Great stuff. Jakes the man!
I will still be learning from your site Geoff, in fact we started from your walking bass lines print out just to show Jake how good (terrible) my reading is -
Awesome !! What books are you working from?!
I have been working from the Rufus Reid book for a while, Jake could tell exactly where i was up to ability wise already and the things he has showed me should help me progress both more quickly and maybe more importantly with a much better technique. -
The fet channel on the 9.2 max is brilliant too, that's something the streamliner hadn't got, all the Genz heads have a place even the 3.0 is a great head as a super tiny spare with a di too.
-
You wont beat a genz contour combo right now imo, crazy bargains!

As promised by Jake (jakenewmanbass) ages ago he said if he was coming this way he would let me know so I could get a proper lesson, he did and he has given me one (two hours) Lots to practice but it was just what I needed, no one had tried my bass or my bow other than other electric bass players so it was a nice start when they both passed Jakes test, onto standing and supporting the bass where he has got me balancing the bass better which no matter how many clips I had watched I couldnt fine tune it, arm weight and finger spacing/hand shape, various note stops and then shifting in quite a few ways leading to some fairly complex slides etc. Finished with some bow technique so I finally now how to hold the damn thing! If I take my time and apply all the little bits he has taught me im sure they will add up to a big step forward, over to me to practice now. Thanks again Jake, really good way to spend an evening
And there's your market. "Hey guys, I bought this early 60s Fender...sits on my wall for me to gawp at." And that's the reality for most of these basses that are bought. Funny you say, "But it won't be that great a car to drive by today's standards" - I know many Classic Car enthusiasts that love their cars because they don't drive to the standards of todays, safe, unexciting in comparison, cars.
You called! omg a new bmw would bore me to tears compared to my modest classics I have now never mind a classic ferrari, as you know our 12 month old golf used to sit on the drive so I could take the morris to band practice everyweek
NX2-212T - £379 - WOW!!!
Anyone thinking of buying a cab or even two if they have a two ohm head should be all over that, you wont beat it and I dont think the used market will suffer too much, why would anyone sell theirs cheap in a year when you wont be able to buy a new one and it will still be a match for £1000 cab from an other brand. Fender have been dealing with the warranty for years and still are but as I understand it arent fender in trouble anyway, surely thats more of a worry for the bass playing community?
-
Ive never bought into amps as investments in the same way as basses, my neox 2x12t and shuttle 6.0 I started with have earnt their keep with 4 years of trouble free function band duties, I only paid £530 for my shuttlemax9.2 off ebay in as new condition when I was ready to put £1000 on a 0% credit card for a new one, I even got the fancy carry case with it too. I also bought my 3.0 used and my neox 1x12t came from a bc member, to sum up I have a lot of genz gear that owes me nothing really so im still very happy
-
You wont beat genz gear for value right now, them combos everywhere are selling off are brilliant, its the only time id say buy new over a used amp from here for a similar budget.
-
I dont know what some people do with all their power? I run a shuttlemax 9.2 head into a 4ohm 2x12, stingray with bass boosted and plenty of erb notes yet I can easily run my shuttle 3.0 into that cab and play a gig with that as the only backline, in fact the bigger the venue the less power I have needed due to the bigger pa and monitoring.

Forget Me Nots pretty much note for note...

Subscribed as they say!

The tall and narrow config on the genz (and similar) cabs makes them alot easier to move than a 4x10 but id agree that if you are going up and down stairs all the time then a pair might be best, I've never needed to push my 2x12 very hard so even if there is a small advantage of a single cab over the pair they should still be good for most gigs, bassdirect pilgrimage required
-
A good 2x12 will be better than an average 4x10 imo and ime, the only problem is that im still not convinced that 2 1x12s are as good as a 2x12. Sure the maths say that they should be and alex barefaced says identicle boxes times 2 will be the same but they are not identicle as you have two dirty great pieces of plywood between them. Id love to try a pair of 1x12 neox t genz cabs next to my single 2x12 neox t cab.
I also have a Hercules. Hercules products in general are simply fantastic. My first double bass stand was by Italian company, Proel - Big mistake, that purchase. Awful design, and poor quality. The Hercules does take up a fair bit of room, as the design of the stand means your bass is angled quite far back, so you have to have the stand positioned a fair way out from a wall to keep the head of your bass from making contact with a wall, but the product quality is second-to-none.
My bass has a fairly curved back so although it sits up tall in the stand it wants to slip backwards which as you say means pulling the stand quite far from the corner, but, I have used a chunk of foam (good old Stagg packing foam ) to put behind the scroll so I have got the bass tucked back as far as possible into the corner

Yep! Genz are being shut down by fender but they are still honouring the 2 year warranty, the guts are almost certainly going to appear in a fender branded range of amps soon so its not like they have gone bankrupt or anything, just a tactical business move.
-
Honestly i would have exploded if I'd had an amp like that at fifteen!
-
If i was buying an amp now in that price range and from what you have said it would be a Genz Benz contour combo, you won't get better for £300 and you can add a cab if you need to later, i played through one at a jam night a few Weeks ago and it was brilliant on it's own, get one!
-
be careful what you wish for Fender fanbois, if you kick up too much fuss they will probably add a few more and sell them at a premium as lightweight deluxe versions or something!
Though i dont gig ive been using a hercules stand. nice wide footprint and small outriggers but no way of securing the bass to the stand. its rather weighty and dont fold up much past in half size.
Same here, the bow hanger is a nice touch too, although it only folds in half I find its nice and flat so it can be put underneath all my other gear or even slid on top as its quite thin when folded.

New Youtube Double Bass Lessons
stingrayPete1977 replied to geoffbassist's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Another great lesson Geoff, thanks. -
I didnt like stingrays at all, big clumsy, wide necked lumps. Went to buy a warwick with £1400 in my pocket in 2002, the warwick was faulty from the factory, tried a Ric, horrible in every way other than looks, and tried some more Rays just to double check they were as bad as I remembered from the last time.....owned 6 since

Already culled mine
The prices are mental for DB strings. I don't know anything about string construction other than the martketing bits of hex core and round core etc (I have no idea why that is important) - but other than being a bit longer and needing a bit more material - how on earth are DB strings so much more expensive? Is it just a volume thing that the margins have to be higher because of less sales? Or do they really cost loads more to make? How long do DB strings last anyway?
On recommendation of fellow bc members I have fitted spirocores to my db and eub, £300! But they reckon ten years to be possible, we will see. Its a really expensive addiction lots of db players have trying out string types and tensions.
I'm the opposite, massively enjoying everything and new opportunities presenting themselves all the time.
I have always found getting gigs quite easy (not always good gigs) and im sure one facebook update would get me a gig within a week, im just not really feeling it. I have a wrist injury that is looking like I will be permanantly not as good as I was, that could cause me a problem if any local bands that know me find that im not as good as they remember seeing me with other local acts
