How do you stop your lightweight amp from wandering off?
stingrayPete1977 replied to a topic in General Discussion
The genz carpet finish not looking so daft now eh -
I have had this on lots of basses especially new ones, the earth behind the bridge sinks into the soft paint, peel it out clean it and move it to a fresh area before screwing the bridge on tightly and its gone. Why and how it hums I will leave to the experts but all I know is I have had that exact problem 3 times at least!
Don't you just hate it when a bass is fine for weeks then suddenly overnight the shielding lacks.
Actual lol moment!

Just copied this from facebook, I don't agree that it was a bad gig and the comments about brum are true, for me that's what grunge was about, they said the same of Seattle later. Simon Woodey Just returned from the most unprofessional gig I have seen in a long time. Went to see Soundgarden and for 75 minutes it was all hunky dory. Chris's voice was great, crowd were into it and then it all started going wrong. First Chris introduced a song by saying we only play this when we are in bleak English towns like this one (nice). Then Ben Shepherd had a problem with his bass amp. He had a look at his monitor, then went back to his amp, fiddled with it still wasn't happy so knocked it over. Then went and smashed the neck of his bass into one of the stage lights, threw it on the floor and walked off!The others carried on for two songs and then went off. Came back once they had replaced the amp and played a couple more but Ben just stood there with this really sh*tty look on his face. To use an English phrase, 'He looked like a Bulldog chewing a wasp.' Because of the delay they cut the encore short, we didn't get 'Outshined' and we knew it was coming because we saw the setlist.Ben just threw his bass again, Matt the drummer walked off, and Chris and Kim just layed their axes down and f***ed around with the distortion for about four minutes, just making noise. Totally unprofessional in my view, suck it up and play Ben Shepherd you spoiled dick! No thank you's, no goodnight, they just walked off leaving the guitars screaming on the stage. Grow up boys, we payed £40 to listen to you play and you f***ed us over.Arseholes!Like · 3 · Today at 2:01am

Can anyone help with this? Frustrated :(
Let's find out, do you have a string vest I can borrow?
I can chuck in the black SR5 if it helps? -
When Skunk Anansie played at Brighton Dome earlier this year Cass' bass rig was having issues, again an all-valve head with mic'ed cab. However he DOES DI before the amp as well so despite him having a gig he's probably rather forget he just got on with it and the sound out front was still awesome
I love Cass!
It's odd, I thought the usual thing in pro sound would be to run a DI before the amp in addition to miking the speaker. Surely if they'd been doing that, the sound guys could have turned up the DI fader to FOH and put some in the sidefills within seconds of the amp going down? I wonder if the Soundgarden bassist is one of these guys who is unusually insistent about not having a DI there at all?
Its all a bit odd isn't it? Lets see if that p bass ends up on here or ebay too
I was there, was a fair bit off to the side about halfway down the crowd though so didn't get a brilliant view of what was going on (other than having a face like thunder on him for the last few numbers then throwing his bass over his shoulder and storming off at the end).
I enjoyed the gig overall did you? Do you agree the bass had better clarity after they gave up on the ampegs? The guy with the ricky in the support band didnt cut through much where we were stood either so maybe some engineer/venue fail too?

The green one looks like my old one!
Thought they'd have got on with a direct DI then sorted the rig after ? Ok, we are not soundgarden, but i did a dep gig with a rock band at a small festival, and one of the guitarists new expensive blackstar amp failed, its very frustrating.
They swapped to faulty Ampeg number two first, then another hissy fit, eventually came out for the encores which sounded like into the desk to me and much clearer than it had all night, lots of drive from a pedal of some sort, juicy!
What will happen with GB amps still in warranty? Will it still be honoured?
I have owned my Genz gear for years, it was owned by Fender back then, I see no difference other than the label, I am sure we will see a glut of small Fender heads over the next few years and to be honest knowing Fender fanbois they will sell well and end the myths of small heads? Warranty claims have afaik always gone through Fender anyway so I see no issues at all, none of mine have warranty left anyway
But surely if your using an Ampeg at least half the point is the sound of the valves? Therefore it would make little sense to DI before the amp.
Come on your just being a pedant, you know that at a gig like that the crew could just mic the cab and mix it in or in this case boost the Di until the head was swapped between songs. Best of both worlds, see what happens if you dont!
Hmmm... sounds like a rigging fail....and wonder if the crew got the bass back..??? If you are going to have two amps up, then have two amps UP. But I guess the moral of the story is.... if Ampeg, get 3...!!
I didnt see it get passed back and I was quite close, I actually took a picture of them playing with no bassist for this at the time imaginary thread but no point really is there with that clip? Funny if it had been handed to Big Red X, he would have given it back, bloody P bass,

Anyone else see the drama at the Soundgarden gig last night? I had a scoot on youtube amazed to actually find the moment Ben gave his P bass away, Lol. For non fans the amp went as they started their most popular song Rusty cage only for it to go sh*t shaped for Jesus Christ Pose a joint classic that most of the crowd were waiting for! I have a feeling there is a sound guy with an Ampeg sized lump after insertion of at least one of the faulty heads up his anus, yep second head lasted all of a song. Anyone get a clearer view of what went wrong was it actually both heads or a faulty lead/pedal etc? either way he was having trouble a few songs earlier when I think most of us here would have wanted the spare head putting on between songs with a fresh set of leads just to be certain. Not a happy bunny by all accounts and he had the best sound for the last few songs once by the sounds of things they routed his pedals into the desk which as many of you know I have been touting as the best method for many years, all this my sound mic'd 1x10 cack can and does lead to giving away nice P basses

Out the factory neck shims: Are they common?
stingrayPete1977 replied to MisterFingers's topic in Bass Guitars
The problem is stemming from the neck not being straight from the end of where the truss rod is effective to the heel end of the neck. A good through neck has that problem resolved as part of the build almost like a built in shim at the heel area by calculating the stresses and strains before the bass is even built, you could even put a longer truss rod in so adjustments can be made over a longer area of the playing area. -

By tilting the neck you are moving the problem to the best place for it. -
And you can show this by tilting the whole drawing of the bass at the same angle as you adjusted the neck due to the shim. Then by lowering the bridge you can get the string back to the same relation to the length of the neck as you would have had by shimming it. The only difference would be the angle between the string and the front of the body.
By tilting from the neck pocket you are keeping the correct string to body angle at 90 degrees and passing over the pickups evenly too, lowering it your way on a Jazz would mean the bridge pickup would need screwing in further, on a Stingray the strings would pass over the poles at a funny angle.
