The misery stick is a whole new ball game, lol.

OK I suppose I should put my money where my mouth is I am not that familiar with the song and only spent 10 mins getting this version together, If it was in our band set I could get the fills and bits much better but it gives an idea of what is what, the fact the E string is still an E brings the notes back nearer the nut compared to playing it on a 4 string, some people forget this and think of trying to combine the worst aspects of moth 4 and 5 strings. Sorry for the method of recording, galaxy phone to photobucket, Lol http://s997.photobucket.com/user/stingraypete/media/20140729_172014_zpslvaadf4v.mp4.html You can see my wrist is mashed, thats as far as it bends now since breaking my arm/wrist, you can also see my double bass fingering so for anyone with a good wrist and not spent hours trying to get a double bass to sound in tune should be able to nail it on a five easy IMO

I have a serious addiction but I try and ration them, had two so far
Blimey Pete, you weren't lying! I don't know whether to be besotted with her or hate her Playing the double bass with such ease AND singing! What a talent. *goes and sits in a corner feeling rubbish*
Crazy ain't it, it's very hard to get motivated on DB because every clip is like that, orchestral stuff I try to not even accept that it exists, lol. Glad you enjoyed it, have you checked out her fretless electric bass playing?
-
Ah man I'm glad you are happy with it! And thanks from me to ebs freak for the tip off of the mystery drink
I understand the scientific aspects of what we are discussing fine thanks. However, some members on here may not have had the opportunity to gather this knowledge through experience/education and rely on this forum for information. What you said was 'we can't hear down to 45hz' which is factually incorrect.
the nonsense you just posted about the fives being pointless unless you amplify those frequencies will confuse people more What amps have you got then and what are the cut off frequencies set at?
-
See I knew some one would explain it better, thanks Roland Even with the LF boost the Genz amps cut at about 37hz By can't hear I mean musically, great if you can hear/feel some vibrations when sat in isolation with head phones on that's no use to us at a gig.
Sorry man but this just doesn't make sense. You own 3 five strings and you're saying you can't hear below 45hz in a mix? The frequency of a bottom E on a 4 string bass (if tuned correctly) is 41hz. The low B on a 5/6 string bass (if tuned correctly) rings out at 30.868hz (let's say 31hz for ease), so you're essentially saying that your low B string is totally redundant in a mix. If that's the case, why did you bother buying 3 five strings basses if you can't hear below an F (approx 45hz) in a mix...
Someone who knows more about this should be able to explain but it doesn't work at all how you are understanding it, musical notes are more dimensional than that, the Genz amp cuts below 80hz for example unless you engage LF boost, but trust me it still produces sounds when you play a low B, what you are left with is the parts we hear as clear and defined rather than a farty rumble. Can anyone help explain it for me, I presume it involves the fundamental frequency and it's under tones?

I'm not certain how accurate the tab on the net is but my version on the five would be passable I reckon, I tried it an octave up on double bass now too, tricky but just doable, just....I wouldn't be able to keep it up for the songs duration but then again it wouldn't be easy on DB with dropped D either!
-
what was the first number you gigged on a bass ?
stingrayPete1977 replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
My first ever performance was 'Surf in Usa' at school around 1992 my first proper gig was an originals band around 1999, my first proper covers gig would have been something like 'Black Night' in a blues rock band around 2003ish. -
-
Yep I totally get you and like I said im contradicting myself too as a five string player rather than drop tuning, but I can also see/hear when the flappy E sounds killer, queens of the stone age as mentioned earlier for example.

I have one more charity gig booked for September (guide dogs which I am happy to support) but it will be my last and I have made it very clear to the others in the band
I sold my 5 string as I didn't get on with it with my small girl hands. Drop tuning to D on the other hand is a quick joy!
Prepare for a lesbian crush and an example of small hands on a chunkier neck than the chunkiest five string then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xbHWp1KfSE

The one that got away and the one best shut of...
stingrayPete1977 replied to interpol52's topic in General Discussion
1. My bass collection SB320 trans green, worth three times what they sell for these days imo. 2. I actually managed to not buy it in the first place but I think it counts as I tried to like it on a long term loan or return, 1978 fireglo Ricky, awful bass that had every ricky stereotype nailed! -
There are many other songs I cant play with 4 or 5 strings though, lol
-
I have become more cynical of where it goes more than what they take, charity starts at home now for me, I have done loads of free gigs and provided gear for others, as they say on dragons den, "I'm out"
I've got a five string too. Try playing Velvet Revolver's Slither on a five string
Out of curiosity I just did, I found the tab and transposed all the showboating from the open D to 10th fret on the detuned D string across the BEA strings of a fiver and its just the minor 3rd to major 3rd that pulls you out of position a fraction Doddy would sight read it!
Personally I still haven't come across an E-string that would still feel right dropped to D without being too stiff when tuned to E. If I really have to use drop D I'd have another bass with an appropriately heavier string for the low D. (This is what I do with my guitars where I use a 52 for E and a 56 for drop D.)
I will play devils advocate and go against my own earlier post and say that in some cases, mainly the ones discussed in this thread part of the point is the timbre of the flappy E string, your idea of the bass playing as it should when tuned to D by the use of a different gauge string would defeat the object of the whole sound some people are going for, these songs were and are still being written on a detuned E string rather than a state of the art bass strung specially for two numbers at a gig requiring multiple basses to be taken too, would you 4 string pioneers agree with that? I have never found a song requiring the need to drop my E on a five string yet and the times it is easier on five far out weigh the reverse, I am not pointing the finger at anyone here as I think most of you look like you understand but some people cant get there head around the notes that are far away when in drop D will not be so far when playing a 5 with correct positional fingering because we still have the E where it should be so the original notes fall to hand, where anyone tries to think of really tricky songs to catch us out they forget we can go across as you would on a B strung 4 string or up as you would on an standard tuned 4 string.

Genuinely worn basses are cool, faked ones tend to be bought by men of a certain age wealthy enough to buy a fake, too tight to buy the real thing or realised the real things are often awful basses
-
I've got a five string too. Try playing Velvet Revolver's Slither on a five string
I'm sure it can be done
-
What is this drop tuning to access a low D you speak of?
-
Thats my German bow that does not get used and i can confirm that my bow playing is just as bad with the French bow not in shot! The room is north facing so only a bit of sun comes in plus it has a wooden slat blind too, the back bedroom on the other hand managed to age my strat neck within a few weeks to a nice honey colour
-
I still dont see the need for taming the beast either? Nate Watts, John Deacon, Bernard Edwards and Louis Johnson just embraced it. When you do want it the imposters fall flat every time! A 2 eq Ray at full tilt sitting in a live band setting is a thing of beauty
-
If they made a 5 string Grabber I'd sell a Ray 5 to buy it
