1. I can understand setups not being to taste but im surprised a bass builder would put them like that, as long as the bass is good though as you say you can put it right.
2. I really want one you know, might need to sell a stingray first though
3. Not me although he can and does play better than me, so did the guy in the band before who wrote and played his whole album other than the slap bass I played on it and some violin his dad played. Deck him
4. The lakland 55-94 and now the new 55-14 appeal to me with the mm and J neck pickups but with a pan front the neck and split rear/front/MM selector for the humbucker makes it a proper versatile machine imo.
5. The 33 is a lot of bass for money....but...personally I'd rather have a better built hybrid for the same price, as a general guide but not always fully carved will sound better on its own but not make much difference in a band setting, carved tend to suffer feedback more than hybrids, hybrids tend to suffer more than ply basses. Ply basses can normally take a bit more abuse and the thing that would concern me on a brand new budget carved bass would be splits and joints opening up within the first few years. Each bass will sound very different due to loads of variables, sound post position, strings, bridge placement, construction etc. It was because of that I wanted a bass with adjustable bridge and ebony board so it can always be set up properly in future. Probably more confused than before now? Lol
6. Just get one that splits, I see no reason why it wont sound like a regular j pup, that said without the p it wont well, sound like a p.
7. Ah ok, thats why I ignor the words "professional setup" in for sale threads
8.
Limelight 1960 Stack-Knob Jazz Bass Just in case there's still someone who hasn't seen or heard this... This is what it sounds like ...and, some pics:
Very tilted?
9.
Go on then, I'll play :-) my '64 lightly relic'd precision with jazz profile neck. More info here: http://basschat.co.u..._limelight%2064
Why are the bridge saddles tilted on most of these? Anyone that says to follow the neck curve needs a slap btw
10. It arrived yesterday, I taped it to the fingerboard and put some foam behind it to stop it drooping! I really like it I have had a fiddle with the piezo into the aux in and the schaller into the input and blending them and that works well to but last night I just plugged it into a desk channel, adjusted the EQ a bit and away we went. For what I am doing on it it is OK on its own really, it will give me confidence to gig the DB which in turn will give me a better chance of setting the piezo up or maybe a troll mic or something later. I just need to fit it properly and adjust the pole pieces up before putting some thread lock on them, I think I like it enough to drill the little screws into the board as I can always fill them with black saw dust and wood glue if need be later, Hhhm. Here is a pic of it out last night but not me playing it, my mate who lent me the stingray copy took the pics of his bass in action but you can see the pickup, I played loads of DB last night and I could hear myself I am looking at a scribbled chart for Amy winehouse's you know I am no good
11. I cant fault my Gedo nor the service from the company, looking at many of these similar threads it really is a 2 horse race between Gedo and Thomann's various offerings from the entry level up to about the £1500 range, I have no idea where you would start after that!
12. And from the buyers point of view what are we losing for a grand? a fancy top in a colour I did not want and nothing else, no cheap electronics, not made in another factory, not a cheaper neck? no brainer! Oh dear I can feel an arguement with the wife getting closer
13. No one who is earning a living, not trying to earn a living, wannabe rock star, is doing pay to play. If you are trying to get an originals band off the ground losing a few quid to get a foot in the door is OK IMO, unless you make it big the cost of gear (not that kind of gear ), travel, practice room, recording, stage clothes etc etc etc etc will never be recovered anyway. If you are a covers band as many of us here are regardless of being a pro or not you should be paid something even if its £50 and a plate of sandwiches. We do a little open jam night about once a month, it is a tiny hotel lounge we do it for £60 between 3 of us but I take very little stuff with me and its fun, all I took last night was DB its stand and a lead, it not far away and is basically a free practice for us, we pick up the odd gig from it and it is where I see many of my friends. Now the LL there is not going to put on JTUKs band for £750+ (they would not fit you all in anyway ;p ), so we are not taking away a potential gig from anyone other than someone prepared to do the same as us, my other function bands I would not gig there with but I know I have come home from this little jam happier than many wedding gigs with a pocket full of dosh. In a way for me the function gigs pay for my gear to be able to play the jam sessions
14.
I almost bought one a while ago, the most comfortable 35" scale 5 string bass that I have ever played.
The 55-94 is a great high end bass that looks more subtle than most coffee table gear, I presume these new ones will be just the same, they have the exact same quarter sawn necks.
15.
It's a 55-02 by a new name, surely?
The 55-02 is the budget version of the usa built 55-94, these new models are the same as a 55-94 but just a more limited range of finishes, other than that they are a £3.5k bass for £2.3k.
16. Fretemiester has an nxt I believe Geoff, much posher than my old stagg I'm really looking forward to the bash.
17. I just paid the Ebay buy it now price and a week later in arrived
18.
No. If I'm brutally honest with myself I wasn't born to be a musician of any kind.
Nor me, I am not a natural at all compared to many players.
19. I started on guitar and was very average, but rather than the failed guitarist we are often known as I think it was because I was drawn to the bass, even when I bought a good guitar at the age of about 15 I still played the Avon SG bass when jamming with my mates, which was a very accurate copy of an SG bass and therfore terrible I find most bass players are frustrated drummers as we have an understanding of what goes where so we can often knock up a shed or two.
20.
I'm loving these lessons. I'm an EUB virgin (I know it's not a real DB, but I can't fit a real one in the house) and the stuff about hand positioning has already made playing so much easier.
I started on the Stagg and still use it live, all of the lessons transfer well to EUB or DB and are still a must for EUB to play it properly, blagging finger per fret will only get you so far then you get tied in a knot! I know, I tried it, Lol.
