Ive played in bands with these people who have sacked drummer after drummer after drummer because "their timing was off and too loud", in reality that means, they are not the loudest in the band and the solo they copied note for note with no feel does not fit to a different but perfectly suitable beat that has a slightly different feel to the one they have studied on their vhs for the last 20 years!

That's what I had seen done using the base of an old drum stool, basically the end pin just goes down the centre tube so it stands up like a little rocket!

Once your in an originals band situation its totally different unless you are Fleetwood Mac or something as what you are offering isn't likely to entice the punters to come regardless of how good you are, if the band gets some exposure and more fans then they are offering you an incentive which is usually the line used to get covers bands in, "you might get loads of gigs off it" like jtuk says though if people know you are playing for free the punters think that is what you are worth and probably want to offer you and other bands the exact same fee (nothing) at their gig, "you might get loads of gigs off it" and so it continues...... Good luck to you though and if you ever get beyond playing for free for the possibility of a pint and a few CDs sold and any of your songs become popular I'll be sure to suggest to the band that we trot them out for you

As the clips you are liking are either stingray 5s which may be ceramic (good chance really) and the USA Sterling im thinking you are liking the ceramic pickup tone? Ive just come from my band practice with the trio, and I was at one yesterday with a function band, the blue sr5 did everything from ub40 to pretenders to status quo, beatles, queen, wings, cult, van morrison, eagles etc etc im not sure how many more tricks it needs, I think the fact I used a pick, fingers, slap, thumb and a palm muted pick style might help though (thats just live and let die, lol). The 3 eq SR5 with pickup selector probably does lend itself to more styles easier than my Classic5 with its 2 eq preamp and parallel only alnico pickup but man its a nice bass!

[/quote] I think you have to work a Stingray, I like that about them and think it has helped me become a more versatile player as the preamp can only get you so far, anyone expecting to play in the same position with the same technique as you can to some extent with a Jazz bass to cover many genres will be disappointed, I suspect P bass players would have a similar feeling as a fellow single pup bass players, but with a different outcome obviously. Ive heard folk, jazz, funk, blues, rock and country all sound brilliant on a Ray.

[/quote] The thing is so many of these charities are just a cover for a money making business, where possible if rather give goods to the people concerned than money or items to sell for money, I'm pleased that fly Fisher made all that money at his gig but it worries me how much cash goes directly to those in need even if the event can be run for free and you have avoided the scam brewery etc, if that charity sends 5% of that to a good cause and the rest goes to "administrative costs" its a waste of my time to be honest, I'd rather now an elderly neighbours lawn or something. The money and cars the top brass at most charities get is a piss take, the idea of liberal hippy types taking enough to live on and cover costs (and quite right they should too) has become a bmw and a huge salary.

People have made them for the stagg from old drum stools and there is a proper stand available too.

[/quote] Good on ya, and I won't stop you doing it next year but my band won't be on the bill unless they use a dep bass player. For the odd good gig it means I miss out I'm happy to dodge the countless sh*t ones, I'll still be doing the odd pub gig for £30 a head no doubt but that's not for free or charity. As these threads prove there is always plenty of bands happy to do them so its hardly like I'm responsible for the end of all fund raising gigs.

In this instance the punters are NOT happy fly Fisher, they don't want to pay for a ticket, that's their choice as its their club, if I'd known that in the first place for my self dignity I'd have happily let some one else do it. I've done my share for charities I do support and for some I don't over the years, I'm done unless it at least pays costs or flea breaks his arm

As I've said in my opening post this will be MY last charity one regardless of who or what it is aid of, what other people or bands do is up to them, this one in particular got my goat as the members don't even want to pay to get in which is the nail in the coffin strangely as I'd already decided this would be my last ever free gig before I knew that.

Any of the branded ones should be good, basslines, Seymour Duncan, Bartolini would probably be my choice, I'd get a John east preamp too.

I'd say you would prefer the streamliner over the shuttle if you like the orange sound, chalk and cheese between the two Genz amps really, but both are good just depends what you want, I actually prefer the fet only preamp in my shuttle 3.0 or the fet channel of shuttlemax head over the valve only pre of my 6.0, so what do I know?

Eub are a funny territory aren't they? The NS basses are much better built than a stagg and probably sound more like a DB but they look and feel less like one than a stagg, that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want from it, if some one wants to go to a full DB in the near future I still think the stagg is better but if you want something that plays easier and a bit more fretless bass feel wise yet sounds good the NS has it. The bsx looks and sounds great but I've not played one so I'd be interested how it feels in comparison with a real DB?

As nice as the ns basses are I find them less like a double bass than a sorted stagg, that's fine in its own right as its not a double bass, as soon as I tried one I decided I needed a DB rather than a better quality eub for me personally, all those finger board markings confuse the hell out of me! Now the Yamaha silent bass on the other hand.....

Im sure there are better ones, krivo looks good too, but for £70 im happy with it. Tried blending the piezo in with it today at practice but the piezo output is too weak to go into the aux in via the fishman, im thinking of making a special double lead with two jack plugs on each end, one schaller and one for the bassmax, bassmax via the fishman then send both via a behringer ab100 pedal to blend them to the right levels. I can either just unplug that from the normal input on my amp when using elec bass or put it into the pa mixer as we use one of those pa systems that goes behind us backed up with mackie tops for larger gigs.

To be fair the club is not behind organising it but you are right I bet the first £150 of beer isn't free is it? Fwiw yes people really are paying a fiver to see us and eat the buffet, lol

Best of luck from me, 8 years and counting here, it aint easy but its worth it for the cost if nothing else!
