1. If it's technical advice only then I know many players who are much more technical than many famous players, some of them members here, some of them pro anyway but not famous. Some of the best bass players I know are not even bass players as their first instrument.
2.
They normally go for around £700 on eBay. My mate got his for £680. They are good functional studio basses but they look way too '80s for gigging.
Yes that's why no one plays fenders as they look too 50's or 60's for gigging, no one plays normal stingrays as they look to 70's......oh hang on they make up most of the gigging basses don't they?
3. Just looked at the poll results and I'm going to aim for right in the middle of the two most common results 6mm G 8mm E, who is Joe Zinkan?
4.
I owned a SR5 a while back and it was hands down in the top 3 best basses ive ever owned. nice slim neck, the best build quality you could wish for and THE best B string ive ever played. its one of the classic basses of all of time. imo
I think they play better than they look you know, I wish the SR5 had started out like the new Classic 5 but they are becoming the classic fiver now I think, still see lots of pro players in mega high profile gigs playing them by choice.
5.
The first time I ever did a gig with a sound guy we were gob smacked & didn't know what to say to him (we were used to our own disorganised volume wars) So I sat with him & explained we need his advice & he set us up so well we sounded better than the main band.....After the gig I was having a beer with him & he let me know that the main act were stompy rock star types.....he made us sound better because we asked him for his help & advice. I've always gone out of my way ever since to be nice to the sound guys. I've never met a bad one yet
I find this works with most walks of life, building inspectors love it if you leave an area unfinished because you're waiting for his/her advice on a lintel or something, I guess we all enjoy our jobs more if we feel appreciated including sound crew, door staff, bar staff etc
6.
I would contend that you are actually far more likely to have your amp fail on you than most basses , but very few non - pros have a back -up amp .
I have actually gone from taking a spare bass (another Stingray naturally) to taking a spare head unless it was a wedding gig then I still take a spare bass, Shuttle 3.0 as spare to Shuttle 6.0, Shuttle 6.0 as spare to Shuttlemax9.2
7. I'm only thinking about knocking the edge off it, as it stands having an adjustable bridge is pointless too as its minimum height is at the highest you would ever want the strings already, If the front of the bass swells by a few mm at some point then I would have to do it anyway.
8.
Got the Tort guard that came with it too , best of both worlds !
9. I have already done the nut and its not too bad up that end, quite a lot of tension at the plucking end though.
10. Well I'm only looking for about two mm and I can raise it back up on the wheels if it buzzes too much, I will have a play on Saturday, thanks guys
11. Teal and maple is the best combination, I don't really play my other 4 string basses though so I have no idea why I want it back!
12. What string height should I aim for do you think? Watching bill haley clips and those strings really do move around!
13. I was hoping to take a few mm off the area next to adjusting wheels rather than from the profile of the bridge and having to re cut string slots?
14. People get upset about remarks about guitarists yet we have all met so many that do these things to earn the reputation, just like drummers that never stop f***ing drumming between songs etc!
15. Ok folks my action is set at about 7mm on the G rising to 10mm on the E, my bridge is adjustable but its set as low as possible, I have spirocore weichs but its still quite hard work compared to my stagg with the same strings fitted. Should I shave a bit off the bridge and if so does the material need to be removed from the bridge or the feet? (not the bottom of the feet, I know), and what height should I go for, I'm playing all sorts from moondance (sorry) to bill haley numbers, thanks in advance as ever
16. Not really because we still chuck sex on fire in at the end like everyone else
17. Bargain, get a pre eb one instead?
18.
Oh , yeah ? Try playing death metal ragga hip hop fusion on one and you will find it sorely lacking in certain areas .
We only play new age southern bluegrass death metal ragga hip hop rather than fusion so its not an issue
19. That buttercream is epic, I'd have a tort guard on it myself but that is easy and a personal thing.
20. I want to buy my old teal stingray back but I don't know who has it? I'm thinking that if I wait long enough Marcus will own it at some point and I can jump in and get it back!
21.
Could I not interest sir in a little "I told you so"?
Go on then, told you so! They are just proper basses that cover all genres IMO.
