1. Actually just heard the madonna cover on the radio and the bass sounded better than on the tv, still not Ray good but much better
2. I had to do my electric upright, few quid on ebay and it is silent now, never had much trouble being a Stingray guy but the little church we have started using for practice has got strip lights that my classic ray did not like.
3.
Just caught it on iPlayer, tight as a gnats chuff, but its crying out for a 2EQ 'Ray...
Correctamundo.
4.
If it helps I'm kind of gassing for a Musicman at the moment. Although I've used them before I've never owned one. I'd have to find the right one though due to my various physical issues.
That's why I just got rid of my pre eb ray and why old horse Murphy needed to get shut of his classic 5! I guess we all have or own needs and wants
5. Yep, plentiful, familiar, does the job well with a version for everyone That does not meen we should all drive one though, how dull would that be?
6.
Just like Mr Ford's Model T enabled the masses to buy a car. Though you don't see many of those around now, do you..?
But a big portion are still in existence but maybe locked away, others have been modified to various extents from minor things like removing bits through to total pimped out versions and the company continue to offer a viable modern day version, sound familiar? The only difference was that the P bass has needed little or no modification where the model T has evolved through the Pop, Prefect, Anglia and Escort to become the Focus so maybe Leo did get it right in the first place?
7. You know what I hated CAR as they call it and they did a nice dark bluey/purple but had none left, it had a white scratchplate but as soon as I fitted the genuine Fender black one it looked 100% better IMO
8.
+1. I love that if you have a different opinion there's obviously something wrong with you.
Just me and you by the sounds of things, they will have to put us on a desert island where you can try and get me to start liking these Ricky basses
9. Looks like chambered is your best option then
10. Well its a tricky bass to put a price on, I was just having a play on it actually. It cost me nearly double the advert price to build it but I know that is neither here nor there, on the other hand I would rather keep it as a good (excellent) jam night bass or rough pub gig bass, the only reason I am selling it is because I am having a clear out of 5 string basses. If I sold the bits one at a time I think I would be in the £200+ region (have you seen the price and UK availability of genuine Leo Quan Badass bridges?) I will pm you my very best price
11. The modded Squier Jazz I am selling is about 4.3kg, it is also awesome
12. I was assured by the folks on here that I could get 10 years out of my Spiros, as I have a set on my EUB and my DB I will wait for 20
13. Funnily enough I was just playing with the pickup height, I decided to wait until next weeks practice and fiddle about when I can compare it in the mix.
14. I know but I was using it as an example of how the bottom end thumps the track along, Rays do that better than any other bass live IMO, thats why old 8th note thumpers like me use them
15. Yes and no The black SR5 is really easy to get in the mix and if that fails you can switch into series or single coil mode and beleive me if you cant get it to cut through with the 3 band EQ and in series mode no other bass is going to anyway, the overall sound is not as big as my old pre EB either. On the other hand it looks ace and the neck is lovely and it has that early Stingray sound mucj more like a proper 2 EQ Ray of 70's and 80's era, a bit more trumpety I always think as a way to describe it, think Chic or early Rage Against The Machine. I will see how I get on with it and maybe put a John east pre into it to see if that boosts it up a bit, everyone else that has done that has been pretty happy with the results saying it has completed the pre EB makeover. It is the nicest EBMM bass I have ever seen though and the fit and finish is up there with the best of anything I have ever tried up to £4k.
16. 3.12 is where its at....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTusMLs9SJE
17.
Can't understand what people can't hear as it is all THERE, IMO.
The bottom end and the clarity of the fills...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KUL9-eNXzQ
18. Not really mate but I am open to sensible offers and you are not too far away from me either
19.
What? You couldn't FEEL him? Loved his line on We Are Family...the timing of each note was impeccable...
I just watched the clip and it reminded me of why I dont like Flea on a Jazz live either, it always leaves me thinking how much bigger yet just as defined on the slap/treble notes it would be. Flea is my hero but I hate his live sound generally for the same reasons. The groove was quite Chilis in the clip too IMO, I know Nile did it first but I felt a bit of a full circle of funk right there band name maybe.....hhmm circle of funk....
20. Can I just be clear a moment the guys playing was awesome! in no way am I slating his playing, I just wish he played a Ray so I could fecking hear him in the mix
21. I know I am biased but without the Ray it just felt empty, nothing thumps on the 'one' like a Stingray which is what holds the whole Chic show together, Le Freak sounded crap without the 'Bum Bum' behind the vocals IMO. The thing a Ray has like no other is the ability to cut through with the high end like last nights Jazz did but retain an fat meaty bottom end to keep the groove going the rest of the time, never heard another bass that can do both, To me there is almost one sound on the E&A strings then another on the D&G, work your lines around that like Bernard did and you have the lot
22. My beloved old pre EB has gone due to its lack of B string, the closest thing possible was this
