1. No need to tell me mate
2.
Can you get these fine tuners for DB? The link you provided has them for violin/viola/cello but not DB. You can't change the pitch of a string by changing the length of string beyond the bridge or beyond the nut. You can change the pitch by changing the tension in the string by using a tuner (which winds the string or pulls the string tighter) at either end - nut or bridge. Now the fine tuner can operate by winding the string or straight pulling the string with a lever (and looking at them that is how many work) but it is not the length of the string past the nut or bridge that matters.
Yes they are fitted to db too, the problem is that they will be fighting the tuning of the bass on the speaking length so it looks like a bitch to get right, once bang on with your choice of strings and bridge fitted where you want for overall tone you can measure each string length after the bridge and have a tail carved to that exact shape to remove the need for tuners, you can see why db setups are not for novices!
3. If you know the 500watt cab sounds ok with the betas then you could load the other cab with the same knowing they will work then get the Genz 12.2 head (not everyone here will realise it has two 600watt amps built in), I doubt the claimed 600watt will trouble a 500 watt cab but the existing one will be held back by the 300 watt one at the moment. What is struggling at the moment the head or cabs?
4. Been reading up and the fine tuners are for tuning the after bridge string length! No idea why, so much db learning to do.
5. Then altering the length of string behind the bridge has altered the tension?
6. Anyway I don't think my level of db playing will improve much with or without one! looking at various listing by different makers some talk of tuning, others compliance or tension so maybe its more of a term issue than an actual issue?
7.
Although I am too cack handed to notice any difference in compliance myself (it's definitely not a difference in tension) I am willing to accept that someone might notice a difference - in compliance. However, the difference in compliance from moving plucking fingers nearer or further away from the bridge is much much greater than any imaginable difference from string-through-body so I don't at all understand why anyone would be bothered one way or the other.
No it didnt bother me, they were both ace!
8. If this does not affect tension only compliance how can it alter the tuning? http://www.thestringzone.co.uk/thomastik-violin-tailpiece-with-integrated-fine-tuners
9. I set up the two stingrays as identicle as I could (using feeler gauges) eb 40-100 strings and I am sure 99 percent of bass players would have said the strung through had more tension (ok maybe we would be wrong scientifically) but if the strings felt more taught when tuned on the same tuner what can you say? Still interesting how the db fine tuners work, a year ago I would have laughed them off as rubbish!
10. Just read the link and its good, very interesting.
11. There are too many terms and not enough ways to describe things but it still affects tone, double basses can be fitted with fine tuners fitted on the tail piece which only alters tension (length or whatever way you want to describe the difference it will make) between the rear of the bridge and the tail rather than moving the saddle on a standard bridge.
12. Its not even that simple because any string length before the bridge saddles and after the nut still make a huge difference, my strung thru pre eb had much more tension than my top loaded one for example.
13. No pics no bass
14.
You should ask the pub if you can see a copy of their electrical installation condition report, and ask if they have it done at the recommended 3 yearly interval...
This answer comes up every time someone asks about pat certs, if the venue has either buildings insurance or a local authority entertainments licence it almost certainly will, sure the guys on here acting the big shot because the Saturday night girl didn't know if the venue did or not sound cool on here but in reality why would the staff know? The electricians will have carried out the tests for the owner (not tenant) so the boss of the venue might not even know about it, you will still look a Dick when they produce it one day
15. Nope Ashdown combo with matching extension cab and a Peavey TNT combo before that, its also why I only run separates these days.
16. Never blown a driver, had numerous amp failures.
17. Nice looking cab that Berg, as they always are
18.
Why not just carry a decent bass DI, so if any or all of your amps go down, you can go through the PA? Not ideal for onstage sound purposes, but a quick fix - and cheaper and lighter than lugging extra amps around.
I used to agree with this but with new small heads not much bigger than a di box yet still equipped with one anyone if you are already going into the desk will give you power to your cabs, a used gk200 won't cost much and will fit in your gigbag, also good for practice rooms with ok cabs but crap heads.
19. I was tempted but mine is blank, I can't help but look at the stagg ones even though they are not bang on.
20.
Hang on, I'm a bass player, why am I changing the sound from indistinct low endy thump?
Slap?
21. I have a Genz 300 watt head, a Genz 600 watt head and a twin channel 900 watt Genz head (second channel setup for db), I have a 1x10 cab, a 1x12 cab and a 2x12 cab. Can't think of many gigs I can't cover with a combination of that gear and I can carry all three heads and the 2x12 in one lift!
22. Thomann use that size box for half a dozen plectrums and a pack of strings on the other hand Ashdown cabs sound like they are still in the box! How does it sound?
23.
That would be great, thanks. I'd be particularly interested in lowering the action - I guess filing nut and the bridge slots to get them even is a good starting point. Two other things make themselves apparent - a 'quacking' on or about the F on the D string (is that an Fing quack?) and a wobbly hip brace that the pietzo picks up. Easy fixes?
Just realised its in this thread, page 5
