1.
My Dad died from the same kind of cancer last year, I really really hope Wilko can now put this in the past, my Dad had similar op but wasn't successful, would be soooo great to have someone beat this poxy nasty condition. Bit emotional, sorry.
I was typing as you posted, it goes without saying I dont think 'your' post is brilliant
2. That is brilliant, I saw the update and had that "oh no" moment, I didnt realise it was even an option. Go on Wilco!
3. The venue isn't booking the bass player though, they are booking what they hope is a good band, the person in charge of putting the band together for a show picks the band, if they are hiring an unheard bass player and there are notes available for the show which bassist are you going to hire? Knocking out rehearsed covers like most of is do is fine, it might take you longer to learn but as long as you do before the gig that's ok, could you dep the entire bass line to every song in The Lion King for TONIGHT by ear?
4. Black, 2eq, these things are both the correct options to choose
5. Why was this thread not called "Do you want to see my chopper?" ?, I'm deeply offended by it not being called that!
6.
Who he..? .or is that a generic name ...??
Early oasis, but you can also "do a guigsy" I suppose but I'm not going to mention Adam Clayton at this stage
7. Exactly, Guigsy was (is?) a professional bass player!
8. There are lots more crap players that can't read or play by ear than there are sh*t hot readers that can't improvise or learn a track by ear so anyone given the task of recruiting members for the band is going to hedge their bets hiring a reader, if they suck at reading or their general playing sucks they get sacked. That is the nature of every profession isn't it? I'm an electrician but I don't know much about electronics in machines for example so I either don't get asked or I have to pass the work on which is exactly what a high profile but non reading bassist friend of mine does, I also know for a fact Doddy and Jake are busier than my friend work wise.
9. Probably be possible with Itunes to link the key and the dots commissioned by the artist when it's released, that would be cool!
10. That's only ever going to work in a pre rehearsed situation though, it's still noodling he's just good at noodling that's all. Noodling won't get you a Broadway or west end show gig, your going to say he doesn't want that I know but the point is he WOULD be missing out on potential work. Of course this is tosh anyway because your girlfriends brother could be professional but is in fact not.
11. Cheers guys, I dont think I'm going to do it right now but I'm going to try and get a few swing numbers down so next time I get asked I'm a bit more confident with the genre, some stuff just needs a DB doesnt it iiipopes?
12. Perfect for a nice little lounge music gig or a Jazz trio, enjoy
13.
Love my 6.0. The only issue I have with it is the valve doesn't seem to be mounted very securely. Tone has been reduced to a quiet distorted fart on a few occasions and I thought it was blowing valves as a swap cured it. After a couple of times it occurred to me to just reseat the valve that was in there and lo and behold, all sorted. Probably junked a few good valves before I realised that! Love the amp though, sounds great and power to spare.
Hasn't it got a litlle bracket to hold it?
14. And you can't play improv from learning someone elses improv by listening to it, that is in itself not improv.
15. The thing is is loads easier/quicker to learn just by listening if you understand some theory, if you understand the concept of the key and can work out by ear what key it is in (my CDs don't have key signatures in the sleeve do yours?) Then there is going to be less trial and error notes.
16. Just because it was recorded on a four string doesn't mean it can be played on a standard four string, drop D or a B bass are quite common, that guy who plays with Bruno mars looks dead cool with his old school p bass, everything I've heard on the record had extended range bass on it, it's the sound the audience know and the sound I want to replicate when playing those songs live.
17.
I'm very much a Stingray fan and still wake up with night terrors every now and then because I idiotically sold my trans red late '80s stingray years ago :/ As I feel the same way about Jazzes as you feel about Precisions, I'm probably not the best to advise other than the Squier Deluxe active Jazz (in black) does intrigue me. It's got a much wider neck than any Fender 5, 51mm at the nut which I really like the idea of myself. I guess it's just down to what you're after. As long as you factor in a pro set up to tweak them to your preferences, I Don't think you could really go wrong with either the Deluxe J or VM passive J.
Thanks for the info the vm and deluxe keeps getting a good mention on here, bit more home work online then a shopping trip I think, white fender deluxe V blocks and bound rosewood finger board is top of my list right now, I've got gigs in the diary to pay for it too which is the main thing
18. Id happily gig every cab and head mentioned in this thread, its all good
19. The best bass for build quality I've ever seen was a yamaha BBNE5,the black paint looked almost wet, stunning bass.
20. Yes I wont rule out a Squier, whenever I have a P I dont get on with them even though all my favourite albums are recorded using one, I know people here who have the opposite with Rays. Which 5 string Squier Jazz should I be trying?
21. Im not too keen on the pickguard or pickups personally, just a fairly regular Jazz is what I need (want), I like the idea of having a proper Fender but I also really like the Lakland 95-14 which could mean selling one if not two Stingray 5s. Hhmm.
22.
Outstanding desk research there, Kiwi. Each one of those is an illuminating read. Seems to me that Fender's new regime is trying to throw their oil-tanker into a U-turn. Years spent trying to build a chain end up with Fender $11m out of pocket to their biggest customer. Now what? Hey, it's time to rearrange the deck-chairs and change the strategy to brand-extension. Here's Bono! Buy Fender-branded cream cheese! 300 mins free per month on your Leo-phone (e&oe) If anyone wants to know why Fender are in trouble they need only click on the second link from the top. .
I'm working this weekend but I think I might go and check out some Jazz Vs sooner rather than later, I'm not even joking.
23. You know over the years Lozz my treble knob is being wound up less and less, since (trying) to play DB I think my ears have been re tuned!
