1. Everyones ears are tuned differently and the frequencies they want are different too, quite a few people shifted the barefaced cabs on for either a Genz neox or some form of bergantino because they were too muddy and couldn't get the top end zing, maybe the top end zing is at the expense of the mid so people requiring more mid will prefer the barefaced cabs, equally anyone using a more mid focused bass or an active one might prefer something else.
2.
Very possibly!!!!! Lol. I don't get out much but I'm sure all EBMMs are 4 over 1, and Fenders are either 5 in line (neck dive??!!) or 4 over 1. When I first saw a Lakland with 3 over 2 on the tele back in the early 90s, pre internet and pre much bass info being widely around, I thought it was a new Musicman so similar was the headstock concept!! I guess I was thinking fender/musicman style headstock rather than the Warwick/Spector/Wal pattern!!!
Im surprised g and l doesnt spring to your mind?
3. Loads of fives infact most are 3&2? Are you having a moment drT I recall someone saying they will only buy fives that are 2&3 as it gives more space and wood around the B and E tuners yet they are not very common with most I see being 3&2 or just 5 in a row instead. Smith being the only one off the top of my head from the none one off custom stuff.
4.
Patenting the 3+1 headstock is absolutely ridiculous. That's like patenting vowels. Patenting body shapes and to a lesser extent headstock shapes is fine but this honestly takes the cake. Poo. It has made me a little bit furious actually. Looks like I'm never going to buy an EBMM for the rest of my life now. Petty, but I have principles! Its not as if the 3+1 is EB's only USP. Their basses have tons of futuristic things that make them awesome, their biggest being their 'Game Changer' system. I'm going to copyright/patent tuning pegs altogether for a laugh and sue everyone's arses off; give EB a taste of their own medicine.
I think most brands will have some kind of copyrite that sounds daft, the ebmm one isnt a new thing and afaik basschat has not been told to remove any for sale posts with any old basses with 3+1 tuners?
5. It is an often overlooked aspect, quite a few people with rays went to genz years ago with the shuttles, then more people went genz with the streamliners but Rays and genz gear appear to match each other for some reason and other basses tend to match other gear. The 3 band stingray in either single coil mode or series with the shuttlemax 900watt head into a genz 2x12t cab is about as cutting as you could ever get ime. A passive jazz with both pups on, fx and a different head is a whole new ball game. One thing I would say is if you dont like it move it on,lifes too short
6.
Don't for a moment think that Fender and Gibson wouldn't be trying to stop copies of their classic instruments if they could. However they did too little and left it too late when it counted and now have to make the best of the consequences.
Which id say is a massive increase in sales of not only lusted after 'proper' fenders but all the cheaper mex and squier versions too,not a bad situation for them to deal with that Ric haven't.
7.
Why would I need one on a British road? Oh I get it..... it's a pisstake, yes?
Correct.
8. Ive got to the point where as long as I can hear something behind me im happy, id use an ashdown rig again if someone else provided it at every gig, I used a trace commando combo for a few gigs that the singer provided to save me taking mine. Im lazy
9. As someone who plays with a lefty drummer we normally get "we will see if we have time at the end for a quick soundcheck" never have yet but heres hoping!
10.
Yeah. So these "bargains" may only be so to the people who dig their sounds...
This is a fact from martin lewis and one worth remembering, its only ever a bargain if you were going to buy one anyway. If someone offered me a Ricky for a grand it might be bargain if I sold it on for a possible profit but I could spend a grand on something I need/want/like and remove the might/if out of the purchase.
11. I have always bought gear to use, possibly to destruction, I paid £800 for mine but that was years ago so its already paid for itself. The problem for me is not really ethical, its the fact its from a defunct range of gear. Over time that wont matter but in the short term there will be a stigma im certain.
12. "We do the songs exactly as the record like we said in the email with the set list, well we do them in different keys and tempos, and that song you know the one where we make a medley from 8 other songs we do that with a reggae feel".
13. Im not sure how anyone will sell them for more than they paid, they are not on special offer and going back up to £780 after, they are discontinued end of line stock. Id say 3/4 of whatever the fender branded ones retail for will be the most anyone will get for a mint one, that could be £600 if the fender ones are £800 but fender might sell them for £400 yet or not make any at all, who knows?
14.
You sure about that? http://www.lefthandedpiano.com/ or how about this... http://www.lefthande...o.com/midi.html Been around for a while too - check out the date on this article: http://news.bbc.co.u...i/uk/178608.stm I used to get really annoyed about comments like this. I'm a bit more chilled about it these days - just wish people would think it through and try to understand the notion of handedness a bit better is all. But then if you're right-handed the chances are you've never needed to. Tell you what; here's a wiki article that might help. I found the section headed 'Social stigma and repression of Left-handedness' quite interesting.... http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Handedness
Have you get a left hand drive car?
15. Maybe its a matter of who makes the application first, history is littered with so called inventors of stuff that did not but are the most high profile.
16. Sets the pup cover and selector knob off nicely I think, it was fretless with leds too, proper bitsa but the best of the three, go figure
17. Fitted a black gloss 3 ply but with the white pup, I love it.
18. My 2007 was black and pearl, awful.
19.
I don't have neck dive on my 4003. I find it very balanced out. You may not have played to many Gibson Basses. Gibsons are the definition of Neck Dive of Death.
Yep I love the look of gibson basses but again neckdive and poor bridge designs ruin a great bass.
20. You cant say they are flawed dingus, all subjective apparently
21. Just go to ebmm (bass direct will get you one) if its the same size, they are cheaper than the replica ones on ebay?!
22.
So your issue with neck dive (obviously subjective given I've never experienced it), body shape/contouring, binding etc are actual faults? I think not. The fingerboard issue is a fault but neck/fingerboard issues are hardly unique to Rics are they? My first Wal (lauded for their build quality) hadn't had the fingerboard levelled properly. Even the "big, clumsy bridge" is a matter of opinion, and it's not like Rays have never had those is it? ;-)
I still disagree, profiles are subjective, poor quality bindings with the finish bleeding into them are faults as is the neck dive every ric I have tried had, you are obviously lucky to have never encountered that problem but enough people on here have for it to be classed as a possible thing to look for if it bothers you. Again the fingerboard is not subjective, it didnt fit the neck from the factory nor is a bridge often cited as difficult or impossible to setup as required, hows that a subjective thing?
23.
Pete, I have to take issue on some of your points - and I'm sorry your Classic Ray was a disappointment sonically - they're generally very good But I get your point!!
Im just pointing out actual faults rather than things that are subjective, they are faults experienced by some people mostly corrected over time.
24.
I tried a rickenbacker today for the first time. I wasn't blown away but I also had no problem with the body... thinking about it.... when I'm playing my arm doesn't ever touch the body on most basses..... how does that happen - I find it impossible to even play touching the body without putting a kink in my wrist.
everyone has a different style and strap height, everyones arms not the same length, playing with the thumb up by the neck joint for example.
