1. Thanks again everyone, Raslee I will pm you, thanks It was because of the note duration I fancied looking at the dots and for a general bit of reggae improvement. What are these neck pickups you speak of? treble off, bass boosted, foam mutes engaged on the classicRay, thumb near the neck and I'm away!
2. Ah you have a Sterling Sterling then, lol. If you want a stingray tone then a basslines or similar will work (didn't flea use them in something?) And a John east preamp for certain, check out his site! A used genuine USA Sterling pickup would be good if you can find one on Ebay or a Bartolini version maybe?
3. Is this between USA sterlings and USA stingrays or stingrays and the cheaper Sterling version?
4. Thanks guys, I think I probably have been over playing when jamming reggae stuff so the sparse playing is something I need to keep in my head

6. Just seen them on the guitar guitar site, I have concidered getting a 55-94 if one comes up used but these are the same as used 55-94 money new and not skyline range. Hhmm credit card on the ready.....
7.
Ha ha, a bit like me and the EUB experience at recent bass bashes. Never thought I could possibly play such an instrument, but now I'd really like one. Maybe next year...
The best thing that came from breaking my wrist was taking up the eub then the DB, do it!
8. I was anti 5 strings when I joined basschat, now look at me!
9. I have a sort of audition in 2 weeks, first one in 20 years as I have always been asked if I will play for bands rather than be auditioned . I know quite a bit of the set, certainly enough for the one hour session booked but they have requested a reggae number if I have time to learn one as the last bassist could not cut them, truth is I have not gone down that path much really, Buffalo Soldier and Three little birds are in the set list sent over so I thought I should nail at least one if not both, fail to prepare and prepare to fail and all that, although my playing skills have got me the call they want to make sure I am not a cock more than anything so that could be a problem I have jammed along to the track and found bits of notation which tidied it up but I would like the whole track in fly sh*t if anyone has it? or 3 little birds. Any general Reggae tips that will help when blagging reggae would be useful too?, Thanks
10. Sounds like he created his own TT supply regardless of the mains incomer type which is cool if you know what you are doing but not so much if you dont.
11. If you get the EQ set just right you should be able to use the treble pot like you would a tone pot on a P bass off for reggae, a little bit when using a pick, bit more for funky disco etc.
12. One of the best deep down and solid supporting the band sounds I can think of is done on a Ray, Cliff Williams AC/DC
13.
Now, when I see and hear a MM in a band... they tend to get it all wrong, IMO.
My sh*t playing is far more of a concern than the tone of my basses
14. Steelers wheel was the first song I learnt playing across the board on a five string for a dep gig, thank feck I did too because they changed the key on the night! So much easier playing the E on the B string and so much easier to change keys on the fly hence I will never go back to 4 strings now.
15. They don't even have the bloody make written on them! Even if you get a peek in the F hole all you get is a brand possibly. At least they all look great
16. Funnily enough I use an Ibanez 505 most Tuesdays at practice, I like it even with it's thin neck profile, the SR5 feels less chunky than the four string basses and the classic is flat like a pre eb. My old 82 stingray had a very slim neck almost like a Les Paul guitar!
17. Which is why a clean di to the desk from a stingray is killer with a full pa, nice cutting sound on stage to hear yourself big fat sound out front, as long as the engineer doesn't try and replicate the sound you have dialled in on your own amp!
18. I've tried to love them, I loaned one and gigged it, but it tipped up all night, I looked at others, they had razor sharp metal work, add a rubber ring they all said, so I looked again and the next few had sharp fret ends and crap binding or the finish was bleeding into the bindings, pah I give up
19.
I've got a few Stingrays and my 80s EB is just a great bass to play I've had from new and it's all beat up but it's fantastic and very versatile. My fretless from the 90s is very a good bass and it's potentially my sh*t fretless playing but it doesn't feel quite the same though it looks beautiful. The pre-EB is a different beast but I love playing it and it sounds tremendous. I had an SR5 and I just couldn't get on with it, it was really, really heavy and I found it to be just to full on and aggressive sounding but I'd really like to try the classic 5 string. Dunno if this adds to the conversation but I suppose there are variations in models. I've never really had a fender for any length of time and really didn't like the last one I had but I wouldn't discount buying one if it felt right.
As someone who has owned two pre eb basses I can confirm that the classic five is as near to a pre eb as you will find with a B string, alnico pickup, same eq, strung thru bridge, finished neck, it's all there but with the six bolt neck and wheel of fortune truss rod adjuster Most SR5s out there are ceramic pickup loaded and with the 3eq preamp and pickup selector you can see why people can find them different, my 2007 is a very late ceramic one and I love it now, you won't find a bass that can cut an on stage mix like it, sometimes it might not be the sound you want but at least you can be heard where a jazz would have been swallowed leaving you playing around trying to find the right amount of each pickup, I say this as a jazz bass liker and user, the ceramic in series is just a beast!
20. The style and sound of Ricks I quite like actually, the neck dive and shoddy build quality less so
21. The silhouette is just the same as strat and most guitars that use a loaded pick guard design, give a strat a tap between the pickups and down to the pots and you can hear that it's hollow, the silo and other makes like Ibanez offer HSH HSS or SSS pickup configurations so they need to remove wood from both sides of the outer pickups, part of the beauty of that is people can and do swap pickup types and brands just by swapping the pick guard.
