Love Potion Number 9 (take your choice of versions), any early Cash, Just can't get enough (Depeche Mode). If you think your set list is eclectic you should see the twenty-four songs we're working on with the ukelele group (five of your songs are on the list). Have fun Steve
Thanks I will have a listen -

I know the version its on my list of songs too! -
I had a very similar mind set as the OP, i was a 4 string only player and didn't really have a care or a reason to try a 5string. I eventually started toying around with them in music stores and found one i bonded with (there's not many out there that's nice to play!!). I found playing 5 string over the last 18months has improved my overall playing and approach to bass guitar, as also fretless playing has. It's helped me overcome the plateau i was on playing just a 4string fretted bass alone.
All of this reflects my own story!

Just had a quick scan on ebay for the first time in a while, not that many about is there? Looks like they have bottomed out at the current prices and anyone who has one is just hanging onto it for now. I think you will have more luck selling your basses on here or where ever then buying a Ray outright.
-
Most Rays usually sell for more on eBay than on here IMO, the odd one goes cheap but generally the ones started for 99p tend to go for more than ones listed over and over! I guess people like to bid?
-
Why dont you just sell yours on evilbay and be done with it?

Is it OK to like learning this one? I know its in the Moondance category which is also in our set but I think its a better song? So far our set is a right mixture and although I am sure the usual BC members would slate it in general discussion we already know how well it goes down at the gig so the punters win IMO We have a random list of songs and so far the upright ones are; The Police- Roxanne and Every Little Thing She Does, The Cure-Love Cats Moondance! Peggy Lee- Fever (work in progress for practice this week) I also do these on either elec or upright Paloma Faith- Upside Down Amy Winehouse- Valerie House Martins- Happy Hour Dolly Parton- 9-5 9 songs on the upright in the set is probably more than enough anyway but I could swap things around if I had a few more, any suggestions of known songs that either are upright style songs or can work on either? Amazingly the rest of the set takes us from Kelly Clarkson's Since you been gone right through to Blondie, Bruno Mars, Fleetwood Mac and the usual Kings of Leon and the Killers etc! Thanks

Better is subjective though so I would say no we cant all agree on that. Steve Harris does nothing for me and nor does the other lets all veto ERBs because X never played one 'Billy Sheehan'. It is not because of the 4 strings they prefer I just dont really like their music. I was learning this earlier and it made me think of this thread.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHzOOQfhPFg Tony Kinal is ace IMO, nice subtle use of the extra notes as ever and SR5 to boot

Where did the sex or gigging thread go?
Ha ha ha, a happy choice of phrase. It doesn't count unless a second person is involved!
Very good sir -
Do you use the room's rig or take your own?
stingrayPete1977 replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
In what way unknown? Ohm value our just if it generally works ok? If it works with the house amp and is the correct ohmage I'd use it. -
I like a nice Tobias, never heard a bad one live

HOW GOOD ARE STINGRAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
stingrayPete1977 replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
Only the real ones appear to get that honey coloured neck over time, all the cheaper version I have seen have had either a pasty white neck or a painted neck, the weight can sometimes make a bass feel more proper, that is true of many things in life like watches etc. The control knobs/pots felt cheap on all the cheaper versions I have tried and the main difference is the body edges, on most budget instruments they are sharp edged from the cnc which is good compared to tat of yester year but all hand finished basses (try a true custom like a GB or Overwater etc) have that rolled edge that machines cant do easily if at all. IMO Like it or not we do get an extra bit of enjoyment from owning the real thing so if it's enjoyment you want I'd say go for the real deal On the other hand the pre EBs are better anyway -

Looks ace Wayne! -
Past performance is no guarantee of future results...
Ha I was thinking similar but we like what we like, sometimes change what we like and then change back again. Freebird can be played on any timmo and just to fully contradict myself none of my uprights are 5 string even though Gedo were selling the 5 string version of mine for £250 less than the four! Lol
If the gear was so bad that I'd need to take my own then I wouldn't be using that rehearsal studio. Anyway, it's just a rehearsal, get over it.
I agree and I like tnts anyway -
Just never say never, I was more anti five strings than ET above, now I have two, never gig the others!
-
But no one person has to do it all on one bass. You can use what you like, or at least what the producer likes.
Then there is the bass synth
-
I'm surprised about the number of people suggesting it's OK to stop mid-song. During rehearsals, yes, but during a gig I used to think it was a no-brainer to carry on and recover as best you can. Seems I was wrong.
Ooh never mid song! False start with a light hearted blame the drummer for starting in the wrong key joke at 1 in 10 gigs is live music, stopping mid song is a car crash!
-
I play 4's, quite fancy trying a 5 - will it make me a better player?
It has me 100% certain about it but its not for all, I won't be going back and since I broke my wrist and am struggling even with five a six looks more interesting than ever, we could put sir duke back in the set!
-
Very likely but the great majority was still done on four strings.
And all could of been done on a five but not on a four except the stuff done on a six stuff
-
... and the great majority of recorded music over the last 60 years has used a four string bass.
Quite a bit has been recorded on fives even if the live shows were not too
-
Ahh ok.Thanks for the replies. Not something a beginner should worry themselves about then.I haven`t really noticed them until a few months ago.But when you take up a new hobby, you tend to notice things more.Like i always listen to the bassline closer than i used to when listening to music
Lots of people start on a five these days, probably easier if its something you want to do anyway.

Good post BRX but you forget to say if they are better or not

I like the look of them a lot!
