1. Some of those 70s fenders are crazy, I can't imagine a fifteen pound bass! My black stingray is probably towards twelve.
2.
Time. I can't even commit to one band, let alone two. I spend SO much time with people at work that I just can't take any more. I play at home to help to shut that out. When I've been in bands, I haven't found it to be particularly pleasurable business. Too many egos. In the other hand, creating new music is great. And delivering a good performance- live, in a studio or in rehearsal is great, too. When you add a financial aspect to it, especially if some members are dependent upon the income, it becomes a nightmare. Enjoyment, then. Except I don't enjoy it.
Time is precious so if a band has made time to rehearse and give up their evening for a gig that's even more reason to pay them imo. I suppose it depends what the gig is, you can enjoy knocking out covers if the audience are enjoying it too, I'd play good gigs for free but a tough one can only be eased by cash for me It doesn't sound like you are into it on any level right now?
3. Another one in the baptist church here, £5 an hour! None of us are religious but someone was looking down on us when we found it at that price
4. I don't see why it has to be so divided? Function band gig with a professional set up and performance then you get paid, originals band in the back room at the pub getting your creative juices flowing the next night you don't.I don't get paid for jamming at home.
5. A 3/4 upright that folds down to the size of a briefcase and has no feedback issues even at full volume and sounds imense would be nice.
6.
Exactly. There's no "should" involved, as implied by the topic's All sorts of people have all sorts of interests and unless they are truly professional (in the sense of earning a living) they spend a lot of their spare time and spare cash pursuing those interests. I've never really understood why musicians feel the need to earn money from their playing in order to pay for their gear when, for example, sailors, divers, cyclists, runners, climbers, etc etc rarely feel the need to earn money from their interests in order to justify spending time and money. Perhaps it's because many musicians are secretly playing 'rock god' and believe that their 'fans' should shower them with a rich and famous lifestyle, just like their own idols?
What if you went to the NEC to watch a diving/cycling/running/climbing show with live performances, should they be paid? Obviously if they did it all at the same time it would be worth paying to see
7. I have done enough gigs for the drummers girlfriends next door neighbour for free type gigs, when I joined the current band we were all in agreement that the freebies for mates and family would be kept to a minimum or not at all if possible although I am doing a freebie tonight! No pa or lights to set up and only a 45mins to an hour slot so not too bad. I have never auditioned for a band and never been without one so I am not about to start doing covers for free, original material is a whole new thread though IMO
8. You know what, I'm not! I'm trying to use it unsupported, that's another thing on my things to think about while playing. Ta again
9. Thanks Geoff that's cool I'm with you there, I am struggling for strength in my pinky right up near the heel so I have been using my third finger as a sort of beginning of thumb position, probably running before I can jump, lol. Back from tonights practice, I have just managed the 4 notes per bar including the High Fs and the slides down from the C to Bb and the F on the A string to the C, if I'm doing it right? I couldn't read two years ago now I'm getting frustrated at the parts I can't sight read because im needing to look at the neck for the bigger shifts! I'm ok at 100bpm on the two notes per bar but dropping to 80 for the four notes version.
10. If the two guitarists both using the rehearsal room marshall stacks tell you not to worry as they will have their 'big amps' on the night walk away quickly!
11. Back on topic I have just watched the new lesson in todays email, lots of work for me there regarding shifting. My walking is improving after spending half an hour each night with the metronome and the pages I printed from the toolbox, I think I might be ready for the harder version now! Quite satisfying once I nailed the F on the g string! Which finger is best for that shift Geoff? Ta
12. I don't think people (the majority) want change, loads of brands have made stuff technically 'better' but we all know what the most popular basses are. I had a early Peavey Foundation bass as my first bass, it played better than every mim fender I have tried.
13. Yeah needs a natural or light colour body, Tony Levin olp stingray looks good imo.
14. I'm pretty sure you could just flip the bridge and file the nut on the stagg? The forearm rest is in the wrong place and only for thumb position anyway, the body rest I like and use but its just two threads which two nuts glued into the body would solve no problem, I don't think I have missed anything? As for being like a db then I think the stagg is actually much more like a db than something like an NS which feel much more like a fretless bass on end to me although they are obviously much higher quality instruments.
15. I was exactly the same Marc, I'm starting to think I prefer playing upright to elec bass, my next band will probably be an upright only gig I reckon but I'm glad I can fit it into my current covers band, in fact I'm squeezing more and more songs onto the upright where possible. Shame its normally stagg live but it just works plus everything I'm learning on db is easier on eub. I have been watching Geoffs youtube lessons and I am really starting to play proper upright style on the stagg rather than elec bass style the more I practice on db at home. Fingers crossed something comes up soon for you.
16. Maybe you could borrow Steve's outfit for your next youtube lesson Geoff? I have just been practising walking bassline lesson 1 Geoff (printed from the toolbox), I am even getting the high F in the two feel at about 100bpm but I need to slow it down to progress with the 4 notes per bar bit, I have even bought a new metronome!
