As an artist in a perfect world, money should not be mentioned. Unfortunately it's far from being that perfect so it's up to you to make decisions. Best
To be honest its the members wanting to come for free as they have paid a fee that pissed me off most, without the £5 tickets they can go for free but only to watch tv and play pool rather than see a band.
 2.
I don't agree, if your band is worth, for example, £150 for a gig, in my experience the band will be treated badly and the charity will not see the £150.00. Better by far to do a regular gig for £150 and donate the money to the charity of your choice.
We are not organising the event though are we, if we were then that would be easier I agree, the principal is rather than pay the band pay a fiver into the pot, we are doing our bit, the venue is expecting about 100 people so thats £500 in the pot without any extra donations or raffle prizes etc much more than the £150 raised the other way. Not an issue anyway as I say its my last
 3.
In my experience, a band is valued by what they charge, so a band that plays for nothing is considered to be worth nothing.
I hear you but the principal is what we are worth goes to charity, I would not play their club for free just because they want a band for the night for example, the idea here is lets say our little trio is worth £150 minimum so that goes to the guide dogs and we have a fun gig, but that wont work if the members dont want to pay for a ticket will it, its not like we will just be playing for free if there was no charity event is it?
 4. I made a declaration earlier this year that I have done my share of free gigs now, dragging all the gear miles for an unappreciative audience purely because the organisers will throw anything they can get at the event if they can get it for free regardless of suitability, I appreciate they are doing the best they can though. I told the current trio I play with that it will be my last charity gig after the last freebie disaster and I wont be depping any free gigs from this day forth even if we will supposedly bag millions of weddings off it for the band and the regular bass player and me to share, let him do it. Just to help me confirm this I have just heard that the guys in my band did this gig last year as a full rock covers band, they said hardly anyone turned up because its a private members club they said they should not have to pay to get in to any event, £5 for a live band and a buffet with donations to guide dogs. So we are taking thousands of pounds worth of gear and setting it all up, playing probably two hours to entertain them while someone else feeds them all for free, I'd rather just put a tenner of my own cash into a guide dogs collection tin and have a night in than have the piss taken out of us. If they dont want it thats fine, its their club but seriously whats the point? We have sold lots of tickets to mates so it will be a good fun gig regardless but defo my last one for charity.
 5.
Hat!
How did we take 18 posts to get to the most important thing?!
 6.
I also love Paul Denmans sound!!! I really like the sound of Louis Johnsons bass on MJ's 'Off the wall' album, it's so nice!!! I had quite a few emails about how I customised my stingray after I was featured in Notreble magazine playing it. (You can see/hear the artical here) http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2014/08/19/jimmi-clarke-teen-town/ So I made a video to talk through what I have changed on the bass. Stingray purists will hate me!!! But I really love the MM stingray. http://youtu.be/tS-tpgPFUpI
I like it, even though I always say the stingray tone is more about the pup and preamp rather than the neck, bridge and body somehow it does retain some stingray fizziness even on the front pickup with no active preamp. I like to see a bass being enjoyed
 7.
Definitely made myself look a bit of a plum with the RATM comment...Definitely a modified pre-EB (no body contour), I just kind of assumed it was a transition one because of the era. Whoops! Bit pedantic but I'd still say Flea didn't debut with a Cutlass. He did use a pre-EB Stingray, but switched over to the Cutlass live to get away from the neck stability issues he was having, so I'd say he debuted with a Pre-EB Stingray! Agree about his Modulus sound, though my personal favourite is still the Higher Ground intro with a Spector NS-2! Word is that he did record Aeroplane with a Stingray however, possibly using the B/B/R EB Stingray that he was using live at the time. Excellent tone on that song, and great exposure on that solo! Cass was playing in a mate's band when I met him, at the Half Moon in Putney (band was called Asylum, unfortunately didn't last too long!...). He was playing a Cutlass at that gig, and when I asked him about it he said he started collecting them around the time of Stoosh as he had a bit more dosh. I think it's probably the case that he had only that one before, but started collecting more later, so sorry for confusing things on that one. The reason I mentioned the Stingray on P&S is because I asked him what he used to record Little Baby Swastika specifically, and he said "an old Stingray". Either he was calling his Cutlass a Stingray, or it's possible he actually used his transition Stingray (seen on the Weak video) to record just that song, or the whole album!...Don't know, but that's why I mentioned it! Anyway, apologies for storming in again with false information! Let's get on with celebrating the wonderful tone of the Stingray I would also cite Paul Denman and his lovely 'Ray tone with Sade!
Haha that makes sense then, thing is we can only take what someone else says they used on a record with a pinch of salt cant we, I forget what day it is never mind which bass I recorded certain things with, I have read many times that to get the killer Stuart Zender typical can only be a Warwick sound you use the pink 5 string Stingray he used for recording, lol As for flea, the Cutlass is in the 1984 album sleeve with live pictures from the very first gigs using it, its actually in cartoon form on the front cover, I know im sad
 8. I think you need an alnico pickup in the right spot and the right preamp, I doubt the wood and neck etc would make much difference.
 9. I've always done it for octaves as jtuk says, I do it for reggae numbers and country style too, a stingray with a mute bridge played with the thumb near the neck heel with the bass on full and treble switched off through a big stack is monstrous!
 10. Cass is the nuts isnt he, I wouldn't want to go on before or after him although at the same time im very envious!
 11.
Anti recommend is alesis sr16, totally wierd programming keys**. Hear Zoom ones are easier ** I'm actually a programmer by trade and I think it (the sr16) is totally illogical and counter intuitive
This is what I use, ive never tried to programme it, lol. I just use the preset patterns for jamming along.
 12.
I had The Gallery defret my US SUB some time back and they did a cracking job, I even had them replace the front dot markers with rosewood ones to make them almost invisible and present a cleaner look
^like
 13.
The Musicman tone I'm after.
That is what my black SR5 sounds like, the bass in the clip being a Sterling it has a pickup selector and the ceramic pickup like some SR5s (1993-2007ish?), she is an untameable beast but what a beast she is
 14. And a year later he still has that Cutlass on loan if he did not collect them until later, the bass tech is tuning a Ray up in the background ready for the next song if you watch carefully, not a pre EB though as it has an arm contour and possibly a truss wheel as it has no skunk(anansie) stripe http://youtu.be/xYMz6wsIKdg
 15.
Just to clear up a couple of things here: Cass Lewis - Definitely a pre-eb Stingray on P&S (I've spoken to him about this). He didn't start collecting Cutlass 1s until later on, while he was using G&Ls Flea - Used a Cutlass live a lot in the early days, but switched to transition-era EB Stingray (see the Give it Away video...). Recordings post - Uplift Mofo Party Plan are usually Spectors or Wals, very rarely a Stingray. Timmy C - Definitely used an 80s EB transition Stingray on that first album
Well here is Cass Lewis playing a Cutlass live in 1995 only months after forming the band so you better ask him again http://youtu.be/LY9G2bNd8eo Obviously that does not prove the album was not recorded with a wooden necked Ray but as we are clearing things up, lol. I know Flea went to a trans Ray, his main bass before getting well known here, thats why I said Debut stuff, and the Wal thing has been known for a long while, fwiw his best sound was his early Modulus days IMO. As for Tim C how do we know he used a trans era Ray on the album but not live? Just curious as he appears very connected to his pre EB bass, gaining the Badass bridge and the smooth pickup over the early ratm years. Ta
 16.
Tried adjusting the truss ?
Probably best for me to not comment again, I sense a lack of humour in Karl's reply so I shall leave the words custom leather strap on for you to enjoy
 17. I am really having trouble getting my bass to hang right, any ideas?
 18. "This time next year.... ....this will still be on Gumtree".
 19.
Go on, I'll bite. What do you do with it?
Lol, Obviously I know but I will let bassace fill you in......... I have not had the pleasure of changing my DB strings yet, just the Stagg ones and that went quite badly!
 20. There will be basses galore to see up close at the Derby bass bash Oct 5th, straight down the M1
 21. It is killer isnt it!? I ended up having to play along to it, my Classic with the John East 2 band preamp does a fairly good impression of a pre EB Ray too, nice!
 22.
Fuego, Phish Here's mine: Phenomenon Choices Falling Away Fragmentation Echoes of Life Round and Round Avalon *title track* (Parts 1-3) Do Unto Them New Beginning Echoes of Life
http://youtu.be/0u8teXR8VE4
 23. The three big Ray users mentioned here used variations on the theme to start with on their debut stuff and all pre EB too, Cass Lewis- Cutlass rather than Stingray and more known for using a Sabre anyway. Flea- Again a Cutlass as you can see the modulus neck in the early 1984-5 footage. Tim Commerford- Stingray Pre EB but with a Badass bridge and some kind of smooth faced pickup. Oh No maybe it is all in the fingers after all
