1. I am currently using the Stagg which kind of sounds like a fretless bass anyway, so at least I will get to use the proper DB live even if it sounds similar to the Stagg, the Stagg has the piezo transducer but no body to resonate hence the fretless bass sound I guess, at least this way I can mix a little K&K in to taste or if I can get it right 90% piezo for example, the more I use it the better I will get at setting it up, in the house the sound bounces around and feeds back quite easily, if I have my bridge altered I will get them to fit the K&K where and how they think best, it is in the treble side at the moment as it was so boomy even with the preamp cutting the lows when installed on the bass side.
2. I cant beleive it is my old one, it looks lotally different with the black pg! There is a pre EB porn thread too Foxx
3. I fear the terrible sounds already come from it even when un amplified
4. I need to start keeping tabs on all these basses, my other one has come back on here now and I have already forgot who has it! I know I will want them all back one day
5. Actually this band is the most quiet ever! Electric drums, 3 piece band, guitarist doesnt even use an amp, although it is blues and rock etc. I just want a plug and play solution almost like a regular bass, I have already asked Jake to spend half an hour of one of my lessons setting up my fishman in the near future to see where I am going wrong amybe over time and once I have gigged it more I will blend the mag out and rely on the piezo but I feel like I will be spending far too long messing about right now to be able to gig it, certainly at quick turnaround slots like tomorrows beer festival thing. What sort of sound can I expect from the Schaller, terrible?
6.
We don't get asked to lend our bass; it's a fretless sixer. Odd, no..?
Even my fretted fives keep most oiks at bay I was asked at a jam a few weeks ago if someone could lend my bass at a little acoustic style jam, "yeah sure its that big violin looking thing at the back" funnily enough they declined that too, fussy buggers.
7. Have you got my old baby Foxx? 82 white pickguard sounds like it, old horse murphy in the mix somewhere? That is the best pre EB I have ever played if it is!
8. http://www.touchston...ick-up-738.aspx Came in at just under £70 inc the P&P, used ones are selling for about the same on eBay? I know there are better mag pickups out there but I just want to be heard without too much feedback so I can get gigging the DB,I have looked all over for a used Krivo or new UK stock of anything else, Thomann do the Schaller for £91 plus postage so I decided to grab this for £20 less. I had a great stage to have used a DB last night but I went with the EUB because of the feedback issues, I am hoping this coupled with my K&K and Fishman into my fx return to add a bit of 'something' should get me close enough?
9. I bet we are the only ones in the band that think of these things! We have elctric drums, the guitarist uses a variax and a di box with a 4x12 simulator built in and no amp, he also uses a Godin synth with a midi unit into the desk, I have an EUB and if I also go into the pa we will have plenty of room on stage thats for sure!
10. I see what you are saying chris, The only snag I can see is that I am doubling, what is good for the goose might not be good for the gander in my own monitor mix, I could ask for a mix for the upright in the monitor then a different one for the elec bass and take my own amp for the elec bass too which would make extra work for everyone, Lol
11. It is a tricky one because you know there is a really good used bass out there for the money in question but where? You could drive miles to get nothing much better than what you have or the bloke up the road might be selling a £2000 new bass used in good nick for £900. I gave up and spent about a grand on a Gedo which I presume would be better than your current bass and other lower budget basses, G4M or low end Thomann budget basses. I went for a hybrid with a carved front and a real ebony board and adjustable bridge with the hope that I will not be in your boat as and when it needs work or my playing improves to a point where the bass needs tweaking as it should worth a pro setup and be able to take fingerboard work etc. As a noob I dont really know what to expect from a bass and I am looking forward to the DB Bash at Derby to try a few nicer basses to see what I am missing, Jake Newman certainly makes mine sound good and has given it a clean bill of health as is with Spiro weichs and my bridge adjustments for now, I suspect with no more than say £100 having the bridge feet shaped better and the sound post positioning perfectly it could be a belter for £1100
12.
Went ampless for the first time in ages a couple of weeks ago. Was okay, but not as good IMHO. Can't teach an old dog etc....
And then my doubts return, Lol
13.
I did this with an acoustic blues and ragtime duo on several festivals and the monitor was fine. The PA guys (they had their own stage sound man) were great. I always carried my rig just in case. It stayed in the car.
Thats what I am thinking, if I was to take my 1x12 again I can slip the shuttle 6.0 head out for the Di, TBH I dont even need that do I but it will give me some tone if I try post EQ which I never do normally.
14.
If you were struggling to hear your intonation before, I certainly wouldn't go ampless this time. The only time I'll happily go ampless is if I'm using in ears.
It was my own fault though Paul, I should have adjusted my amp which was behind me to suit the tone/volume of the EUB, but I could have just asked for some bass in my own wedge instead which I did not think of until after, it was not terrible but I could have used a bit more volume.
15. We are playing a beer festival tomorrow and the PA system is mega and operated by one of the guys from the Take That tour, we did it in May and I just took my 1x12 shuttle 6.0 Genz combo, I was struggling to hear my intonation on upright bass so I am thinking of ditching the amp and using my Genz 3.0 as a Di box into the desk and having a good monitor mix instead, we are a fairly quiet trio with Jobecky electric drums (the ones that look like a drum kit) so I dont have any drum sound behind me which is weird if you have never tried it! Am I brave enough?
16. Just remember no one will understand how much trouble you have gone to, I always make sure I thank the sound/lights crew even if the gig was crap (unless it was their fault, very rarely) as I appreciate how much work goes into these things, we have a nice slot at a beer festival on sunday that has got better as we have gon.e from 1pm then to 3pm and now we are the 6pm-8pm slot which should be a good one looking at many previous doos there, that is in part due to the organisers knowing we are not tossers with loads of demands and stuff. The best thing about that gig is that we dont need to drag all our gear there, play and drag it all home, They have an excellent pa and lighting rig and 2 pro guys working it for 3 days solid! I might not even take an amp and just have a Di to the expensive monitor wedge
17. I am sure it will go well as you have clearly given it some thought and preparation
18.
Ironwood
My mate does wood turning, that stuff is heavy and only good for seriously heavy metal!
19. Is it good for metal though? Would you need metalwood trees instead?
20. Oooh yes I'd try a big Al version of an sbmm. Jtuk only plays fender copies anyway
21.
Stop it Pete, you've got me thinking. I started on DB as a teen, maybe I should try an EUB as an arthritic old git. Oh hell, I can feel the " there's a thought" building up. (Wonders off to for sale threads).
Have a peek in the double bass section on here, you will be ready to explode with gas, for us with knackered wrists it's medicinal really
