1.
Sometimes it works out OK. A guy let me use his very nice Trace rig on Saturday even though my own gear was on site. Just made life easier as his was already on the stage.
I have no issue with this, if its a ballache to move gear about and the sun is shining and the beer is nice I am all for using someone elses amp if they offer it to me, likewise I might offer mine if I can see they have bought one with them. If the support band are young and have a practice type amp but are friendly and appear as though they wont break stuff I will offer it up too, the last one had an old marshall combo about 30watts, his face using the Genz 9.2 shuttlemax and 2x12 cab was worth letting him use it Turn up with a silly haircut, no amp and no manners then be preapred to hear what a clean DI coming back at you via a beer and piss soaked PA wedge from the 80s sounds like
2.
Judging from your sig you like your Ray5's. I know where to come if I want advice. My budget? Yes I had my sights set quite low but sold some stuff that mean't I can look a little higher but not at the top end of that. Just getting things in my sights. Someone just pointed out G&L's. I like those too. Cheers
I dont mind them Certainly put the Ray35 in the mix with the stuff on par price wise, Yammys, Ibanez SR etc but if you went nearer the grand used I would go for a used SR5 over a new Ray35 myself. With a budget of a grand though you could get something sh*t hot used or new, I agree with G and L they do a whole range of good stuff and it amazes me I have never owned one myself for no real reason, why are you ruling out 35" scales? Lakland do some very nice basses, a 55-02 skyline used would do every gig ever asked of you and it for the foreseeable future
3. Printed in off, Douglas you are a legend! I promise no more drummer jokes....well...less drummer jokes maybe
4. It is similar to what I have worked out but I cant really whip that out at the practice if I need a recap, Lol
5. Good old Macca does it again, these sort of tunes get me in a right mess. As I said in another thread I have an audition on thursday, I wanted to nail a reggae one from the list as they requested so I sorted Bob Marley 3 little birds thanks to Allie's notes, the rest of the set I already know 8 of the songs and its a 1 hour session including saying our hellos and setting up gear, plenty then right? Nope, I get a text giving me the list of tracks they now want to do, why send me the whole list over! Of course the list contains one song I know and one I can blag and five I did not have much idea about ,pretenders, blondie etc all learnt fairly quickly, one way or another riff thing not right yet but close enough for now, I get to the Beatles Please Please Me thinking well that will be easy.......Notes anyone!
6. Plus you can afford a little more bite in your own rig without having no bottom end in the mix, I always pre EQ before the desk because it is as they say FTW
7.
Out...the P.A isn't man enough to handle full bass...so I wouldn't even bother with a bass bleed. You'll not gain anything and you could possibly compromise the Vox and other signals.
2 Mackie subs are more than capable of taking some bass guitar at pub volume, why will the voacls be going down there, are they a Barry White tribute show? I am saying in with that PA
8. If you are going up to a grand go for an ebmm ray5 instead of a sterling ray, nowt wrong with the 35 but your budget is quite wide ranging from your description.
9.
This is a general outline of my relationship with the Precision and Jazz bass- January - Yep, I am a definitely a P bass man. February - this Jazz is awesome, it's definitely my go to bass now. March - Aw man this P is amazing, flats and foam! April - Heavy Weather! What an album! Where's my Jazz bass?.... May - Sugar Copper Blue, wow! Now that is why the P bass is my favourite bass of all. June - I hear Evil by Interpol, that Jazz rocks! July - 'Whats Goin On' playing on Radio 2.... August - I just found some Smashing Pumpkins bass tracks on YouTube... September - Bobby Vega... October - Wow look! Bob Dylan with a Jazz bass! They really are aesthetically pleasing. November - I just rehearsed with the P bass and I heard every note of every song coming through the mix - P bass forever. December - Ooh look! That Jazz on basschat for sale is cool, I am having it... (Divorce lawyer on the horizon) Repeat year upon year upon year!
Of course to get the real Darcy tone you need either Billy Corgan to play the parts on who knows what type of bass? Or her other lesser known P or J option http://youtu.be/lN7I3qF1Ywk
10. Welcome to the forum though, Geoff from discover double bass lessons on you tube is a member here and his lessons are well worth a watch if like many of us you are getting to grips with upright, in fact I think most players would learn something from them
11. My headphone and line in is a bit noisy too, I never use it though.
12.
I dunno about that, but generally if the rehearsal before a gig goes well then it'll be a sh*tty gig, and vice versa...
^ without fail!
13.
Yes. It's a very strange thing, It's often said about Rickenbackers too, one sound only, they always sound like Chris Squire, but actually they also sound like McCartney.
John Deacon playing Queens Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy on his Stingray sounded just like most of Tim Commerfords output with Rage Against The Machine really didnt it? Lol And another funny thing is too get that exact sound macca got you need a fiddle bass or a Rick, or maybe you need his fingers!
14. Ah! If anyone posts a silver sparkle fu5 I might keel over.
15.
People often say the P does one thing well. But the P does a lot more than one thing, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to sound like both James Jamerson and JJ Burnell on the same bass.
I think thats true of all basses, I bet we could find a genre of most types of music played on most types of bass
16.
Spot-on. I find it easier to get a workable sound with a Precision, whereas a Jazz I find I have to do a lot of eq-ing to get it where I want it. But then, that`s probably because I`m sure I just try to make it sound like a Precision, doh!
I think this is it,if we try and venture too far from home. I look for mm tones in a jazz, a J guy cant get the mm smooth enough, the p guy misses the growl if he trys a J and the ricky fans miss the neck dive in anything else other than maybe a Gibson
17. Im sure there are some knowledgeable nonce bassists out there eitherway, lol
18. When I play a P it always sounds too thin, my favourite sound when everyone else uses them which I know is the reverse of many people with an MM, I like a J but I find them a bit dull sounding really, big smooth bass sound but boring and ive tried all sorts inc Sadawsky and Alleva versions always just a bit meh.
19.
I agree with most of this, I play guitar and bass, and I sing a little, but in my mind what other instruments I play is irrelevant in that situation. If I'm in a band playing bass and they've hired/chosen me to play bass, then I would like to think that they respect my ability as a bassist. And there is definitely a difference between telling someone what to play and giving constructive advice. I'd always absorb advice from other musicians. But dictators just make playing a soulless, unenjoyable experience for me.
Thats it and I try not to to watch those bands thinking "I wish he was on bass instead of singing", id try and enjoy it for what it is.
20. That is my main sticking point, I dont need 4 five string basses, my classic is going no where, the black one is my rough gig or jam night bass and is a proper tool it is worth least by far too as its got a fretted neck instead of the fretless it was made with, so that leaves the blue one its worth a bit that would contribute a few quid to the lakland but I like that bass too, I bought it new and it was my first fiver, its been in a video with me, lol
21. Im not as clear cut as everyone on the idea of being a bassist as such, there are bands I see regularly where the bass player is also a guitarist in an other band, those bassists are often better players than the full time bassists in plenty of other bands. If you are playing bass you are a bassist, when you are playing guitar you are a guitarist, if you play drums you are ....(insert your own joke)..a drummer, the only difference is your own ability on each which has no effect on other peoples ability does it? I can play a little bit of drums and I mean a little bit but there will be a spoilt brat collecting his pearl export from a shop today who has never played a beat, by the rules of basschat he is a drummer and im a bassist on our primary instruments but who is the better drummer at the moment?
22. Nice mod, I swapped my preamp and was worried about resale values but I have no issue with what you have done, looks a neat job and a cool bass, white and tort I think these are the most subtle looking five string basses, takes a good look to realise it has an extra string! Good luck with the sale, might be best to tell us where you are?
23. The bongo looks epic, I prefer it with a normal neck, if we can call it normal
24. Good question, I dont know. The skylines are already nice, I nearly had a dj5 but it was back my days of saying "if four strings are good enough for...".
