sure that there are far superior Jazz Basses out there but personally speaking, and I know I'm very blinkered here, I love and want the Fender decal on the headstuck.
This is what worries me about Fender, if I find one I like I'll keep it forever!
I went through this last week and actually gave up looking for a 5 string Jazz. Nothing really rocked my boat, so i got a cheap(er)Yamaha for now. I have a VM PJ and as nice as it is ive never really loved it. Maybe its the cheap wood or the rough edges on the sides of the neck. Compared to my CV's it seems a bit lower down the scale. This was the reason i didnt go tor the VM jazz V. Another one i looked at was the Fender Modern Player Jazz 5. This seemed like a really good choice but the one i picked up (and this was just a 4 string) was very heavy. As my budget was quite low, and i really wanted a passive bass, i decided to just get a Yamaha 5 string (completely the opposite of what i was looking for) and wait until i see if i get on with the extra string (again), then probably get a Fender MIA jazz 5 next year. I did have a Lakland DJ5 a few years ago. Lovely bass but i never really liked the tone. It was warmer and deeper than the 4 string Jazz basses i had at the time. I wish i still had it though :-) EDIT: I realise the above doesn't make sense. The idea was to get the Yamaha now and leave a gap for the perfect 5 string jazz, rather than getting something that will do the job but i would want to replace. The Yamaha sits in its own space in the collection.
I suppose as long as I come home with something it's a successful shopping trip
Lakland - not a Fender......better than a Fender. Go Darryl Jones.
Best not go there again, I'm now blocked by two people afaik The F badge appeals but it needs to be good, I've played some crap Fenders but not one bad Lakland.
DEAL http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_details.cfm?ID=2932&type=Bass Guitar
My last jazz was CAR, I Was never that keen, I don't like gold hardware or pearloid either, other than that it's perfect, lol Interesting what you say about the USA deluxe though do I'm still up for that I think. Xotic are really good to play and the finish is excellent, bit over budget though I guess, saying that it's only money isn't it

I've started a jazz V thread to save derailing this one, I'm not sure me buying one USA deluxe is going to help with the 250 million debt but you know, watch the Pennies and all that!
I wasn't digging, Pete.... Just amusing myself with 'Previous'....lol...
No probs, I just wanted to make it clear, it really was a car crash but maybe he didn't put the time in or doesn't have the time I dont know.

The opening note is not the key of the song....

I've been studying both theory and physically trying to play the thing, I wish I'd got into theory/reading much earlier! -
Santa wants to empty his sack for me I reckon! Must be a fiver. Must be a Jazz type bass. Active or passive. Try before I buy. £300-1600. Top of the list and budget USA Fender V Deluxe, Oly White, rosewood, blocks and bound. But I've never found one with a B I like, if I do I'll grab it Lakland 55-60 Good B nice build quality, not a Fender. Squier Jazz vintage modified, Dont know much, tell me more? Mayones Jabba Classic, maybe. Lakland 55-14 new model USA built J and MM coil switchable, active passive etc But its not a Fender or a Jazz as such? What am I missing and where should I be shopping? PMT Birmingham, guitar guitar Birmingham and Bass Direct are my nearest shops. Any ideas?

He bowed out gracefully and in fairness he would be the first to admit his lack of ability, I wouldn't normally judge anyone like that as everyone has something someone else can't do imo and ime but seriously the guy isnt really ready to be in a band even playing simple stuff. He's a nice guy though.

I went to see a band a few years ago, bassist was a member here, he and the guitarist had fallen out with the guitarist/singer who was very talented but more of a learn it and repeat it player, every now and again they would give each other the wink and shift maj to min or the reverse. The guy just looked lost and sounded terrible as the others ploughed on in key together, cruel but brilliant, the audience didn't notice what was going on and I had even more fun in the second half after I pointed out in the interval that I knew what the game was and I 'conducted' a few semi tone shifts to them both -
The previous bassist in my band played the same part for the choruses and verses for Blondie's One Way Or Another, hence the 'previous'
I love Cort basses but this is the model that made me admit that looks do in fact matter
I can see this bass would divide opinions......or a melon, wooden table etc

I dont really notice things like this anymore, nut width, neck width, neck profile, jumbo frets, skinny frets, no frets, 34" 41.3" or 35" scale. I think I've become lazy and complacent rather than super skilled or anything

I have no issue with people not knowing what they are doing as long as they are honest, "erm I'm not sure, I play C minor to start" would be fine, saying it is in C if you dont know what it means or the difference between maj or minor isnt helping anyone. -
I'm liking TKS, I dont know what they sound like but the looks draw me in enough to want to try them if and when I need a new cab. My 1x12 Genz is getting a bit farty I think due to my abuse so you never know when the gas will strike!
