Yep, anyone who says they are a one trick pony needs to practice their own techniques more I'm no virtuoso but some people rely on the tone controls and amp setting to try and get their sound, the only thing I do from my basic sound for the night is cut a bit of treble when I'm using a pick and maybe add a touch if using the old thumb! Have you seen Ed friedlands ray clips? -
But lacking flip-up battery compartments and having no hum-cancelling phantom coil for single-coil mode..
I keep a multitool in my gear bag and always keep at least one 9v battery spare so its not a massive issue, never had a battery go completely mid song either. The true single coil is a thing of legend and to be honest I don't like my phantom coils as there is a tiny delay added imo, the only time I go to single coil is if I can't cut through at all. Played a 2+ hour set last night covering every genre going and I think any bass player in the audience would of agreed that even though it might not be the exact sound they would want for their own originals it did exactly what it says on the tin, good solid sound for funk, disco, indie, pop, r&b, rock and anything else I have forgotten. Proper gigging bass -
I use a clip-on mini tuner on the bridge, which works fine. Plugged in I use a TC Electronic Polytune, which is impressively instantaneous!
And me clip on isn't the most accurate though but good enough for my ears!

Teal is one of the colours that looks equally as good with either a rosewood or maple board, I think it makes the SR5 look more like a Stingray too for some reason -
GAS-free since I got my 1996 SR5. Transparant teal green, birdseye maple neck. It's love I tell ya.
Teal is the best colour and with maple too, my main bass was teal SR4 for ten years until I traded it on here for my black SR5. -
I have been having a cheeky read too I am getting OK with the bow now actually but my duff wrist is causing me grief again
Did they do fivers then?
Yes '87 onwards, thats where the 6 bolt neck, truss rod adjusting wheel and 3 band EQ came from. Early ones are Alnico pickup equipped too for full Ray goodness -

I'd hunt for a nice late 80s or early 90s one, six bolt neck but two eq, nice figured neck etc -
There's very good reasons for both approaches to exist. When I'm mixing multi-band gigs where I don't know the bassist and the backline, I'll default to using a DI box and take the signal before the amp unless the player requests otherwise. For me as an engineer, that means I know that even if the amp is crap, unreliable, gets its settings fiddled with by less educated people sharing rigs or whatever, I've got a consistent and reliable signal coming to FOH anyway. If (for example) somebody like BRX rolled up who obviously knew his rig and his tones and had a setup that lent itself to me taking a post processing signal I'd be more than obliging - it only takes seconds to pull an XLR out of a DI box and throw it into somebody's rack/pedalboard/whatever. I think you'll find that most FOH guys would love to work with a band to create the perfect FOH mix but the realities of gigging rarely allow for that luxury. The quality of their work is their calling card just as your performance is for you and they'll be looking for the best mix they can achieve given the time and resources available to them. Sometimes that means compromises have to be made somewhere, but with a bit of communication everybody can have their input and end up (reasonably) happy!
I agree with all of this If I had my own bass tech and sound crew I would love to spend hours crafting a great sound but in reality I'm happy with a generic 'Good sound' which as we know is subjective anyway. I hear JTUK and BRX loud and clear I really do but we only have to see footage of big names like Muse and the Chili peppers to know that FX live at a different venue every night cant have mixed outcomes even with a dedicated pro team at the helm,I love Flea but feck me does he have some sh*te sounds live

What did the original Pre-EB hard cases look like?
stingrayPete1977 replied to 4 Strings's topic in Bass Guitars
Well I have never seen one of those plastic ones with the round corners, if they are for the early ebmm models I'd say they would be of interest to someone, where is drTStingray? Or try the ebmm forum? -

Yes the mumnosh one and marcus, they are the typical none pear shaped pre eb cases, lots of colours for the inside available. -
Thanks, so is the chuck3r case, with those rounded corners, a pre-EB case? I'm also looking at the 'Mumnosh' 1979 Stingray just before halfway down in a leatherette covered wooden case. Is that one? There's a pear shaped one further down
I'd say its an early ebmm one, 84-86ish? Any bass with a fret marker on the 21st fret is ebmm even though it only has mm markings like the cases. -

I get confused with the tone pot on a p bass going what sounds like the opposite way to my ears! -
My 2010 is 10lb, My 2007 might be responsible for the bad weather recently due to its weight pulling on the worlds oceans, I love it!

Here you go, scroll down, have you got an early EBMM case? (nice if you have even nicer if you have two!) look at the white bass (chuck3r 1990) not a pre EB as it has the extra fret marker and a chamfeur. http://www.musicmanbass.org/mycustompage0006.htm Scroll down further for an example of the rectangular pre EB case but they do vary a lot, I dropped on mine from Nicks guitars as mine had a modern Fender case and Nick swapped it for a more Period case at my request, after he did he remembered that it originally have a pre EB Ray in it that someone bought off him who did not want the case as they were going on the train home! -

They are not plastic mate, wooden with a coating like a Fender one but without the logo, white piping normally. After that its a trickier debate, orange, blue and black appear to be possible original interior fluff colours. Bit of an angled lift up compartment in one corner. -

I am just listening to some Jamiroquai, Have you tried any Zender licks on it yet? The classic Zender Warwick tone was acheived quite often on a pink SR5, early one so Alnico pickup like a proper Ray
