I started on a basic gear4music bass that I ordered online. I've just upgraded to a late 1800's German flatback. As soon as I got the gear4music bass I started getting loads more gigs and it wasn't long before I had earned back the money I'd paid for it (plus the £100 setup). I definitely think it would be worth considering something cheap that can get you used to playing an upright before shelling out on something better. I managed to sell my gear4music on to a friend and didn't really lose much money on it so happy days.
This is where I am at mate, The Gedo one I am after would surely sell on for a decent price? Half carved, ebony board, proper tuners, adjustable bridge and fitted with Spirocores. If I looked after it surely I would get back £650-750 for it?

Hey Owen those Yita music bows that I got recommended on here are really nice and mine came pretty quick too, I think wood of any type might be left in favour of carbon if its less than a few hundred quid

OK I love this bass as I pretty much built it! but it has no B string and I am saving up for a double bass Affinity Squier Jazz bass but with- Bartolini pickups EBS preamp hidden behind control plate. Badass II bridge. Jack socket drilled into body to allow original plate to be used for Volume, Treble, Bass, PU Blend controls. Genuine 3 ply B/W/B Fender pickguard. Fret edges dressed in neatly, no sharp edges here. Small Affinity range tuners replaced with full size open tuners, hold in tune perfectly. Pikey eBay Fender logo that is actually green up close Really light weight bass for anyone with a bad back but with a massive sound and playability to equal basses of much more value, I have never played a genuine Fender Jazz that has come even close to this bass! Cost to build another would be well over £500, I am looking for £250 ( the bridge, pickups and preamp are worth most of that IMO) some soft dents etc, this was gigged most weekends for about 4 years. Collection from Stafford area preffered Last price drop, I'd rather keep it or sell it in parts than for less than £250.

Hi everyone, I picked this up last year from a BC member but via eBay, it has also belonged to at least one other member on here, I stripped it down and cleaned it all up, resoldered the dodgy earth and fitted it with EB 40-100 strings before setting it up just how I like with no issues at all, the truss rod and microtilt neck adjustments are working as Leo intended. I only wanted it as a collectors item really as I am mainly a five string player these days but it was so good I started gigging it straight away where a 5 string was not needed and took it to any jam nights etc that I could until disaster struck, I broke my wrist! After that I switched to electric upright bass as it meant less twisting of the wrist to be able to play, of course as time has passed it has given me gas for a proper upright bass and as this is my least used bass it is with sadness that I am putting it on here to fund one. OK 1979 is the year I have dated this bass at as it has a 1978 date on the neck and a 3 bolt neck and the correct sting thru bridge for that era but the preamp pots are dated 1979 hence the newest thing on it, it has plenty of mojo and an awesome worn patch around the main playing area on the rear of the neck, it makes it feel much more special and old feeling than a mint Stingray bass (which I also own that is not for sale!), the body has knocks and dings inline with the age and wear on the neck but I would hate to see it refinished really, there are a few layers of paint but after much deliberation I think it is a factory refin probably due to a flaw or knock when being built, it is hard to say and I am the first owner to even suggest that may be the case so I am being picky yet honest. The fingerboard has been relaquered at some point probably after a refret who knows but its all done well and the frets are all dressed nicely and this has been done many years ago and aged nicely, It realy does feel the business to play and look at, nothing like a new ClassicRay from EBMM and not going to go down in value like one either It has the muted string thru bridge. Three bolt micro tilt neck. Tantulum capacitor preamp rather than the later electrolytic ones. Original preamp. Original control plate and knobs. Original string tree. Original 3 bolt plate. Original pickup. Original pickguard. Original tuners. Working bullet truss rod. (sometimes an issue on early Rays) Earlier Logo higher up the headstock rather than near the edge, correct for a '78 neck. Sounds epic. £1375 ovno or possible trade for an upright bass with a bit of money either way possible, As you can tell this is a reluctant for sale thread and if nothing comes of it I wont be too upset If I find the money for an upright from somewhere else this will be pulled I dont really want to post this and I would rather someone try it first and see it in the flesh as its a 34 year old bass not a new ernie ball bass! meet half way is possible within reason and I am based in Stafford (not button moon). Of course my feedback and remember after all I am stingrayPete! Just swapped to my galaxy tab rather than my phone and I can see now, if you read my thread about looking at basses you will see my dilema, I really don't know what to go for and what to sell on to fund one, if the possible sale of my pre eb goes ahead soon I will be able to spend a bit more, if it doesn't I might sell my jazz instead. I will have to see what happens in the next few days -
Man there are some nice basses on the g and l site!

Well its not about the EUB really , I have hooks in my little practice room which have a jazz, 2 Ray 5s and, 2 Ray4s on at the moment, I have an acoustic bass in the bedroom up the corner where I am hoping to fit the DB, to do that I want to sell the black pre EB Ray to free up a hook to hang the acoustic bass from, I might sell my Jazz bass too at some point and have a guitar hanging up that currently lives in the cupboard, thats it then no more changes ever,, well maybe....

I wont mate, pie first, basses later see you in a bit then.

OH dear I have emailed Gedo and they can do me a nice deal on the half carved in antique brown with an adjustable bridge fitted and fitted with Spirocore weichs, I am sure that would make a great first upright wouldn't it? I am not going to be the next virtuoso and at this stage I am still unsure of the amount of movement I am going to recover after breaking my wrist (the thing that got me started on uprights really). Looks like the black pre EB is going unless I can raise the funds from else where, but that is not what the wife has agreed to anyway
