Is it worth paying nearly twice as much just for the name on the headstock?! I guess to some people it would be, but more importantly it's just another factor weigh up when trying choose between the two. If someone really felt that the 'ray was as good as it gets for them and nothing else will touch it, then it's worth it I guess.
I was playing devils advocate by suggesting the cheaper version to show that you could flip the cost argument by going for the cheaper ray version or even go for a SUB at a fraction of the price. Some people are into resale values too (im not) so a well bought Ray ie £999 with no case not long ago at some shops for a 2 band in limited colour choices kept mint would sell on for at least 3/4 of that if its a concern.

The Killers: All These Things.... chords at the end?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
Ha what are you guys like?! -
I think only men that have the choice of a stingray or a similar bass that choose the other one fall into that....camp?

As its my imaginary invention though I have made it 900 watts at 2 ohm so it could run four 2x12 cabs
Just had a quick look on Thomann for comparisons sake, and the cheapest MM 'ray 4 3-band i can see is £1328.64 (most seem to be quite a bit more than this), and the cheapest Basic 4 is £767.10 (although there is a B-stock for £686.05). You could probably add chargeable custom options to a Basic order and still come in a fair bit cheaper than a stock 'ray!
Or get a sterling ray 34 then, brand name is always going to cost more im affraid even if the item is comparable.
My lighthearted comment that didn't offend anyone has been removed! What's happening to this place. (it was a Simpson's quote btw, good enough for sky 1 but inappropriate here it seems)
I quoted it so its still there in spirit
Having owned and heavily gigged and played the EBMM stingray, the older SUBs, EBMM sterling and the Sandberg basic. I have to say that the differences between them all are minimal and in mix it's even less noticable, unless the bass is expectionally loud in the mix. Even passive mode the Sandberg sounds very spot on. I did change how the sandbergs pickup is weird though to get even closer to that sound but mainly to get rid of the low mid hump. My vote goes for the Sterling though as it's coil tapped sound is awesome and it's a sound I want back, but the Sandberg is very very very well made and the zero fret I wish was on as standard on every bass.
My black SR5 is ceramic, and 3 band with a selector switch which gets it into the sterling range of tones, its my favourite base overall even after I searched around to get my alnico sr5 new in 2010.
For me sandberg necks are far superior.
Obviously not felt a Classicray neck then
@dave - what kinda sounds do you get? I would like to be able to get a warm tube tone and a nice rock tone. Currently use a gsllien 1001rbii as my main amp am a tech 21 vt pre am into the effects return for an ampeg like tone. I am also thinking if the shuttle max with 2 x swr golight 112s
One thing that really trumps the 6.2 ,12.2 or 9.2 for me is the max head because the FET channel is really good imo, I bought my 9.2max just to get the tone of my 3.0 (no valve in that one) but with the full 900 watts of either a 9.0 or 9.2 head. Its a shame they never combined the two to give you the flexibility of Daves rig but with the power and twin channels of the max head, it would have been the 18.2 shuttlemax!

Theres only about a dozen of us on basschat from what I can see! -
It's the pre-amp rather than the pickup which colours the sound on a Stingray. Put a Stingray pickup in a Sandberg, and it still won't sound like a Stingray.
I have said before that you could bolt a stingray neck to a piece of wood, maybe an old table top, put the pickup and the preamp on it and it will sound like a stingray but you need both which you could do easily enough to the sandberg. Lakland is a better alternative imo.
I don't get the "a stingrays sound cant be replicated" thing ? If a company wished to make a pickup the same as the MM then surely there is no secret recipe ?
Doesn't work at all without the fairly basic preamp though.

There is actually a Genz porn thread that i started you know.
That may be so but i really couldn't justify buying one with my (lack of) talent. Yes i have. Very entertaining,
I sold one of my pre eb stingrays to fund mine, hardly played an electric bass since!
-
I'm not saying your gay if you don't buy a Stingray but people who don't buy Stingrays generally like to please other men. Hope I have been of some assistance.
Haha he's not wrong!
-
You dont need any talent to buy one, as I found out! Have you watched the isle of man great double bass race documentary on you tube?
-
Gary Karr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxqkJTjSw7U
Gary Karr clips on you tube was the final bit of inspiration before ordering my Gedo, love him!
Shuttlemax 12.2 here. I "upgraded" from the GBE750 so my opinion is a bit skewed but; I have never played through an amp that is so versatile a doesn't resort to gimmicky effects to get there. I run it through a 112 berg or 2 x 112 bergs or a 212 berg or all of them! With all the speaker configurations I have available it's loud, clear and warm. Never tried the EA stuff so I can't comment on that but I'd say that there isn't a better amp (for me) then then Genz.
That's one of the best and most versatile rigs i have heard of anyone having on bass chat, brilliant!
It's not always a cheat to alter tuning - as long as you still know where the notes are. Devin Townsend always tunes to an Open Major chord as it allows access to voicing that would be impossible on regular tuning because of stretch length. But he still knows every note he's playing! (and bloody hell he's good!)
I agree but tuning the guitar to C or using a plastic grip shaped like a chord is a cheat, the books that come with those things just use a fret number, i imagine disco numbers with lots of octaves are not popular!
-
My son's mate lives with us. He's "played" guitar for 10 years. He has a large repertoire of songs he plays. The guitar is tuned to drop C, so for a lot of numbers he bridges all the strings with 1 finger and strums as he moves the finger up and down the FB. The others are all learned with tabs. I was going to play a bass line with him the other day. I asked what key he was playing in.... blank look. Can he find a C on the FB.... no. There are 1000's of players the same I'm sure. .But are they guitarists REALLY?
Thats how those guitar pro things work I beleive but there is no need to detune the guitar as its preshaped into a major bar chord, some people just like a quick result, unfortunately those cheats lead to an almost impossible transition to actually playing.
Get the Genz whilst its on offer!
Correct
-
Ah, OK..
3.0 is fet only, 9.2 max heads have both channels like two amps in one box and they are blendable, epic!
