1. Serious answer is they are like the other 1000 j copies from Encore to Alleva Coppolo, some are amazing for tuppence and some are amazing for £3500, others are awful for £90 and some arent a lot better for thousands more, all you can do is try them out ime.
2. Well bonfire night will be here in just a few months
3. First things first is it a proper SGC nanyo Bass Collection or a later p or j bass replica job? If its the former they are the bargain of the century with the best build quality you will find equally matching basses in the £1-2000 range. Really light and comfy, good hardware, nice woods, good preamps.
4. Yes I bet them strings will help it sing, the ones on it were clean enough but probably 4 years old.
5. It could be the best bargain ever or expensive firewood! As long as its all there you probably cant lose, have you got any pictures of it etc, like your boyfriend I have played bass for years but only double bass for 18 months and it really is like starting out all over again! The double bass section on this site is really friendly so make sure you send him this way. Im having lessons on a casual basis with Jake Newman from this site (got one tomorrow!) and following Geoffs discover double bass lessons on youtube (also a member here), they are the best on there by miles! Back to bass...hmm...if its an ebay chinese one some are totally unplayable and a waste of cash which leaves other budget options of; Gear4music which get mixed feelings often can be made to play ok but costing a lot to get them to a decent level. Thomann do a range of basses with the better ones being reported as pretty good for the money and certainly playable. GedoMusik do a range too but I think there budget ones are more than entry level thomann ones, quite a few of us here have Gedos, myself included after much looking went for a mid level one as I wanted one I could grow into. Gedo are german but they reply to emails quickly in good English and have shown great service with only one faulty bass I know of on here where the problem was resolved quickly and to the customers satisfaction. Good luck with the search and lucky him!
6. Im bored with p and j though, I like that tele!
7. http://www.guitar-list.com/allgear Scroll down to the Ms and start googling
8. Have you took the rear panel off, I presume it has a cover on the back to get at the wiring?
9. Just to keep the De Gamba (?) style going then here is mine, it is a 2013 Gedo Musik 3/4, half carved with solid spruce top, ebony fingerboard, tirolean tuners, I had an adjustable bridge and Spiro weichs fitted by the factory in Germany, the actual bass is Romanian I think? ply ones being Chinese, half being Romanian and the full carved being Czech?. After a lot of research this make model and final spec upgrades were a good comprimise between price and having a bass I could grow into as a noobie. It has a K&K bassmax fitted at the moment, badly by me I must add but I think I am going to have a full set up with nut filing, bridge feet shaped, general tinker and ask for the K&K to be fitted as well as it can and in the best position in their opinion
10. I am looking forward to the Derby double bass day to see how everyone elses basses feel compared to mine, I think I want to go lower too but I am not certain yet hopefully the bass day will provide me with some inspiration
11. Well the Classics all look the bollox anyway so I can always play one of my regular ones as I look at it on the hangar I have just emailed to get some info, lets see who has the oldest
12. Yes a clear guard would work well, nice to see they have gone to the trouble of a proper route around the pickup too
13. Blimey another Sandberg QC thread and another total stinker of a bass never mind the even more of a stinker you sent back and looking at the other Sandberg thread probably got sold on to someone else! I am not Sandberg bashing but they need to sort this out really quickly or we will see another interesting bass maker go to the wall
14. Its not a bad Stingray impression on that baby blue one with the HS pickups, I like it Is there a 5 string version?
15.
This is one reason why I've stopped playing covers and now only play songs that I've had a hand in writing. All the songs and their baselines are now completely awesome IMO.
I was playing in an originals band a few years ago and as much as I loved playing my own lines or my version of what the artist had written in some cases I have found there is a point where I want to play to more than the usual pub full of mates, small local following and a few uninterested punters unless its a genre specific event even then the crowd numbers were often much lower than a packed wedding gig, looking at your youtube content etc I would say the band I was in was of a similar size popularity wise and I did enjoy recording and playing some good events but they were too few for me, on the other hand playing the same set for ten years to uninterested wedding guests is hard too, I have done both on and off since I was 17,Lol. I am aiming for somewhere in the middle in the future 1 or 2 gigs a month with a varied set list
16. Ha I just read ALL of that faq only to see the bit at the bottom saying what I put at the start of post #6
17. All the experts will say is use your ears not your eyes! I run a 4 ohm 600watt 2x12 off a 300watt, 600 watt or 900 watt head with no problems, likewise ive ran my 1x12 off my 900watt head without problems. Farting and distorting are the tell tale signs which is why the experts say mixing cabs is not best practice unless you know they work together, a good 4x10 might mask the sound of a 1x15 being ruined, you wont know until the next time you run the 15 on its own and wonder why it has built in overdrive!lol
18. Is the conflicting advice you have seen been regarding valve amps? They need to be matched to cabs of the correct ohmage and power handling that Howie described about solid state amps, a head rated at 8 ohms needs an 8 ohm load for example where a solid state amp could be rated at 8 ohms yet run a 16 ohm cab all day just with a reduced output. Some amps are switchable as are some cabs so you must make sure they are compatible and on the correct settings if you have say a pair of 16 ohm 4x10 cabs for massive gigs then use just one cab at your next gig the head will need to be switched from 8 ohms to 16 ohms. Valve amps are not my specialist area as im too lazy to carry them but I think I am correct in my description ?
19.
…just fell asleep reading this post.
We do chasing cars, I usually play it one handed and have a drink, check my text messages and stuff
20. I think my classic is an early one too, not checked the serial though, does is have to be done through the ebmm forum still? Dont you think the sealed finish helps a little or do you think the higher grade maple is what keeps them stable?
