Or was it 80s, either way, it was a preEB 2 band.
The black one was 70's with tantulam caps and the natural was 82 with the same 2 band circuit still used today but in defo sounded better than a modern one to my ears, it was not strung through either so I think the pickups must be better or just aged nicely in the old ones?

I dont think the body wood makes much difference, it has been said that you can screw a MM pickup and a 3 EQ to a piece of floor board and as long as the pickup is in the right place for the bridge and scale length it will sound like a stingray, I think there is some truth in it. I was going to make a Rickenbacker joke about the sharp splintering edges but I shall resist
-
Ha don't go there! Lol
-
My 3 eq ones with a side jack dont fit on a stand without hitting the bass knob, for that reason alone the 2 eq wins
-
Cant beat a nice Lakland
-
Strung through body, epoxy preamp with tantalum caps rather than electrolytic, slab body, larger pickup magnets and a dollop of 70s magic

I have bit the bullet and screwed the schaller to the fingerboard, first screw snapped off on one side, pilot drill broke off in the opposite one, lol. Nothing a bit of countersink drill and ebony filler and sanding wont fix if it ever comes off but I cant see that anytime soon. Sounds pretty good on its own but better when blended with the piezo via the fishman, my bass is very feedback prone im certain of it now.

Beginner bow recommendations please
stingrayPete1977 replied to fretmeister's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I still dont know how to rosin the bow properly! -
No problem

People who had trouble with the early pre amps had a good service from stagg with most of them sent out a whole electronic unit with questions asked so hopefully they will look after you, at least you know what it is now, that's half the battle won
-
If agree with that mingsta, I don't think it's the alder either as I'd say that's about right for the two eq anyway, I love a two eq!

Every child to learn an instrument?
Just to clear up to grammeFriday, As he seems to not really understand. "Life skills" when mentioned with my 11 year old sons education: is the application of the skills & knowladge, that he is being taught in school to normal life and practical situations. IE mathamatics for budgeting your financial incomings & outgoings, or even things like estimating a journey time. Basically showing children that their knowladge works together and overlaps into combined knowladge. Because my son is a very hands on kid, once "Life skills" were applied to his education he actually flourished. It's a very effective teaching tool that is refered to as "Life skills" by his school. In my day we were mainly shown everything in theory but never had it applied to useful situations, so we were left thinking......what the hell do we use this for? THe same as long drawn out boring music lessons where we were made to learn to play keyboard by a teacher who hated our guts & was well aware none of us wanted to be there, we always came out thinking that it was a massive waste of time for all involved. I dont think I've ever heard of any child learning how to tie shoelaces in classes.....Parents usually teach their kids that. Aruments and name calling seemed to be happening because people have given their opinion & others are getting up-tight.
All very knowledgeable stuff -
Huh? Are you by any chance referring to SbMM, or is there an EBMM range I don't know about? I thought SbMM were half price (and think they indeed are here in Norway, after the price for EBMM dropped considerably. Before, if memory serves that is, the SbMMs were one third of an EBMM).
Not quite so simple as that! Ebmm did a range about four years ago I think called the 251 or something, two eq only, no hard case, poplar body and less colour options to choose from they were around £1050 in the UK compared to £1300 for a regular two eq or £1400+ for a three eq. They may have only been available in the UK though, I'm not sure. I use an angled Jack on all my basses.
-
You are not making a fair price comparison, the two eq ones you have seen are from a slightly cheaper range using a poplar body, no case, limited colour choices. There is nothing wrong with them but the standard two eq with a case and a trans finish ash body will only be slightly cheaper. Two eq sounds best, 3 eq is easier to dial in when playing live other than that you can't go wrong IMO

I'd join another band before buying a 4x12

New Fender Adam Clayton and Dee Dee Ramone Signatures
Chris Lakin has made him a jazz in the same livery.
I can't see how you can have a signature model for a player that plays something else and doesn't really have a 'known' instrument in a specific colour? Anyone want a black Hank Marvin signature series Gibson Les Paul for example? Pointless Fender tat for the over 50's with spare cash to impress less informed friends, looks a nice bass but its easy enough to pick up a nice Jazz bass and I'd take a Lakland over a Fender anyway! -
I must point out Thunderbirds was before my time really, more of a Jim'll fix it, It's a knockout, Rolfs Cartoon club kind of guy ....hang on maybe not!
'timmo' Ahh, i thought it was because of his love for Troy Tempest MB1. Nah Think he's more of a Aqua Marina type of guy!
Oh yes
It really isn't a business for most of us though, and this is a thread about pub gigs after all. Even if you got £100 a night each, and that has got to be so rare in a pub you've bought £10,000 of stuff between you and worked from loading at 6.00pm to unloading at 2.00am spent £20 between you on fuel, not to mention the rehearsal and practice time. I doubt we ever earn the minimum wage calculated as an hourly rate. Most of us just make decisions based upon simple practical expediency plus a big nod to the type of music we want to play, money rarely comes into it, though it is nice to get something. I've no problem with the solo musician with backing tracks or the many who deliberately decide to go out as a duo or trio just to make it pay a little, or at the other end the function band who go out with brass sections and the juke box set. Everyone's got to make their own decisions and try to make it work. I've seen great trios and great function bands as well as those who probably aren't putting enough in. It's hard enough playing the pubs without other musicians looking down their noses. If you entertain audiences and enjoy what you are doing then good luck to you.
Great post IMO, in reality if I change both sets of strings on my EUB and DB thats 4 gigs with a £75 cut from each one, hardly going to make a living from it am I? If I had more gigs I would just buy more basses, I go to work to pay my bills

I have never once given any thought to the number of members of a band as a punter? They are either good or they are not, in fact that is not fair sometimes they are good but not my cup of rosy that is all. Just because a band has a keys player and a singer that strums a bit of acoustic and some lights that does not make that band any easier to watch than a 3 piece that have covered all the bases IME. I play in a trio, the guitarist sings and the drummer does BVs. I play in a quartet with a lady singer doing 40% of main vocals, the drummer does 60% and the guitarist does BVs, visually the 4 piece looks like it would have the bigger sound but it does not. Nonsense totally IMO and IME, I have been in a band with keys and two guitarist blasting away many times before and we made a noise no worse or better but I got less money at the end of the night

Clayton lost love of his Lakland basses these days then? -
Yep but not a pre EB. They still carry a small premium over a later EBMM one but fetch less than a pre EB Ray, most of them were in that finish too probably came with a clear pickguard when new. I would rather it still had all its teeth though so I would factor in a refret off the final price.
