1.
I always assumed you were referring to a '77 Stingray.
No, a 79 was as near as I got to a yob Stingray.
2.
I think we can all buy whatever we want, I don't think anyone needs to earn the right to play an expensive bass and you dont outgrow an inexpensive bass.
I know a few players that would not be able to pull off their best licks even on my Rays, id disagree that you cant outgrow an inexpensive bass, thankfully for my wallet my own skills are more Encore P bass than Fodera
3. I'm going the other way, thinking of leaving my amp at home and just using the pa
4. Sorry it was a bit of an in joke if you were aware of the gear ebs freak uses you would have got, I presume Luke was with me How do you get the Ashdown sounds into the in ears then?
5. I don't buy into the idea of fancy gear being used by poor players, most people I know first hand with high end gear are great players, plenty more sh*t players playing sh*t gear out there IMO
6. I like many others used to use two basses at a gig most weekends, one was a Ray of sorts £1350 minimum to £2000 ish depending on which one and at which time, the other was my Bitsa Jazz that I sold on here a while ago just because I only play 5 strings now, it was worth a fraction of the Ray but it did 50% of the gig every time, it was (is?) a great bass
7. I love Brizzle, If I did not live here on Button Moon I would move there full time
8. Thats it, im not saying you should spend it on a bass but I am firmly planning to spend disposable income on toys, for some that could mean a squier P and a set of fancy golf racquets for example. Note the disposable though
9. I dont think he has £4 earphones.....
10. One of my work colleagues dropped down dead last week, he was 52, I have no concept of religion or afterlife etc, I came home that day and booked a holiday, I dont need a holiday as ive just been, I dont need 3 stingrays either.
11.
The other side is, one of my most stunning looking and amazing playing/sounding basses is a Musicman Classic 5....it was not cheap...and they have risen to around £1900+.... I think its worth every penny.
12. I had lunch on the grain barge a few months ago, I presume its still there.
13. Milton keynes bowl 1993, I was 15, best gig yet, the sound was epic.
14. I was thinking P basses? I love them, get all gassed up, try one or gig one and the gas is gone for another couple of years. I only gassed for a rick once, had one on loan for a while, gigged it and put that gas in a box with a tamper proof seal on it
15. I never bought anything after the black album
16. Metallica have made some great records, im not sure large festivals are the way to introduce people to your stuff, they never do a band justice (for all )imo. I always enjoy a band more if I know how the song goes to fill in the blanks of a poor mix when watching tv or at the venue regarding massive shows like that. Metallica metallica is brilliant from start to finish both musically and production wise, ok you might not like them Dingus but so many proper die hard music fans cant be wrong
17. I didnt know about the thekla, I had a very heavy night on there before the last refurb!
18. Dolly Parton's set "well practiced" is probably the best place to leave the whole miming topic
19. 20.
maybe music is different from Art but if you right something don't you own it regardless of what you do (or part of it in a band). Proving it is another thing - but say you do something with these songs and some old bass player comes out the woodwork and can prove they wrote say the melody to the song... well then it's his melody. There's a load of stuff of my old band on iTunes/Spotify which I had to sit down with them and discuss who wrote what of everything - not a fun process!
Without some form of copyright how can he prove it though, if that were the case why would anyone bother to copyright it in the first place? Some form of demo with a printed label giving the band member names etc, dated and kept in an unopened envelope with a royal mail stamp would be absolute minimum required for anyone to even try and make a financial claim afaik. I have some stuff that is proper copyrighted under licence via the company that pressed the discs, it was free for a non commercial act at the time up to a maximum number of discs. That was before the days of youtube and mp3 players etc so I have no idea how you can protect stuff now, nor do the massive bands that are trying to stop it.
21. The Louisiana used to be the best place for that sort of gig http://www.thelouisiana.net/ There is also the old duke but its more Jazz based stuff, bit of a hippy dippy hang out, I love it! http://www.theoldduke.co.uk/ The Thekla is really cool too, if you dont know it it is an old cargo ship in the dock that is an indie club/live venue http://www.theklabristol.co.uk/
22. I would say if nothing was kept copyrighted at the time you could do what you want with them, thats why you want to do it and copyright them now I presume just in case they hit the big time? If so you have kind of answered your own question I think? If the singer still speaks to the previous members then maybe they should discuss his new band recording their songs but legally I cant see you have an issue if you recorded them and made fame and fortune especially if the singer wrote the lyrics rather than me just nicking your ideas and releasing it for example? It might be worth giving them a thank you mention in the sleeve but then does that leave the door a jar at a later date I dont know?
23. I'm fairly competent at setting up basses but I have hit a wall with mine so any improvement will only come from a professional. I have got my e string down to about 10mm and the bridge is well centred other than that it needs pro work. Unlike electric bass you might have a slope on the end of the finger board too so advice can only be taken so far compared to setting up a P bass for example, more knowledgeable folk here can explain the finger board curve.
24.
lol Pete. I did play a fretless on a couple of tracks.. not the same I know.. I guess I could of played up the intonation a bit more
Lol
